Chapter 170

After the last 3 days of school right now, is the 2-month long vacation. Yesterday was the last day of the regular school holiday, so I was busy preparing to go back to my parent’s house and couldn’t do anything else. If you don’t go shopping for what you need, pack your things, and prepare to some extent, you’ll be in a panic just before you leave.

I’m pretty much done with the preparations, and Katharina and Isabella helped me, so I didn’t have to worry too much. In the first place, I have to return to the royal capital after 2 months back at my parent’s home, so it’s not like I’m taking everything with me. I got things I needed to buy in the royal capital, but other than that, I didn’t have much luggage, so I only had to make simple preparations.

That’s why I’m impatiently waiting at home, but at school, there are depressing results announcements, so it’s still too early to get excited. The 3rd day is only the closing ceremony, so the results will be announced today or tomorrow. While thinking about such things, Mikoto arrived a little earlier than usual when I was sitting down since first thing in the morning, as I always was.

“Morning,” Mikoto said. “Have you seen your grades yet, Flora?”

“Good morning, Princess Mikoto… wait, grades?” I asked, tilting my head.

“The results are already posted outside,” Mikoto replied.

“Huh? Is that so?” I said.

It wasn’t there when I came in. In the end, I came too early in the morning, so I guess they haven’t prepared to post it yet. On the other hand, if you come later than now, you’ll get caught up in the carriage traffic, and you’ll be extremely late or spend more time waiting there. It’s true that we arrived too early, but it’s also a good idea to delay the posting.

“It is,” Mikoto said. “It’s posted on the bulletin board. If you haven’t seen yours yet, Flora, let’s go together.”

“Okay,” I said.

I head out into the hallway with Mikoto. It’s completely obvious that she and Mikoto are already good friends. Well, Helene and the other annoying students are gone now, and things have become quieter, so even if anyone does find out, it won’t be too much of a problem…

We arrived at the bulletin board and found a long list of names and scores. Woah… will the scores be made public…? When I was on Earth, Japanese schools didn’t have this kind of system, but here it seems that your grades are completely exposed.

“Umm… I’m… buh!” I sputtered as I checked my grades.

My name is posted in a different place than regular names. Apparently, the Top 10 will be specially removed from the regular list and made a display. It is also made into a massive glimmering frame so that it stands out. That’s the worst thing about it, it being so obvious.

“Um… what’s the score written in small brackets?” I asked.

“Oh, that’s the score for the practical exam,” Mikoto said.

Huh……. I look at my name and see the score beneath it, “Flora Charlotte von Carruthers, 600 (100)”. In other words, 500 points for all written exams across 5 subjects plus 100 points for the practical exam, and the numbers in parentheses are the scores for the practical exams.

………… So this means, I got 100 points in all subjects.

That’s fine. I thought my self-grading would say that much. I didn’t know how what my score for the practical exam was, but I’m grateful that it was 100 points. The problem is that I’m in the #1 spot. My surroundings start whispering. Perhaps they think I was cheating…

After all, the #2 is at 540 points. Roughly speaking, the average for each subject is around 90 points. Mikoto is also barely ranked 10th in this giant, glittering display. Her score is 522 points… being in 1st place with a score of 600 seems a little too conspicuous.

When I was a student on Earth, I think the scores were even closer than they are here. I think there were multiple people with 490 points in the 5 subjects, and even after that, there should have been many people crowded together with minuscule differences. Compared to that, I think that the grades at this school trend quite low.

From this feeling, I wonder if it feels like a fairly high score even if you just get 90 points. that’s strange……. I don’t think it was that difficult…

“You’re ranked 10th, Mikoto. I thought your score would be a little higher, but…” I started.

“Sorry about that,” Mikoto said. “I don’t know the history of this country. It’s the first time I’ve learned it at school and I’m not interested in it, so I didn’t study much.”

Ahh… that’s right. If it was the history of her country, she would have learned it from a private tutor, but from Mikoto’s point of view, the history of the Kingdom of Ploiss was probably the first foreign country she’d learned about, and only after coming to its school. Moreover, if you are not interested in the history of other countries, you will have to put too much effort into it…

In the same pattern, politics is closely related to the history of this country, and the political system is also that of this country. For Mikoto, it may be unavoidable that she is not good at the history and politics of Ploiss. Even so, she must have had great results to be in 10th place after all was said and done.

I take a quick look at our other friends. Alexandra scores better than Mikoto. She is in 6th place with 534 points. At a glance, Alexandra seemed to have come to check on her grades, and she looked satisfied with the results. She’d be pretty happy even if she was in 6th.

Simon is 14th with 509 points. Too bad. It looks like he could have aimed for the Top 10 with a bit more effort, but it’s a delicate matter. Christa ranks 32nd with 487 points. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good either. I guess it’s normal. But Christa has just had that thing happen to her, so should I say she’s doing better than I expected? It could have been better if it wasn’t for that.

In any case, the scores and rankings of the grades are quite uneven. There are places where even if there is a point differential of about 10, you’ll only go up or down 1 rank. At the school I went to in Japan, I thought it would have been a fierce competition where even 1 point difference could change the rankings, but it seems that’s not the case here.

It’s embarrassing that my name is decorated and posted so that it stands out, but I didn’t do that, and if it’s the school’s policy, there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s too embarrassing to sabotage your grades so that you don’t stand out next time. It’d be trouble if it was thought of as a one-time stroke of luck, so let’s do our best to keep it in the top ten. 1

On the 1st Day of 3, the grades were announced, the answer sheets were returned, handouts were distributed, and it ended with just a little bit of attention. At this rate, I can’t help but wonder what they’ll do tomorrow. I wonder if it was a business that could be completed in a day. Well, if you think of it as attending whatever days are left after the exams, it might be something like this.

