Chapter 108: Promotion Exam 2

“Please wait here.”

“Yes. Thank you.”

The training ground the rabbit-eared lady escorted me to was twice the size of the training ground in Pedrel’s guild. She quickly went back after she led us here… As I thought, I guess I would need to have a mock battle or something like it since she brought us here?

“I wonder what I will have to do…”

“Hm~ … I didn’t think Ren-chan will need to do any mock battle since you’re a support magician though~”

“They must’ve known Ren-kun has made a contract with a summoned beast so they’re trying to test your abilities here.”

“Well whatever it is, just don’t get hurt.”

Sig-san tried to pat my head as usual but I quickly avoided his touch because I didn’t want him to mess my hair after Corey-san went through all of that to make my hair beautiful like this. As soon as I entered the training ground, I had been leaning against the training ground’s wall and before I started a conversation with the three of them.

“Why are you avoiding me?”

“I just got my hair all dolled up so…”

“If that’s the case then I will pat you gently enough to not mess your hair. Don’t avoid me again.”

Sig-san said that while he motioned with his hand for me to come closer to him. I then leaned my head toward him and true to his words, Sig-san was being gentle with my hair. His touch was barely fluttering against my head.

I knew it. I really like having my head stroked like this. Back when I was in Japan, I didn’t get patted often so perhaps I became starved for a pat because of it. Now I really like having my head patted like this.

“Oof! Here I go!”

“Ah, let me help you. Where do you want to take this to?”

“Ren-kun, you have an important exam coming right after this. Leave it to me.”

“I-I can’t let a prince do that for me! O-Owahhh!”

“Ooh… Amazing…”

Despite still in the middle of an exam, I still had my head patted with. I was enjoying myself when I saw the rabbit-eared lady return and opened the door vigorously. She was holding a long, folding table in her hands so I offered to help her carry it but Fer-san quickly interjected and said he’d help her instead.

She must’ve become flustered at our offer since she suddenly straightened her back and carried the long table with great speed. Even though she had been having trouble carrying it before.

Is this what people often refer to as ‘adrenaline rush’?”

Of course she must’ve felt uncomfortable to have a prince help her carry it. Especially since she worked in the royal capital. The social pressure must be tremendous for her.

“Haah… Haah… Haah… I did it…”

“Umm… Thank you for your hard work. 【Heal】… Do you feel better now?”

“Huh? You’re right… Thank you very much! …. But… [Heal], was it…?”

After that, the rabbit-eared lady went back and forth carrying and bringing more and more folding tables to the training ground. We offered to help her again but she quickly refused. I did try to just go straight and grab the table myself but she seemed to have already come to the conclusion that me helping her, equaled to Fer-san helping her so she immediately pulled the table away from me. After I saw her do that, I decided to just watch her do her thing in order to respect her intention.

She somehow was able to finish carrying all those tables a short while later. When I saw her heaving for air, I came close to her and cast [Heal]. She looked confused for a while, wondering why I cast [Heal] on her when she was only feeling exhausted but as soon as she felt the effect, she quickly thanked me although she was still looking perplexed.

Ah, that’s right. Normally, people only use [Heal] to cure injuries but since my [Heal] can be considered as some sort of cheat, I can also cure people’s fatigue with it. I had been casting [Heal] on the people that already knew about my cheat-like ability so I almost forgot that normal [Heal] can’t do it.

“Fufu~ Ren-chan is so amazing, right?~ That’s why he’s taking this promotion exam~”

Even though Chris-san wasn’t talking about himself, he looked very proud and brimming with confidence as he said that to her.

“Oh! That’s true. He’s really amazing. Thank you for your help. The representatives will be coming here soon so please wait here for a little while. Now then, if you will excuse me…”

The rabbit-eared lady seemed to be satisfied with Chris-san’s explanation. She bowed her head once again to thank me before she returned to her station.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

“Hey, sorry for making you wait. Let’s begin the practical skill test.”

