Chapter 44

We visited a walstein specialty shop called stein in Mira. Even though it was early morning the restaurant was packed, everyone was talking about something that happened in Greyberg.

Apparently the final spell that created a massive black sphere, erasing the castle, had been visible from Mira. I guess doing that was actually quite brazen of me.

The large round table was piled with various steaks, salads and even alcohol, one would be hard pressed to call this breakfast. But, Sieg and the others all dug in as soon as the food arrived.

“I’ve been thinking, wouldn’t you all have actually taking care of the attack on your own?”

“The final result would have been the same sure, but Aries was quite formidable. There is little chance of it having gone the same way.”

The robes the three of them wore had an inhibitory effect so that even though they were saying Aries’ name, no one noticed. Of course, my robe also had the same effect.

Since I borrowed the robe from Toa I made sure to clean the blood off of it with my 《cleaning》 skill.

“Aries specialized in assassination right?”

“Well, it’s not a normal assassination, she was skilled enough to be considered S rank.”

That doesn’t surprise me.

“There was actually a different reason behind asking you for help. I was worried that one of the summoned heros might have shown up. If that was the case, we would have definitely needed your help.”

“A hero huh…. So, what are you guys going to do now?”

“We’re going to the Demon kingdom next.”

“Demon kingdom?”

“Yeah, past the great forest to where the demon King is. I haven’t quite heard the details yet but my father requested it so.”

The demon kingdom, I wonder if Toa’s parents are there? Just to be safe I confirmed what direction the demon kingdom was in.

“What are you going to do Nito?”

“Me? I’m going back to Razhausen, I’ve made some friends there. By the way, I’ve only just remembered but, on the staircase you said something about abyss magic?”

“It’s just a fairytale, don’t worry about it. ”

Sieg said that it wasn’t important.

“I believed it to be just the contents of someone’s mind. ”

“And now?”

“Well the talking wand exists. ”

As he said this Sieg looked towards the wand standing near me. Yes, it’s a wand, yes it can stand and talk all on its own.

“So, Bell appears in this fairytale?”

“Its the story of a nameless adventurer with a talking wand. ”

“Why don’t they have a name?”

“I have no idea, I read it when I was little.”

Eliza looked sad, I wonder if it’s because she’s thinking of the past. Alford began talking after that.

“Its something that parents read to their kids, they say if you don’t treat your friends right, no one will remember you. It’s something my mom taught me.”

“And the abyss magic?”

“At the end it says something like ‘the traitorous adventurer was so obsessed with abyss magic that eventually he fell into the abyss.’ I don’t remember in detail but, it was most likely close to that.”

“A traitor huh.”

“Well, it’s a fairy-tale, you’re not supposed to think about that hard. Besides, abyss magic doesn’t necessarily refer to a specific kind of magic or a specific spell. It’s more used for people who abuse magic. Like they’ve fallen into the abyss.”

“So, Aries and Johannes, they had fallen into the abyss, so to speak.”

Alfords eyes seemed sad at that, after all, even if it was only for a moment they were family.

“I’ve been listening and you guys are just arbitrarily saying stuff. There’s always been an abyss.”

Bell for his part, looked thoroughly offended by the three of them.

“What do you mean there’s always been an abyss? What does that mean?”

Seig asked, a confused look on his face.

“It means what it means, all of master’s magic is the abyss. Abyss refers to a single existence in this world so stop talking about it like it’s some kind of fairytale.”

“Bell, explain.”

“Isnt it obvious? I’m master’s other half.”

“Other half? And more importantly what do you mean by master, can you stop calling me that?”

“I’m just listening to my heart. I want to call you master so I call you master. There’s no other meaning.”

The other three didn’t seem to understand and pretended to ignore bell, focusing on their steaks.

*

“So, you’re really not going to come with us?”

“No, I’m going home to Razhausen.”

When we arrived in front of the maingate it was nearly noon and Mira had grown noisy. Greyberg guards could be seen milling around.

“Sorry for calling you here so suddenly but, I appreciate your help. Thank you.”

“Its fine, I got experience for it. Anyway I might call on you next.”

The three of them laughed.

“Alright, I’m going to cast teleportation magic on you now but, I can only send you back to the spot you were in before the original spell. Is that ok?”

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

Looking back I could see Greyberg surrounded by its barrier, the place where Saeki was. No, not just him, where all those who abandoned me were. For some unknown reason I felt restless and lost.

“Bell.”

Why did I talk to Bell?

