Chapter 38

[“So, I just need to put this on and then let my mana do all the work, right?”] I ask, fiddling with my wrist.

[“Yes. Simply say ‘Interface on’ and it will activate,”] Tasianna instructed.

With a nod, I then proceeded to put this bracelet onto my left wrist like a watch, pouring mana into it after it was strapped on properly. This accessory was a simple, gray-colored metal bracelet with a beautiful, marine blue colored stone, or gemstone, lodged into the middle. A strap was also attached so the wearer may adjust it to their wrist’s size.

Once my mana ceased leaving my body, meaning the bracelet was fully recharged, I spoke the command “Interface on” to activate the gadget.

A blue screen projected out of the bluestone. It looked very similar to a video game’s pause menu, showing multiple little icons interactable by touch. Pressing my finger on the screen, it felt like touching a liquid, but somehow it felt very familiar as if this screen was an extension of my body.

This was a manatech, a mana-fueled technology stable in Peolynca similar to how electric-based devices were for Earth. What made it a manatech was the little mana battery inside it, acting as its core to absorb and store mana for the tool's usage.

Compared to the mana battery inside that [Warhammer Mana Cannon] that we encountered during our troll battle, this one was a dwarven-made, meaning it could only absorb mana with somebody’s consent. Like an electric battery, you could only make the manatech work if it was sufficiently charged, otherwise, the device would be useless.

According to Tasianna, this bracelet was a so-called party bracelet, enabling people to create a party with other people who owned a party bracelet. In the past, the first version of it was created by the dwarves to allow their kings and hold lords to keep tabs on their retainers, and vice-versa.

Fortunately, due to the popularity of the experience sharing function added down the road, it had been commercialized and sold world-wide. Nowadays, it was rare to not see an aspiring adventurer or veteran not have one of these bracelets. Even nobles and various other people in good standing had them, as most modern models had other useful functions.

[“This is a screen made from your mana,”] Tasianna informed me, explaining the familiar feeling once I touched the blue screen. [“Please have a look at these three.”]

Tasianna flew up to me and pointed at three separate icons on the HUD, each displaying different functions the gadget had.

The first icon, in the appearance of a handshake, was the “Party” button. Touching it, another screen appeared, similar to a window pop-up on a PC, and gave me two options to choose. On the left side was the button for “Form Party” and the one on the right was “Join Party.”

Instructed by Tasianna, I pressed the left button.

The whole menu screen changed once I pressed the button. In the upper part of the screen, there was a UI very similar to an MMO's party system, displaying a couple of my status board information. I was currently in my humanized form, so my stats were suffering from [Humanized (Moderate)].

It has been a while since I last checked my status board in my humanized form but for some reason I was level 74. When I first used [Humanize], I only just evolved into a D rank dragon, so my level was zero, but my humanized form showed me as level 25. Thinking back, it took me 25 levels to evolve into a C rank and I was currently level 24 in my dragon form.

Did this mean my human level was scaling with my dragon one?

Huh?

Turning my head around, I saw Saori fiddling with her own bracelet. It had the same simplistic design as mine but hers, on the other hand, did have a few small, red stains, residue from the troll blood we couldn’t clean off.

You see, these bracelets once belonged to the trolls we killed outside the cave, who wore them like rings. This fact should be telling of how massive those trolls were, when two “rings” perfectly fitted Saori’s and my wrists… Admittedly mine was a bit loose.

Looking to my side, Tasianna was also awaiting my confirmation by staring at her own blue screen. Compared to our party bracelets, hers was beautifully designed with a keychain attached to the strap of the bracelet.

It was a pristine white bracelet, adorned with small flower engravings. Instead of our marine blue colored stone, hers was a bright green that sat in the middle of an extravagant emblem. The symbol, a triangle made from three sets of curling lines intersecting each other to represent the wind, had two pairs of iridescent butterfly wings on its sides.

