The Nothing Man

His body kept sinking.

Radan was overcome by the comfort of not being able to do anything, and he let himself be swept away.

He wanted to empty his mind.

He wanted to be rid of everything about his body. He wanted to take it all out, to empty it all, and become nothing.

Neither cursed, nor a monster. A being that is nothing.

– Do you think this is the end?

He was asked in a dream.

Radan could now see them clearly.

She looked to be a young and beautiful woman.

On the other hand, she also looked ancient and exhausted.

She seemed to have lived a very long time.

–No. It doesn’t just end this way. The curse is not completed yet.

She reached her hand out and grabbed Radan’s neck.

Radan, who wasn’t breathing, opened his mouth. Then, a set of sharp white teeth were exposed.

–You will never be able to overcome this curse. Never!

He wanted to ask her why, but every time he tried to speak, his tongue just darted in and out.

In the dream, Radan was a snake.

Radan crept towards her. He wanted to grab her and ask her……what is that curse, and why couldn’t he overcome it?

But his slithering body was absurdly slow, and the beautiful woman moved away exceedingly fast.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t catch her.

“Ah……”

His eyes were filled with sorrow.

Tears flowed from his blue, water-crystal, like eyes.

“Kii, kiik kee.”

“Oh no. I think he was crying. Is he alright?”

“Oh really. Let me look. Is he hurting somewhere?”

“I really don’t know. I’ve never rescued a man who was drowning in a river before. Should we call a doctor again?”

“It’s only been ten minutes since the doctor left, hasn’t it?”

“Then no, we shouldn’t. Nevertheless, why is he crying? What’s the reason he’s crying all of a sudden?”

“Well. That’s what we can’t know. Why don’t we ask him after he wakes up?”

“We don’t know when he’ll wake up? He’s been lying in bed like he’s dead, for three days.”

“Kiiik, Kik-kikkiik!”

“Hey, Zorg! Don’t play around with that. Don’t touch that blindfold. I was told that it can never be removed. Hadir gave me a very adamant warning.”

“Kiik Kiikk!”

“You’re too noisy, True One. He’s getting more and more rebellious lately!”

“Be quiet!”

“Uh, what?”

“He moved! He seems to be waking up now.”

They didn’t know who he was, but the man was right.

As he was told, they kept him blindfolded, and Radan regained consciousness.

“…….”

It was dark.

It was because a thick blindfold was covering his eyes.

Radan reached out and fumbled in front of himself.

“Kiik!”

Something warm and fluffy touched his hand.

“… … !”

Radan shrank back in surprise. It was a strange feeling that he had never felt before.

“This guy! Don’t surprise the patient. Oh, don’t be too scared. He’s my monkey but he does as he pleases. Nevertheless, he doesn’t bite.”

“Kiikk, Kik!!”

The monkey was probably a small animal. The monkey made an unpleasant noise, as though he were saying “The man is hurt”.

“He is a monkey, but he hates being called a monkey. It’s definitely not normal when you look at it like that, but as our Lord scion has said, he doesn’t bite, so there’s no need to be afraid. Oh, before that. I’m late to say my greetings. Hello. Are you okay? Do you feel pain anywhere?”

He was distracted by the sudden onslaught of words.

“It doesn’t seem like……”

While Radan was choosing an answer, the following words continued without pause.

“Oh, I’m really happy. The doctor said you were really lucky. It is said that people rarely come down a river like that, and are still in good health without any injuries anywhere. Oh, to be unscathed means that your body is in good shape. Mr. Radan was unconscious for three days after we got you out of the river. So, by the way, does your head feel alright?”

“Yes……? It’s fine……”

“Oh, we probably don’t know that yet, because you just woke up. However, it seems that there is nothing wrong, by the way you’re talking and doing things.”

The man referred to as a Lord suddenly interjected.

“I’m glad you woke up. We waited all three days without sleeping while waiting for you to wake up. So, by the way, what color are your eyes?”

“…..what?”

Radan faltered at the unexpected question.

The question was abrupt, but the answer was slow. He didn’t even think about the color of his eyes.

Moreover, there was a sense of enthusiasm in the voice that asked that question.

“I’ve been dying to know that. I considered lifting the blindfold while I waited, but somehow it felt like spying, so I felt a little uneasy…… ”

Vendel raised his voice in amazement.

“Oh, please, successor Lord! What a disgraceful way to be to someone who has just woken up and still hasn’t come to his senses! Oh, I’m sorry. I apologize for our constant rudeness. As I said, he is not good at deciding between the right time and place. Oh, that’s fine. Just lie down. Oh, can I give you my full name now? My name is Vendel Reed. Feel free to call me Vendel. I’ve heard of Mr. Radan’s name, so I already know it. However, I don’t know your surname. Oh, if you’re uncomfortable with me calling you Mr. Radan, I’ll call you something different. Can you tell me your surname?”