“I don’t know anything that master doesn’t already know. But not now, you feel that way to don’t you? ”

Bell answered with the feelings that were inside my heart.

“Probably but….I don’t know. ”

The teleportation magic activated and I was sent away from Greyberg.

“Emergency evacuation! Emergency evacuation! Citizens should evacuate immediately!”

As soon as I arrived an alarm started blaring inside my head.

“This…. Isn’t the announcer.”

“Wow, this place is noisy.”

Bell yawned as I looked around, I was in fact standing in my own room at the Ecarlate estate.

“What is this noise?”

The emergency warning kept blaring inside my head like it was trying to give me a headache. Looking out the window the garden appeared to be deserted but the town wasn’t visible from here.
I left the room and proceeded down the hallway, as I drew near the stairs I heard someone coming up.

“Ah! Masamune?!”

It was Brown.

“Where were you! I was worried.”

“Brown, what’s this noise, where is everybody?”

His expression grew dark when I asked.

“A monster horde has attacked the capital…”

“Huh?”

“That’s the citizen evacuation warning. Sierra and Hilda have already arrived outside the wall with the other White knights. Toa and Nem took off with them as soon as they heard the alarm. Right now, the adventurers and knights are fighting together to push back the monsters.”

My mind went blank, what the hell happened while I was gone?

“The white knights… all of them?”

“The details aren’t known by the public but that seems to be the case.”

“If Toa and Nem are on the battlefield right now then I need to know the details. What’s the situation like?” I asked suddenly.

“It doesn’t appear to be good, S rank monster’s have started appearing thats why the evacuation was sounded.”

“S rank….”

“That didn’t seem to be the case when this started but apparently things took a turn for the worse.”

“Turn for the worse?”

“Apparently a number of monster’s called a nootkerane showed up and some people died. Thats why the city is under evacuation.”

Brown’s expression was growing darker.

“I’m sorry, my wife and the other residents but, as a cat warrior myself I wasn’t able to stop those two.”

I dashed out of the house as Brown struggled to get the words out.

“Masamune!”

I have to get to them, now, the precious friends I’ve made.

*

The town that was usually bustling with people was so quiet Masamune’s footsteps seemed to echo between the buildings.

“What’s up with this place? There’s nobody here.”

Bell seemed to be complaining about the lack of people.

Masamune looked around at the those left still packing up there homes as he passed by Sharon’s shop.

“You’re not running away?”

Sharon appeared shocked.

“Sharon…..”

“Whos this old lady?”

“Its unfortunate, I’ve lived in this country for so long and I can’t do anything for it.”

Sharon stared of into the distance as she said this.

“I heard some adventurers talking about the battle, we don’t seem to be winning.”

“Thats not good Sharon! Sierra, Toa and even Nem is out there fighting right now! ”

“Toa!? That Demon child!? And Nem too!!!?”

It seemed that Sharon wasn’t aware of that.

“That child is so stupid!”

Tears appeared in Sharon’s eyes.

“Master let’s leave this old lady here, the smell of the dead is strong here.”

As Bell was talking I heard a cracking sound, it appeared like Sharon’s legs had gave out and she fell backwards onto her butt.

“Th- that wand!”

Masamune left quickly before she could continue.

“Wait!”

Sharon called after him.

“Are you actually going out there!?”

“…..”

“Stop! You’re just a healer! What could you possibly do?”

“Wha-! Master, what is that creature!? Is…she she a monster? Is she some sort of S ranked Grandma!? We should kill her now.”

“I’m on a hurry.”

Masamune continued on his way.

“I’m telling you to stop! You’re young! Don’t throw your life away, there’s more adventure to be had!”

Masamune stopped walking.

“Bell, it’s a little further to the gate.”

“Should we fly?”

“Fly?”

“Well Master can use 《God Speed》 but you don’t have a method of flying.”

“There are S rank monster’s there! You’re a healer even if you go you’ll just end up as food!”

“Theres still quite some distance to the gate, even if I used 《God Speed》I’d still have to weave through the buildings.”

As he said that suddenly masamune felt his back itch and two red shadows burst through the robe.

“Guh….”

“Wings of laziness, they’ll get you there quickly.”

“W- …..who are you? ”

Masamune spread his wings and a flew up into the sky.

“I’m going to save those three.”

“This is the Era of the abyss!”

Bell seemed excited as they flew off. Sharon stared after them as they disappeared, she watched as a black feather floated down. But when it touched the ground, it turned to ash
