Chapter 105: Griffith

“Oooh… It’s really big…”

“Right? This is the headquarter of Aspel’s guild after all. Come on, let’s go.”

After spending the evening at Fer-san’s secondary house, we went to the guild’s royal capital headquarter with Sig-san holding my hand all the way there while Fer-san and Chris-san followed behind us, talking between themselves.

But still, the sheer size of this building before us… It was big enough to fit 3 Pedrel branch and there were plenty of people coming in and out.

“Well, how about if we go in first?~”

Chris-san said as he opened the door for me. Flustered at his sudden action, I hurriedly went inside.

The guild was as spacious as it looked from the outside. There were several counters and a lot of people were lining up to use the guild’s service. The headquarters were filled with a mix of people who were clearly a non-combatant and adventurers unlike in Pedrell where they had separated divisions for the general public.

“Oh, there’s an empty spot over there. Excuse me…”

“Yes. Good afternoon. What can I help you with today?”

Right when I needed it, I saw a counter about to open. I went there and greeted the staff. The guild staff was a woman with rabbit ears. She smiled and greeted me back with an amiable laugh.

“Umm… My name is Ren Himukya Cleva. I have an appointment with the guild in two days from now so… I’m here to inform the guild of my arrival in this city…”

“Oh? An appointment? Please wait a moment while I verificate it first…”

I told her my name and my business to the guild but I guess since I looked like a young boy based on Alsar’s standard, she was unconvinced. It must be weird for someone who looked like a young boy like me to have an appointment with the guild. She excused herself with a confused expression on her face and went into the back room.

“Guess they hadn’t relayed the information to the frontliner yet.”

“Well~ There are a lot of people in here after all~ Pedrel is actually the odd one~ You can’t find much place where the people are as harmonious as the people in Pedrel~”

While I was sitting on a chair in front of the counter, the three of them were standing behind me and talking with each other. True. The guild’s staff and the adventurer in Pedrell were very close. Maybe everyone was amiable like that because Malik-san never put up a wall and was always ready to talk about all kinds of things with everyone?

“Thank you for waiting. I apologize for my earlier actions. The guild master would like to see you in the parlour upstairs.”

“Huh? But I just want to inform the guild about my arrival…”

The rabbit-eared lady returned and said that but I thought I only needed to inform the guild and nothing else? I wonder what happened?

“Umm… I was told there’s some paperwork to be talked about…”

“Oh, I see. The thing that Malik-san had entrusted to me. I understand. I’ll go there then.”

Ah… There’s this sealed letter that Malik-san had given to me when we were told about my promotion exam! If that’s the case, I better go and hand this over.

I stood up from my chair but since I didn’t know where to go, I made a gesture with my hand by pointing to the left and then to the right to ask which way I should go.

“I will show you the way. Please follow me.”

“Thank you.”

When she saw me make that gesture, the rabbit-eared lady looked at me with a face that said ‘what are you doing?’ as she told me she would take me to the parlour. I guess she already planned on escorting me from the start?

Then I went and followed the rabbit-eared lady.

“Ahh… Sorry about that. Ren Himukya Cleva-kun. I’m Griffith Pittman, the guild master of this place.”

I was ushered into a parlour where a stocky old man with beast ears was waiting for me. The old man, who appeared to be about 50 years old, jumped from his seat and quickly bowed at me in greeting.

I think this man must be the biggest man I’ve ever met in Alsar so far? Just like someone who stood on the top of the guild’s hierarchy, the old man introduced himself in an imposing manner. His grandeur made you spontaneously fix your posture.

“Ah, yes. I’m Ren Himukya Cleva. Would it be alright if the three of them joined us here?”

“Ooh, long time no see, everyone. I’m glad to see you all doing well. It’s okay, I don’t mind them joining us.”

After introducing myself in return, I asked permission for the three people that came with me to be allowed here. Griffith-san readily gave us his permission, he turned his attention to the three of them and grinned.

“You know each other?”

“We met during our promotion exam and this place used to be my main guild too.”