It seems that the person called ‘Lord’ was not a good listener.

“I’ll bet Zorg that they’re blue. For some reason, I think it has to be blue.”

“Lord!”

“Kiiak!”

Vendel and Zorg gave a warning at the same time. In particular, Zorg, who became the prize in the bet, looked very displeased.

No matter what he did, he made a painful sound.

“Ugh. It hurts, fellow. Alright. I’ll bet on something other than you. Well, how about this ring?”

“What?! You’re not referring to the ring you’re wearing right now, are you?”

“This is correct.”

“What in the world…… ! Do you remember how much that ring cost? The sapphire embedded in the ring is called The Sylph’s Coffin, and the price that was won at Pierpont’s auction house was a whopping…… Oh, truly sorry about this. Uh-hum. I’m really sorry about this. Since this person is the highest-ranking member of the Gett, it’s no wonder why money-related words keep getting mixed up in our conversations. It’s truly rude to a person you’re meeting for the first time. Please I humbly beg your forgiveness for our constant rudeness. The second tragedy of Amboia⁰ is that, even though Ozdin is one of the richest men in the world, his money can’t buy manners or common sense. The first tragedy of Amboia is that such a person is the only son of the highest member of the Gett, so there is no risk of him ever being cut off, regardless of his abilities.”

Vendel sighed, and continued in succession.

“But well, he’s really not a bad person. Of course, there were other reasons for saving Mr. Radan. Oh, that doesn’t mean he had an insidious heart or anything like that….. Oh no. Hmmm. Oh, we’ll talk about this later. For now, shall we take a moment to introduce ourselves? I told you my name, and the name of this monkey was given by his Lordship, so now we only have one name remaining.”

“Ozdin Gett. Call me Oz.”

Vendel quickly rolled his eyes.

“It’s just that we’re at such a quick pace here. Well, you can call me Oz if you would like.”

…… Radan’s reply was late, and Vendel waved both hands.

“Oh my, we are not such suspicious people. I’m not sure of your identity. Have you ever heard of the Gett merchant group? There’s a little lie that all items made on this continent are sold through the Gett merchants. Well, it’s not really that much of a lie. The real lie is that there’s nothing in God’s Kingdom that the Gett merchants can’t get. But actually, I’m not necessarily sure it is a lie….. Oh my, I’m sorry. I have a habit of not being able to stop talking when I’m nervous. Anyway, shall we listen to Mr. Radan now? Why did you fall into the river?”

Radan turned his head. Even though he covered his eyes, he could clearly distinguish the goosebumps that grew on his snowy white skin.

 “…..mmm, I don’t know…… this.”

“…… What? No, don’t you remember?”

Radan grabbed the blanket tightly.

His mind went blank. It was as if someone had taken the whole of his memory away.

“I don’t…… know.”

Why did I fall into the water……. and who I am?

“T,that…….”

Radan felt the blindfold on his eyes once more.

He felt as though he were nothing.

“… and so that’s how we found Mr. Radan.”

Ozdin and Vendel told the long story of how they came to save Radan.

It was said that there was a prophecy…

It was seven years ago, just after the start of the war between the Ibeden Empire, and the Five Kingdoms began, that a seer named Hadir came to the Gett merchant group.

“It was a prophecy without a conclusion. It was prophesied that in seven years, our Lord would meet a very important person. At that point, one would have thought that it was a vague fortune, like ‘you will meet with a wealthy person’ but it was actually quite specific.”

The prophecy clearly stated the date, location, and circumstances of Ozdin’s meeting with Radan. The name ‘Radan‘ was also given to him by the Prophet Hadir.

“It was a prophecy that could be taken as a joke……but well, our Lord here is a person who likes a bit of mischief, so we headed to the place of prophecy just in time.”

The place of prophecy was the Ebébu River. When they arrived, they had a difficult time because there were more than thirty bridges on the Ebébu River.

“To be precise, it’s thirty-seven. So we hired 37 people, but now that I think about it, we needed 74 people, not 37. Because we had to guard both ends of the bridge. So I Had to quickly hire thirty-seven more people.”

Ozdin laughed as though it were a funny story.

Vendel rolled his eyes at his smiling face.

“Truthfully, that speed wasn’t easy. Do you realize how challenging it was for me to find quarters for thirty-seven people, clothe them, and even calculate their daily allowances, much less seventy-four?”

“It doesn’t matter? That’s what I pay you for.”

“So, thinking that money solves everything is the problem!”

“Is there anything that money can’t do?”

“Of course! Very, very much so! I can give you over a hundred examples right now.”

Ozdin clapped his hand as if annoyed.

“It’s okay. You can only survive with money, and I am a man who has nothing but money.”

“Oh my, really. I’m glad you’re getting the point.”