About five minutes later, the representatives from before appeared in the training ground in succession. The elf who had been interviewing me before smiled at me before he went to his seat. He was sitting in the middle before, so maybe he was the most important person in here? You couldn’t judge an elf’s age from their physical appearance alone so even though he might’ve looked like a 30 year old man, his actual age must be much older than 30…

“It’s been a while since we last had a support magician taking the A-rank promotion exam so we needed to take a lot of things into consideration but anyway… We want you to show us the essence of a support magician which is buff and debuff magic. Especially [Sleep] and [Root] which you had used to subjugate the Redondo Dragon before. But of course, the opponent we have prepared for you will have a high level of magic resistance by applying [Magic Barrier] buff before you get to cast those two debuffs on them. Okay?”

“Umm… Debuff… To whom?”

Ooh… So there aren’t many A-ranked support magicians then? If I get to pass this promotion test, it’d be great if I can meet and talk with them though. Buff and debuff magic, huh… Those two are the main point of support for magicians so of course they’d need to test it out… But… There’s no way they would ask me to cast debuff magic on Chris-san, Fer-san and Sig-san, right?

“Fufu~ We will ask this lady to help us.”

“… Geez. Stop pushing this old and decrepit me too hard…”

The elf-san looked over his head and from behind the examiner’s back, there appeared an old woman walking toward us with unsteady steps. Judging from her physical appearance, she looked like a human. She had a bent back, a result from her old age. Her hair had a beautiful grey colour on it, the trace of her hair’s original colour was nowhere to be seen. Despite her brittle posture, her hair was cut short neatly, giving a refreshing image to her whole look. She was carrying a big staff, which she used as a walking cane. She was wearing a robe, just like me, indicating she was either a wizard or support magician.

But…

Her robe was painted in bright yellow, it actually hurt my eyes a little to look at it… I believed there was no one with such a flashy robe like her in the conference room earlier, right? I mean if there was, I’d definitely remember her since she looked very conspicuous. But wait! I needed to go against this old lady?!

“Don’t tell me she’s… 【Moonlight Witch】?! … I thought she never leaves Bottrov Forest?”

When Sig-san’s gaze landed on that old lady, his tail immediately stood on its end. He looked very surprised. Although Chris-san and Fer-san didn’t say anything, their expression was enough to tell me they were as surprised as Sig-san.

“You’re right on the money, kiddo. But this shady elf… He told me there’s finally another promotion test for a support magician after mine so I only came to check this myself but… I didn’t expect he’d use me like this…”

Since she has a nickname… That means she’s also an A-rank adventurer? Huh? Since she said I’m the first support magician to be promoted after her, that means… She’s also a support magician? But still, how many years ago was it? Since she already looks this old…

“Ren-kun, this lady is Ljudmila, known as 【Moonlight Witch】, who lives in the neighbouring country’s forest. She rarely ever leaves the forest, hence why she’s so famous.”

“This lady is an A-rank support magician, you know~ That robe is her trademark but since she never leaves the forest, this is my first time seeing it too~”

Fer-san and Chris-san gave me a short summary in a small voice.

I knew it. She’s really a support magician…

That extremely flashy robe must be the thing that made Sig-san able to immediately recognize her even though they rarely met. The robe was bright yellow and ordained with embroidery from red, blue and other multicoloured threads. Of course she’d stand out no matter where she was with that robe. Rather than a faint, dim glow like a moonlight, her robe was something akin to blazing sunlight…

Oh and also! Since they said she’s an A-rank support magician, I really want to talk with her after this!

“Fufufu…. I’ve been looking forward to this since there’s no A-rank support magician except for me but… My, you’re a very adorable boy, aren’t you?”

The lady laughed and said that. She looked like she was having so much fun.

“Huh? You’re the only one?!”

So there’s no other A-rank support magician but Ljudmila-san?!

“Hm. That’s right. Now then… 【Magic Barrier】. Why don’t you come at me now, boy?”

“Yes!”

I didn’t know her actual age but… Judging from her appearance, I’d say it seemed unlikely for her to have taken the test like 10 or 20 years ago. Maybe no support magician had taken the promotion test for the last 50 years or so.

Ljudmila-san then smiled and laughed before she cast [Magic Barrier] on herself, making a rain of sparkling light all over her body in the process. She walked away from everyone with wobbling steps, using her staff to support her balance. After she was a good distance away from everyone, she called for me so I went there to her place.

Somehow I didn’t feel like I was in danger or anything. She didn’t emit any hostility or any malicious intent either…

“Umm… [Sleep], right?”