It was hard to recognize every single detail, due to how small Tasianna’s bracelet was, but I guessed my improved eyesight due to [Enhanced Vision] was helping out. However, it was clear to see how our bracelets were extremely old models, so old Tasianna couldn’t even recognize them. They were missing plenty of functions hers had.

When I asked her what the emblem was, Tasianna said it was the religious symbol dedicated to the Goddess of Winds, Zephira. This bracelet was distributed to all servants of the royal family of the fairies, which made sense why the patron Goddess of the fairies would be so much of an important part of their lives to have it on their bracelets. It was like a phone’s casing, in my opinion.

Regardless, the difference in quality between our and her party bracelets was significant. It  made me envious but I quickly buried this displeasure. It couldn’t be helped that we were using outdated versions. We looted the things from random trolls, after all. It was disappointing, they worked despite the abuse during the fight, so beggars couldn’t be choosers.

Shaking off those thoughts, I pressed “Accept” for both prompts, accepting both my companions into my party.

“Uhh…” Tasianna unconsciously let out her voice. [“T-These are Princess Hestia’s and Madam Saori’s stats? Incredible…”]

Were they, really? I silently thought as I glanced over at a new icon that appeared at the top of the menu.

They were unknown letters to me, but Tasianna told me it was the abbreviation for “EXP.” The button had the function to allow experience sharing. As the party leader, I could decide how much experience would be shared among everybody. I quickly activated the function and decided on a fair three-way split among us.

Saori, noticing I activated it, laughed enthusiastically, [“This is perfect, right, Hestia? Our usual power leveling method will be even more effective!”]

Her gleeful smile was clearly showing her addiction to leveling. I massaged my temple and told her not to overdo it, again, unless she wanted [Battle Frenzy] to reappear.

She quickly apologized, saying, [“Yeah, don’t worry. The bracelets allow us to share experiences now, right? Which means, we two C ranks can now go on a rampage together!”]

“…!” I looked at Saori, astonished, before sharing her smirk. [“Tehehie! You’re right! That is sooo true! The world will now face the power leveling schemes of two C rank Earthlings, now!”]

Together, the both of us giggled like some gossiping highschoolers, imagining what we could do to improve our monster baiting with the concert. This all happened while Tasianna looked at us in confusion, wondering what was going on. Noticing her, we cleared our voices and allowed Tasianna to resume her explanation on the last two icons.

The second icon was a map, which I presumed was the party member locator function of this tool. Unfortunately, I expected it to be a complete map, but those wishes shattered the moment I opened it.

This function simply told the distance between each party member and if they were close enough to be eligible for the experience share. If one member was outside the effective area, any experience they gained wouldn’t be shared with rest of the party and vice-versa.

[“Interesting,”] I said. [“Doesn’t this and the party function make one of [Hestia’s Retainer]’s effect useless? Specifically, the one where you can ask for my condition?”]

What I mean was how Tasianna and Saori could use [Hestia’s Retainer] to ask the System about my current status. They could ask trivial questions like “Did Hestia eat something wrong?” or even more serious ones like “Is Hestia in mortal danger?”

[“These functions will only work when you are wearing yours, Princess Hestia,”] Tasianna answered. [“If you were to put it in your [Storage Magic] then we would not be able to find you anymore. Especially in your dragon form, it would be impossible to use the bracelet, yes?”]

I nodded. I had to be careful whenever I wanted to transform back into the dragon, less I break our only party bracelets.

These devices use mana signals to detect and register the bracelets of others when you wished to form a party. Once the party was formed, the devices only remembered the mana signal of the bracelets itself, not the user.

Apparently, those who didn’t have enough mana to spend on refueling their bracelet's mana battery carried portable ones to act as external batteries. So in most cases, the mana of the user wouldn't coincide with the one fueling the party bracelet.

The third, and last, icon looked like a card, specifically an ID card.

[“If I had my ID, I could have shown you its function. My apologies, everyone.”] Tasianna bowed in an aplogy, then proceeded to point at the keychain of her bracelet. [“You would attach your ID card on the keychain, therefore, enabling the function. Yours seems to have broken off, unfortunately.”]

