Mages Make Quick Money (2)

She asked in surprise: “Really? How do you know that you are a genius?”

“I just know.” Anna finished speaking and pulled Natalie’s hand. “Let’s go to the library. Teacher Leon gave me a list of books. I can’t wait.”

“A list of books?” Natalie scurried after Anna.

Anna’s expression was mysterious; she lowered her voice and said, “After reading the books on the list, you’ll be guaranteed to pass and become a one-star mage.”

“Wow…” Natalie exclaimed, and quickly covered her mouth. She suppressed her excitement, “It turns out that this legendary book list really exists! How did you get it from Mage Leon?”

Anna was confused: “Is it difficult to obtain this book list? I asked Mage Leon to help me create a book list, and he just ‘shuashuashua’* and wrote it out for me.”

[T/N: Onomatopoeia for writing; the sound of pencil against paper]

“It was that simple?”

“Yeah? It’s not like I have any gold coins to buy it from him.”

“It turned out to be that simple…”

On the way to the library, Natalie was lost in her confusion.

Mage Leon’s list of books guaranteed to produce a one-star mage; there was a legend that had been circulating. He had been a teacher of introductory courses for many mage disciples. The “must read book list to pass the one-star mage assessment” came from those people. But they only shared bits and pieces, and it seemed like there were not many people who got their hands on this list; till this day, she still didn’t know the specific books on the list.

When they got to the library, Anna took out the list and began to search for the books. Natalie suddenly came back to her senses, she seemed to understand something.

She used to find ways to inquire from others about the list, but she didn’t get anything. Anna just asked directly and got the list of books.

Sometimes, some things are that simple!

Seeing Anna standing on tiptoe to reach for a book on the top of the shelf, Natalie rushed over to support Anna’s waist; she was shorter than Anna, so of course she couldn’t help get the book down.

Judging from the book titles listed, these books could be read in the order written on the list. Although it was not possible to bring these books outside the library, there was no limit to the number of books you could take from the shelf, as long as you marked whenever you took out a book.

Afraid of mixing them up, Anna took the first five books on the list for now, and then found a corner to quickly skim through them. In order to formulate a special training plan for Natalie and herself, she must know what she had to learn next.

Anna read the preface and table of contents of each book, and took notes on paper provided by the library while reading. After that, she skimmed the entire book at a very fast speed, getting a rough idea of the content.

According to this method, it took ten minutes to read a book; Natalie, who was both reading and taking peeks at Anna, was stunned.

When Anna picked up the second book, she said in a very low voice: “Anna, have you remembered all the information?” If Anna could remember what she read after flipping through like this, no wonder she called herself a genius!

Anna naturally said: “Of course I don’t remember, how could I have such a good memory?”

“Then you…”

Anna simply explained her plan: “I’m taking a look at how much we are going to learn first, and what we’re learning, so that we can make a plan and allocate a ratio of theoretical and practical training time.”

Every time when it came around to the  promotion assessment, Natalie would embrace the Buddha’s feet at the last moment* and take out books that were falling apart from frequent use. She had no systematic plan. She herself was lost, but because she took a lot of exams, she almost always passed.

[T/N: to cram]

So when she heard Anna’s plan, she nodded her head like she understood: “It sounds amazing…”

Anna smiled. This was the ability she had cultivated through years of compulsory education and higher education. This Mage Association seems to provide a school-like environment, but in fact it was still a mentorship system, and for Natalie to not learn this ability of hers was normal.

Anna continued her “random skimming of books”. An hour later, all five books were flipped through. She put these books back, took out five more books, and continued the process.

Three hours later, Anna stretched her back. She went through all 14 books on the list, and had a preliminary plan for how to train in the following two months.

She glanced at Natalie, who due to boredom from waiting, was already sleeping drowsily. A few strands of blond hair on her petite head fell little by little, dangling around her nose. She seemed to feel a little itchy and couldn’t help but scratch her nose. But in a daze, she forgot that her arm was still supporting her head; she slumped down instantly and knocked her chin on the table.

Before her chin made contact with the table, Anna reached out and stuck her hand between her chin and the table.

Natalie was shocked awake, and she looked up at Anna blankly. Because her chin was still in Anna’s palm, Anna couldn’t help but think of the funny and cute videos, and laughed. Then she gently lifted Natalie up.

“Have you slept enough?” Anna whispered. She handed a book to Natalie. “Read the first chapter before dinner. I will check it afterwards.”

Upon hearing the “spot check”, Natalie became alert. She quickly accepted the book, only to see that the title of the book was “Intrinsic Attributes of Natural Elements”. She thought to herself that she had remembered all the intrinsic attributes of the natural elements, but after seeing Anna pick up the book “Potions 101” and start to read it, she had no choice but to shake off her doubts and also begin to read albeit with a nervous heart.