Radan didn’t know, but the Gett merchants were not only the largest and richest merchants in the nation of Amboia across the sea but also one of the largest and wealthiest on the continent. Ozdin was one of the richest people on the continent.

“That’s our story. Mr. Radan’s story is……well, oh my, isn’t able to be told. I’m very sorry. So what do we do now? Mr. Radan, think about it……oh my, what was I thinking? What does one say to someone who has just woken up without their memories? So, is there anything you want to do or anything like that? For example, asking for an alchemist who could help you regain your memories?”

“……No.”

Radan shook his head.

Strangely, once the initial embarrassment dissipated, his heart was actually relieved.

There was nothing he wanted to remember either.

“Well, then we’ll just wait for your body to recover…… Oh, don’t worry about anything. The Inn fee and the money for the doctor will be borne by our generous Lord here. Don’t feel burdened, because he has so much money that he couldn’t spend it all in his lifetime. In fact, I’ve never seen him do any work for the good of it before, so I should rather thank Mr. Radan for creating such an opportunity. Then leave the fees to our generous Lord, Mr. Radan.”

Ozdin suddenly burst out.

“We must find the Prophet Hadir.”

“Um, what? No, why that all of a sudden.”

“It’s not all of a sudden. It was Hadir who did it. If Radan and I should meet, then I should find him.”

“Is that also a prophecy?”

“Maybe. And even if it wasn’t a prophecy, I would still have had to go find him.”

With his next words, he suddenly, and without warning, turned towards Radan.

“Would you like to take that blindfold off?”

“… …?”

Radan touched his eyes in embarrassment.

He forgot for a moment that he was wearing a blindfold.

The ease of wearing a blindfold was not at all unfamiliar.

“Well…… I don’t know.”

Radan wasn’t stuttering anymore.

His stuttering was something like a habit that stemmed from his lack of opportunity to speak. After meeting Leshak, his vocalizations were gradually improving. When he lost his memory, he also forgot his habit.

“I want to take it off.”

While Radan kept his mouth shut, not knowing what to say, Vendel jumped in.

“Oh, My Lord! Come on! What do you mean by saying something like that so directly?”

Ozdin was the type of person who didn’t listen to what he didn’t want to hear.

“I want to see your eyes. And I want to know who you are.”

“That…… why?”

“Because of the prophecy.”

Ozdin grinned at Radan.

“A prophecy is the foretelling of something that has already been decided. That means from birth, I was meant to meet you, to save you, and to wonder who you are. Isn’t this the kind of thing that’s said on the continent, that you’re led by fate?”

“There you go, My Lord. What is that talk? Isn’t that the kind of thing a man would say to a woman he fell in love with at first sight?”

“So, that’s why I’m saying it!”

“Excuse me, My Lord? Radan is a man. No, before that. Shouldn’t we first check with the Prophet Hadir to confirm that Mr. Radan is the correct person? He’s lost my memory, so he can’t verify his identity……”

It seemed that no matter what Vendel said, Ozdin wouldn’t hear it.

“And you, who I met by fate, I’m attracted to from head to toe. To be honest, I never thought that I would like a man, but seeing you now, I know. I haven’t seen your eyes yet, but I’m sure that they’ll definitely be to my taste. In short, I mean, you are my destiny.”

“Kik? Kiiik!”

Zorg tried to cover his ears as though he couldn’t listen to it anymore. Vendel’s reaction was not much different.

There was a sound of a hem being dragged to the floor.

Radan could not see, but Ozdin was sitting with one knee bent in the Amboia style.

“So, marry me.”

“Oh, come on! successor Lord! What do you mean, marriage!? You just met him……Oh no, before that, Radan is a man, a man!”

Vendel let out an exasperated breath. No matter how much he thought Ozdin lacked common sense or sanity, he never expected it to turn out like this.

“Kik, kiiik kiiik, kii!

Even Zorg shook his head and hit the bed with his tail.

These minor distractions were of no use.

He meant it when he said it was fate. Ozdin fell in love at first sight, without even knowing who Radan was.

It was as though it had been decided since birth.

Seeing Radan with his eyes closed for three days, he realized this fate.

When you open your eyes.

Then something will start.

Ozdin took Radan’s hand and brought it to his lips.

Perplexed, Radan shrugged his shoulders. The gesture was meant to pull his hand away.

Ozdin held his hand even tighter.

“It’s alright. Amboia is a place where there are no laws against marriage between men. It’s a very free place. Won’t you come with me?”

”… …”

Radan stopped pulling the hand that Ozdin held.

One recollection came to mind.

“Is Amboia far away?”

He thought that he should run away.

Far away, to a place from where he could never return. To a place where he couldn’t meet anyone by chance.

“It’s far away. It is a place only reached by ships, and the journey takes four months to travel.”

He didn’t know why the thought entered his mind. But a thought came to Radan. It was enough for him to remember that he had to get far, far away, quickly.

“…… I’ll go, then.”