Apparently, an ID was, quite literally, an identification card, similar to the ones we had on Earth. These ones were manatech, however, which served as a way to display our Profile and other affiliations without needing to use the intrusive [Identify] on others. They were staples in this world, and you required them for bureaucratic work and to live in a town or city.

If this party bracelet wasn’t already enough of a surprise, then hold on tight. Tasianna mentioned the ID cards were also used to gain “Quests” from adventurer and commercial guilds. Quests, as in, the RPG special.

[“Aside from slaying beasts and humanoids, anybody can gain experience by accepting and fulfilling quests from various guilds, like the artisan or merchant guild,”] Tasianna further elaborated on this very familiar video game mechanic. [“I didn’t rise up to this level through slaying monsters, but from the daily awarded experience I would gain as an attendant of the royal family.”]

I was astonished.

Until today, I thought you needed to kill monsters to gain experience, but not only have I learned there was a way to share experience with others, there were methods to gain it non-lethally. Considering that the System was accommodating this, it had to mean the gods were doing a wonderful job of adapting their System to this developing world. For a bunch of old divine beings, they sure were accommodating every aspect of the world.

[“[Identify] is usually a hard skill to acquire, so our world has ways to overcome this. There are identify rings for the rich, but the main way for most people would be by using this ID card. If you want to register as an adventurer or enter a city without a toll, Lady Hestia, you will require these.”] Tasianna gave me some examples on the importance of these cards.

[“I see,”] I mumbled, curious about something. [“So, why don’t you have your ID anymore? Did they take it away before you went into self-exile?”]

Tasianna’s left eye twitched for a second, before casting them down. [“My belongings were taken by the troll and must be buried in that cave now. I’m not too sad about losing my ID, but the necklace given to me by Princess Schuri was with it…”]

Ouch, did I just open a wound?!

[“Oh my…”] Saori frowned worriedly. She then gave me a newly sewn one-piece and underwear, trying to change the topic. [“They should fit you now but do give me your impression on their designs, later on. They are the prototype for your future clothes, after all.”]

Saori then went to console Tasianna.

I left them alone and concentrated on switching to my new clothes. Since [Humanize] seemed to be a tier three skill, there were breakpoints at level three, seven, and nine. Upgrading the skill with my SP, my humanized form’s age has reached twelve, which meant that my height had also increased. This meant I outgrew the clothes I was just wearing this morning.

Constructing a small earthen room to change in, I dispelled my flame dress, preparing to put on the stuff Saori gave me. My first impression was how they were specifically made to accommodate my tail and wings, especially the underwear.

First, was the halter bra without a back strap. As I would usually have wings, all the strings had to be tied around my neck but that wasn’t the case when I was using [Humanize Lv. 8], which actually made me wingless!

Second, the bottom part was a skin-tight boxer brief with a large hole to fit my tail through it. Since my fighting style was pretty acrobatic, showing off too much skin when I upskirt myself felt too embarrassing, so this was the best compromise.

The underwear were form-fitting and felt comfortable to the touch, reminding me of the same sensation I had when I touched the party bracelet’s blue screen. This had to be how mana felt if it was made tangible.

Last, but not least, was my dress. A mana blue one-piece which stretched down to my knees, had an open back leaving enough room for my wings to freely flap. Twirling around like a ballerina, it felt nice to see the hem flutter around.

Now fully covered, I technically never have to take them off again. They were made from mana, so cleaning them was unnecessary, and they could repair themselves using my mana whenever I wanted.

Saori and I previously tested this function out. It would turn into a choker when we monsterized but would reform back into a dress once we humanized.

The only complaint I had was how you couldn’t change the appearance of the clothes with your mana, freely. You would need to modify the mana fabric itself to change anything on the clothes. Saori, being the seamstress, probably knew how to do it. However, from my impression, she was more likely to sew more clothes and store our old ones in our storage, than to modify a current one if it fits and was nice to wear.