“Yes. I think that elf and the others would like to see that. Why don’t you try casting [Sleep] on me first? I’ve been living for a long time already. It’s not going to be easy breaking through my barrier, you know.”

Ljudmila-san said that as she scowled at the elf.

I guess their relationship is not that great? But… I guess their relationship should be good though given that the elf actually contacted her to inform her about the promotion exam?

To be honest, I didn’t want to cast any debuff on this old lady but… Both [Sleep] and [Root] wouldn’t hurt her physically so… I should just let myself loose!

“【Sleep】!”

“Ugh…”

I faced Ljudmila-san, held up my palm and cast [Sleep]. For a moment, she was swaying a little but then she stood back up again and stared right at me while gripping on her staff as a support.

So my debuff didn’t go through after all?! Even though I had given all I had… As expected, I’m still not fit to be A-rank yet…

“Huft… I expect nothing less from someone who’s taking a promotion exam. I’ve put a lot of effort in my [Magic Barrier] but… Right now I feel very sleepy but… If I were to sleep now, it would tarnish the reputation of 【Moonlight Witch】so I shall stay awake.”

“I think I’ve been feeling over confident with myself! As I thought, meeting you really brought me down a peg!”

It seemed she was trying to praise me but still… My debuff wasn’t effective on her… Up until now, I never encountered any problem with my magic before so I had been acting presumptuous. I mustn’t be overconfident. I needed to be careful so I wouldn’t get carried away again.

“Okay, next is [Roots]!”

Ljudmila-san shook her head vigorously to shake the sleepiness away. She then told me to cast the next debuff, which was [Roots]. I could feel myself getting psyched up again and stared back at Ljudmila-san.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

Sig’s POV

“I guess it’s true his debuff is effective on Redondo Dragon.”

“Yeah. I can’t believe he managed to make that Ljudmila stagger on her feet… But even so, why did she agree to help with the promotion exam?”

The examiners at the table were talking about Ren after he walked away with Ljudmila. The three of us were also standing beside the table, watching Ren’s performance but…

As expected from Ren. He almost landed a hit on that Moonlight Witch.

Ren was simply lacking in experience. If he kept on practising for a few more times, surely he would be able to break through Ljudmila’s barrier. But still, why would she, who was infamous for not leaving the forest and rarely taking any quest, come all the way here just to watch Ren’s promotion exam?

“Fufu, it’s simple. I only said that we finally have a support magician taking the A-rank promotion exam, don’t you want to come and check it out? Then after she’s here I told her, by all means, why don’t you test his ability for yourself? There’s no way you’d get defeated so easily by him, right? You’re the Moonlight Witch after all… Then there she is.”

“So you stirred her up….”

…. This elf is a really tricky one. The female examiner who’s sitting next to him also looked a little taken aback.

“Somehow Ren-chan looks excited~”

“Yes. It must’ve felt exhilarating since Ren-kun’s debuff never failed even once.”

“This is Ren’s first time meeting a senior support magician and a superior one at that. Well it’s not like he has to win. Ren just needs to show what he’s capable of. The three of us also only need to watch over him and make sure he doesn’t force himself or get injured.”

Just like what Chris had said, Ren’s wide eyes were now sparkling and twinkling with great vigour. The three of us and Malik were strong but our occupation was on a different side from Ren’s. In the first place, there weren’t many support magicians so it’d be hard to even meet one in Pedrel. Even if we did meet one, they were far inferior than Ren so it was great Ren could meet Moonlight Witch, a support magician who you could say had superior ability than Ren.

As long as you could show what you could do, it didn’t matter if you lost the match in this case. Or rather, it’d pose a bigger problem if an experienced A-ranked senior lost to a newbie.

But…

“Ren, hang in there.”

I couldn’t help myself. I still wish you can win.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

Name: Ljudmila

Age : 78 years old

Height : 188cm

A blonde (now grey haired) support magician with yellow eyes. Her nickname is 《Moonlight Witch》. The only A-rank support magician who’s living in Bottrov Forest. The bright, flashy yellow robe is her trademark. She appears shorter than she actually is because she has bent back from old age.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

T/N: I wonder where the name ‘Moonlight’ came from… Blonde with bright yellow robe… Also as always, I like how Ren can still experience failure. I don’t really like very OP characters. Even though Ren is still OP in here but he’s not that OP. (๑ > ᴗ < ๑)