“Ah, I see.”

‘Well, take a seat.”

Ah, I see. The three of them did say they had to have a mock battle in front of representatives of each nation during their promotion exam. I guess they must’ve met with each other at that time. I’ve heard that the three of them originated from the royal capital but both Chris-san and Sig-san liked to travel here and there so I guess Fer-san must be the one most acquainted with Griffith-san?

After Griffith-san urged us to sit, I took a seat on a sofa in front of him. Fer-san then sat beside me while both Chris-san and Sig-san stood behind us. Somehow I felt like we often sat in this kind of position? Was this the predetermined position they had decided for any business related occasion?

“First thing first, you got a letter from Malik, right? Can I have those now?”

“Yes… Here is it.”

I took out the envelope Malik-san had entrusted to me and handed it over to him.

“………… Okay, thank you for the letter. With this, you can take the promotion exam now. Have you prepared your resolution?”

“Resolution…. You said…?”

He opened the tightly sealed envelope with a paper knife that he brought with him. For some reason, I was waiting for him to read and confirm the content of the letter with a bated breath. It appeared there was no problem with the letter and he smiled again at me, making slight wrinkles on the corner of his eyes.

But still… Resolution…?

“Yes. I still can’t tell you what kind of exam you will have yet but the test could be dangerous, you know?”

His face stiffened as he smiled, he said such a thing with a straight face but I wondered what kind of thing they would make me do. As I feared, maybe they’d make me go through a mock battle as well?

“Yes… I’ll be alright. If I have the ability to do it, I think I want to try doing my best first.”

I had prepared myself to face a dangerous situation when I decided to become an adventurer so I didn’t see any problem with it. My only problem right now was whether I could pass the exam or not…

“Griffith-san~ If it’s Ren-chan, he’s going to be fine, you know?~ He’s the leader of our party and our fiancé after all~”

“That’s right. I’ve never met a better support magician than Ren.”

“Yes. I assure you that you should be looking forward to Ren-kun’s performance.”

“Oh? If you say so then it must be something worth waiting for. Well… That’s the only thing I want to hear. I’ve received the documents so that’s it for today. I’ll see you again in three days.”

The three of them stared at Griffith-san and said such a thing with a very confident expression on their face but…

Please don’t raise the hurdle so high like that! Look… Griffith-san is now looking at me excitedly like he just found a new toy.

Griffith-san was a big guy but when I saw his small beast-ears twitching excitedly like that… He actually looked adorable… I knew it. Beast-ears were simply foul play. But I wonder what kind of beastman Griffith-san was?

“Please don’t get your hopes up too much, okay? Also… Umm… I’m sorry for asking this out of the blue but Griffith-san, what kind of beastman are you?”

I couldn’t contain my curiosity so I went ahead and asked that.

I mean… Just look at his ear. His ears look small compared to his physique and they’re kinda round too. They look so adorable… I might come across as being rude but… We’ve finished our business here and I don’t want to leave without quenching my curiosity first…

“Puh-…. Hahahahahaha! You’re the first person who ever asked that question straight to my face! My… I guess I still have a long way to go… Fufu… I’m a bear by the way.”

When he heard my question, Griffith-san looked puzzled for a moment before he burst out laughing while holding his stomach.

Eh? Maybe he’s so famous that everyone already knows without asking him first?! Uwah… Of course he’d laugh then… But still, so he’s a bear. Somehow him being a bear made a lot of sense. So that means… He might have a little round tail like a bear…. No, I…I don’t think I want to see it though.

“Griffith-san already retired now but he was a famous S-rank adventurer in the same generation as Malik-san.”

“Yup, yup~ 【Griffith The Beast of Destruction】is his nickname~”

“I don’t get called by that name much anymore though. Ah, right. I heard you were adopted by Malik. How is he doing now?”

Beast of Destruction… But he looks so composed right now… I wonder what he was like when he was active as an adventurer?

After that, we all talked about Malik-san for a while before we left the guild.

Just three days more… I wonder what kind of thing I will have to do …