As a final check, I let my wings out to see how comfortable it was. Being able to freely change from [Humanize Lv. 7] and [Humanize Lv. 8] finally gave me the option to walk around without my wings, while retaining my new height and “Age.”

Oh gosh, I loved my beautiful wings but they were too cumbersome to live with. At least now I had clothes to accommodate them, but they still were still too large for tight spaces. Wing span-wise, they were far taller than me, after all. In any case, I retracted them back after transforming back into my eight form, seeing as I didn’t need them for now.

Now wingless, I exited the changing room and informed Saori of my impression, who responded with, “That is good to hear.”

I also apologized to Tasianna about being inconsiderate, which she accepted without any problems. She replied, “You couldn’t have possibly known, so I cannot fault you for it.”

[“Ok, I’m done changing and we’re all in the same party, right?”] I announced to my two official party members. [“So, where do we go from here?”]

I asked that question to both of them. We were still in the canyon and our paths forward were restricted. We could either stay in the canyon and explore it, or we could scale up the cliffs. Depending on our choice, we could either scale the one to re-enter the Belzac forest or we could go up the other one to leave it.

[“Hmm, I would like to suggest not to leave the Belzac forest”] Tasianna answered, which prompted me to ask her to go into more detail. [“If we were to leave the forest via the cliff, we would be going east. The east canyon would bring us to human civilization.”]

My eyes opened wide. Initially, I felt elated as my goal was right over the corner. Civilization, which meant my time to debut, however, the moment that realization came, I silently gulped. My mouth began to twitch and felt weak in my knees for some reason.

The thought of fulfilling my dream was about to come true! Only, that meant I would be put before the public’s scrutiny again. I felt unsure if I had trained enough for it. I felt like I wasn’t ready yet for this next step.

While I was deliberating, Tasianna continued, [“Going north, over the Belzac mountains, we would reach elven territory. The elves are a long-living race who are allied with the Dragon Empire, Princess Hestia! I assure you, the moment they learn of your identity, they will help you in any way you wish!”]

This time, Saori responded, skeptically, [“Are you sure about that?”]

["Yes, I learned from my time in the royal castle that the Elven Kingdom, Saelariel, are officially allied with the Dragon Empire, Kargryx, and the Dragonewt Republic, Loatryx. Compared to the humans, the elves are a refined and cultured race, while also having a relationship with the dragonkins,”] Tasianna argued. [“Princess Hestia, you are royalty — an imperial dragon princess. Your treatment will be superb!”]

[“W-Wait, Tasianna,”] I injected myself, stopping her from being too excited. [“I have no plans to make myself known as a princess if it isn’t necessary.”]

[“Miss Tasianna,we have not talked to you about our goals yet. You see, Hestia wishes to become an idol. They are dancing singers who are quite popular on Earth,”] Saori supported me, stating our dreams we two had settled on before we met Tasianna. [“I personally wish to travel around this new world and learn about its history and culture. I want to experience everything there is to be experienced.”]

[“Those are wonderful dreams. The elven country is rich in history and culture, and I bet the elves would also love…”]

[“They most likely will, but we are not limiting ourselves to the elves,”] Saori interrupted Tasianna and further argued our point. [“Despite what we heard about humans from you, we were formerly humans, and I do wish to see how different they are compared to Earth’s. Right, Hestia?”]

["Y-Yeah!"] Tasianna looked a bit dejected when her decision was completely shot down by us. ["I do have a question, though. How long is the travel time to reach the elven country, and how long will it take until we reach the human's?"]

Tasianna placed a hand on her chin, thinking deeply before responding, [“It will take about three months if we were to walk through the forest. Although, when I was with the trolls, they were also transporting the cannon and the mass amount of supplies, which prolonged our travel by a month.”]

Three months? That’s possibly three more months I could use to train up to make my debut perfect! …Wait, did she just say that she was imprisoned for a whole month?! What the heck!

