Azrie Part 2/2

[Incubation Period: 2 days 4 hours 12 minutes.]

I rested and counted my arrows. I had twenty-two arrows after the chase, and using the quiver every so often left me twenty-five arrows, which wasn’t great but it was what it was. I didn’t mind burning some arrows and some mana potions if it meant finishing my quest and injuring the guardian. I wanted to save some mana potions but it did not seem possible, at least I had a feeling that I would not be moving from here until I killed both guardians, and that would take a while.

I shook my head standing before the door, the ability to basically clean myself and relax after every battle was something I didn’t know I needed. But it wasn’t time to relax, instead, I grabbed my spear and stared at the rock that blocked my doorway. The guardians had just finished fighting not too long ago — not like it mattered — so it was a good time to go kill some things; maybe even a good chance at killing a Guardian.

I felt odd, willingly going to the place in which I almost died numerous times, but it was the cycle of getting stronger I supposed. It was a constant grind to try not to die, and at the same time my initial thoughts of revenge were— well things had changed a bit, but I was a killer in the end. For now, I simply had to survive and be strong enough to survive past the Skirmish. I did not know what came after the Incubation period, so I had to be as strong as possible for that. If one of the quests required me to be level 20 then there had to be a reason for it.

Pushing my mana into the spear tip, I rose and pierced, the rock caved and melted. It didn’t take more than a couple minutes of hitting it before it simply melted away, crumbled and fell apart. The entrance was once more relatively clean and had ease of access through sliding, which I found important, however this time it wasn’t going to be explosive or anything. Slowly walking a bit forward I scouted and quickly found a group of ants heading for the frontline. They were relatively far away, perhaps close to 60 meters away. Inquiries were sent and I got only two out of three results. It seemed that was about the max range of it.

[Suvia Ant. Lvl. 19]

[Suvia Ant. lvl. 17]

I nocked an arrow, having no qualms about using them and quickly powered the bow itself, I wasn’t going to waste a single droplet of mana — if it was truly liquid — I hyper focused on the outermost ant, the one outside of range and aimed very carefully. Not knowing any better, they simply walked in a line as I finally lined up the shot. A smile left me as I let go of the string, it slid through my fingers causing no pain whatsoever, the arrow streaked and wheezed through the cave under the glittering purple of mana, with a whisper, a thin sense of preservation, the ant looked. Slammed, its head was hammered onto the ground rolling a meter away from its position, the ant trembled but was unable to do anything.

The other two looked around in confusion, but it was too late. An arrow waltzed through the side and hit one through its neck, not two seconds later the other one tried to cast a spell but an arrow hit its lobe and sent it tumbling onto the ground.

Three shots, three kills?

I frowned seeing all the ants unresponsive on the ground, their limbs and things were twitching but they showed no response of wanting to die. Well, they didn’t want to die, that much was clear. I nocked another arrow but decided against shooting it, instead I simply decided to stare at all of them. They twitched, their antennae softly trembling. A minute or so later more ants arrived to their aid and began to eat them? I frowned but decided to keep observing. The ants weren’t being eaten but something else.

More time passed, and finally I got some notifications.

There was no level up, but that was okay.

[Ecology Dissection III (Uncommon E) — Progress (15/15) (Completed) Would you like to receive your rewards?]

I received the rewards of the quest, quickly getting five shards of ambition, a fist-full of them. I inquired out of curiosity.

[Shard of Ambition (Rare item) — It is said that those with ambition will achieve greatness. Gather ten of these to acquire a small feat. (9/10)]

So they were all bundled? That was neat. I stored them away to wherever the System disappeared my rewards to. I was one shard short of getting a small feat, or Feat? I didn’t really get it, but it was a reward nonetheless. I quickly got the next quest.

[Ecology Dissection IV (Rare D): Now familiar with the land, one must research further. Reward: 5 Shards of Great Ambition. Condition: Kill Beasts of a Higher Grade. (0/5)]

Well, that quickly went from something I was looking forward to, to something that was going to happen by itself eventually. Well, now it didn’t matter what I killed, did it? My quests would progress only from Guardian kills or any type of kills in general, there was no longer a requirement of killing higher level things.

My eyes moved around and found a beeline of small ants, about twice the distance from the previous ants. I still had twenty-two arrows to mess with, and neither of the guardians seemed keen on showing up soon. With all that in mind, I slid towards the place at a leisurely walking pace. It took about thirty seconds before I was close enough to shoot them from a comfortable position, it was after all a package deal. The ants followed after each other in lines and sometimes circled around.

[Suvia Worker Ant. Lvl. 8]

Oh, they were different? Well, I counted about ten ants, so needless to say they stayed in groups but it didn’t matter. I simply aimed at where the concentration was the highest—four ants total—pushed mana onto my left arm, and onto my arrow, and shot.

The arrow wheezed with the silence of the string, cut through the air like a glowing beacon: streaked; a verdant shooting star—a falling meteor befell on the ants. A green explosion boomed in the distance as some ants were blasted a couple of meters back and others instantly died.

[Level up: You have achieved level 18.]

I smiled before quickly putting the two points into Vigor once more. In an instant it went from 42 to 45. It sure was going quick. And expectedly, or unexpectedly, a shriek enveloped the air and the cave, I had only been killing ants so i simply turned as I saw the earth shift around a gaping hole at the back of the clearing, the cave itself trembled as the Queen Guardian emerged, its appearance was disheveled and its once glorious body of rock was profusely bleeding black liquid. I smiled, perhaps this was a great opportunity.