So I decided to write it off. The 1st Day was a normal day, so I thought that the 2nd Day would be just to go to school and show my face.

Tomorrow is the 2nd Day of 3, with only the closing ceremony left. The reason is… yes! SUM-MER HOME-WORK! The student’s natural enemy, homework over a long break, reared its head.

Well, if you think about it calmly, you have 2 months off, so if you do a little bit every day, it’s not that much. If you take classes at this school, you will probably study a lot more. But the long vacation homework that was put out all at once feels like a giant stack. It’s an amount that makes me wonder if this kind of thing can be finished during the holidays.

“Why do they want us to do something so inefficient?” Mikoto grumbled quietly. “Why not just send us home and do self-study?”

Mikoto also seems to be fed up with this amount of homework. I know how she feels. But I also understand the thoughts of schools and academies that give out this kind of homework.

“That’s true,” I said, “but there aren’t many people who really study at home unless they’re forced to do it as homework, right?”

Yes. Even in schools and academies, if the students really study properly at home, they probably think that’s enough. But who is going to study properly after being told to do it? Without assignments and submissions, most students would just play around.

Of course, there are people in the world who do self-study without being told to do so. In particular, children from families aiming to enter a good school will be studying on their own without being told by the school administration. But most people don’t. That’s why schools and academies collect submissions like this, so they give out homework.

I was given a nightmare amount of homework, but if I do a little bit each day, it’s not that much. That’s how I convinced myself and finished the second day.

The 3rd and Final Day was just the closing ceremony. After receiving a brief greeting and notes during the break, it ends immediately in the morning. It seems that this kind of event does not change much even if the country or the world changes. It was not so different from what I experienced in Japan.

When I go home after the closing ceremony, I do the final confirmation to go back to my parent’s house tomorrow. I’m done packing. That’s what I’m bringing home. I’ll be back here when the holidays are over, so I don’t mind leaving my daily necessities behind. It’s all about souvenirs and stuff like that.

My family and House Servants are going back to Manor Carruthers. Katharina, Helmut, and Isabella, of course, but this time Oliver will also come along. Oliver’s team, the wagon train, and the head cook, Damian, seem to be arriving late. Furthermore, not all members of Oliver’s squad will return to Caan territory, and there are groups who remain behind. Despite that, I’m wondering if it’s okay for the captain, Oliver, to leave so quickly… but that’s fine.

Mother and daughter Gabriella and Alexandra, Louisa, Claudia, and Mikoto will also accompany us. Louisa has secured vacation from her farm work, and the king recently gave his permission for Claudia’s leave. Mikoto seems to have left her parents’ home without permission, so there is no particular problem or process.

It’s going to be a pretty big group, but I knew that beforehand, so the number of station horses in each place has increased significantly. Unlike when I came to the royal capital, I wonder if there are more people instead of luggage. The number of carriages will also increase accordingly, so many horses should have been transported to each station in advance. I didn’t actually go there, but I gave instructions to do so.

And in fact, this time Christa was also invited. Now that House Bayen is being pursued in the investment fraud case, House Reingen is also in trouble as they were part of Bayen’s faction. Besides, Christa is acting strong, but it’s been a while since she’s been assaulted. She must have been seriously injured.

That’s why I decided to persuade Christa a bit and invite her to Caan territory. Lord and Lady Reingen were also persuaded through Helmut’s actions. I don’t know what the exchange was like, but Helmut seemed to persuade Christa’s parents wonderfully, and he got her permission to come to our house during the long vacation.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to leave the current Christa alone in the Reingen Residence. Her parents probably don’t have time to care about Christa either, and it’s possible that their relationship with Christa has become delicate. Above all, it would be nice to have more time to spend with a person of the opposite sex who you fancy. Even I know that Christa has a faint love for Helmut.

It can be said that it is up to Helmut whether that faint love sublimes into true love or ends with just the first childhood love. If he accepts Christa’s feelings and faces them head-on, they’ll eventually feel the same way about each other. That’s Christa and Helmut’s problem, so I’m not going to intervene. All I can do is prepare as much time as possible for the two of them and support my friend Christa.

It seems that Simon and Emma will return to their family territory. Simon’s and Emma’s home territories aren’t that far from mine, so they’re pretty far away. Emma’s House is originally located a little away from the territory of Simon’s House, but there is an enclave next to it. It seems that the enclave is also a health resort, so Emma is heading there.

Emma is also acting strong, but lately, she’s become quite quiet. From now on, Simon will support Emma and the two of them will flirt at the resort. Simon turned red and denied it, but I’m sure a virgin boy of his age would suddenly get close to a girl during a long vacation and lose his virginity over that time! Or so I’m thinking he would.

How do I know that? Because there was a time when I thought so, too. Or so I say…

Everyone is different… Come to think of it, I didn’t feel that way because I have memories from my previous life, but if it was this age in this life, we would all be in the prime of our youth in modern Japan… everyone should celebrate their youth.

What about me? Somehow, I feel like I’m not enjoying my youth so much, now that I’m in the prime of my youth. In my previous life, I wasted my youth and regretted it, but will I repeat the same thing in this life? What do I want? What should I do?

I have to think about myself as well as other people… I can’t just settle and compromise for everyone forever…

I wonder if there will be any changes in this chapter of my youth during this long vacation…