I wanted to say something, but it seemed Tasianna glossed over it, continuing where she left off, ["I never entered a human country before, so I can't tell exactly how long it will take. All I know from the maps in the fairy village's library is that we are currently on the border of a human kingdom. A week or two is all we need, maybe? That all depends if a settlement is close by."]

This time, anxiousness swelled into my chest, stopping the excitement I felt from hearing the three month delay to train. It was not that I didn’t want to meet the humans — I actually really did want to see for myself if Tasianna’s description of them was as malicious as she thought they were or if it was just her prejudice speaking. There was no way all humans were scum, after all. Even on Earth, you had good people among the nutjobs and pure evil ones. There was always an exception to the rule.

If I took one cliff, I would only have a short indeterminate amount of time before reaching civilization, while the other option would give me about two months at the minimum. Staying in the canyon was completely a no go, as nobody wanted to stay here. I had to choose.

I mean, did I really have to worry this much about debuting? I could reach a human settlement and just chill for a few weeks or months, practicing until I was good enough… but, could I even do that even with more time to practice?

I had lived until this point using that single mantra as my motivation — “I will become an Idol.” Becoming stronger, surviving, and enduring all the things this forest threw at me was to achieve this goal. I was continuing my past life’s ambition so I could prove to myself and everybody else I could have done it even on Earth. I wanted to make my parents proud, and not see them worry so much.

[“Hestia?”]

I wanted to, no, I had to make this debut perfect. It had to be perfect ‘cause an idol needed to leave a good impression to continue being successful. I didn’t want to even hear anybody boo at me. I didn’t want to face failure. I wanted everybody to have fun, not frown and leave in the middle of a song.

Unfortunately, my dancing needed practice. I hadn’t decided on a choreography, yet. All I had been doing was singing! Didn’t I need to prepare more? Shouldn’t I work even harder than before?

[“Princess Hestia?”]

… Am-Am I worrying too much here? Overthinking?

“Hestia!”

“Bwuah!” I gave out a shriek, darting my eyes up and down until they locked onto Saori. She was holding my shoulders, having shaken them slightly to wake me up.

[“Is something the matter? Why did you not respond to us earlier?”] Saori sounded suspicious and worried, looking at me as she was trying to analyze my thoughts.

[“S-Sorry, I was just worrying about something.”] To avoid exposing my childish worry, I used [Thought Acceleration] to think of a believable excuse in the time it took her to ask me. [“I was actually thinking of going to the elven country. I was worried that you would not like it.”]

[“That is your reason?”] She was startled at what I said but her suspicions were now gone. [“Oh, Hestia. You have such a bad habit of worrying too much. I am perfectly content with whichever direction we go, as both will be a new experience. It should be obvious, hehe.”]

Laughing her worry off, she released me from her grip and shook her head in exasperation, stating I had to stop worrying so much. She wanted me to express myself more, since we were companions. “Be more confident,” she said, but that only stung my heart as I knew I lied to her.

Sorry for lying to you, Saori, but I really don’t want you to worry. It’s two months at the very least, which gives me enough time to solve my problems. I’ll be able to do this, I know!

Maybe it would've been better to tell her about my dilemma, but wasn't this a problem I had to solve myself? Maybe it would be better if I relied on her a bit more, but I wasn’t sure what she would think of me at that point.

Without a doubt, Saori was right to call me a worrywart. But, I just couldn’t even eke out my worries to her right now. I felt so ashamed after I boasted how I would become an amazing idol to her, but was now too afraid to start it. However, it would all go away once I trained more.

Sure, it wasn’t like all my problems could disappear in two months, however, practice made perfect. I just needed to train. Practice my dancing as if there was no tomorrow!

[“Thank you very much for agreeing to go to the elven country, everyone. I actually just remembered that it will be winter soon. We might need more than two months, now.”]

I get more time?! Oh, hell, yeah!

Snapping my fingers in joy, all my worries disappeared in an instant. My motivation started to grow after I heard I had more time to practice. With more time, I would be able to build up the courage and skill to give off a perfect first performance.

With our path decided, there was only one more question left we needed to answer.

How do we get back up?
