Chapter 68: Stalemate

The fortified city of Volzard, as its name suggests, is surrounded by a high, solid wall.

If it weren't for the wall, the city would have been swallowed by a tsunami of goblins and who knows how many people would have been killed.

The wall is now surrounded by a horde of dark green goblins, and the smell of blood and excited screams envelops the city.

The purpose of the goblins rushing in from the forest is to feed.

Perhaps they were pushed out of the woods afterwards, or perhaps they were lured by the scent of people drifting on the wind and approached Volzade.

But it is undoubtedly the smell of blood that is now attracting the goblins to Volzard.

When the goblins hit the walls, they try to climb into the city, but they are attacked by the garrison and adventurers who are waiting for them and fall one by one.

Wounded and fallen goblins are surrounded by the goblins below them and are turned into food for them.

When the wounded and weakened goblins are gone, the goblins are again dropped in an attempt to climb the wall and are eaten by their friends.

At the beginning, it seemed that you could fight off the goblins by repeating this process, but halfway through the game, things started to change.

The pressure coming in later on increased even more, and the goblins began trampling the corpses of their companions and trying to escape upwards.

A slope of carcasses began to form in front of the castle walls, and if the carcasses continued to accumulate, we were in danger of climbing over the walls.

We reached Volzard just as the slope of the corpses began to rise higher.

'Reinhardt, Basten, reap the carcasses at the wall!

Yes!

Soon the two metallic skeletons are on the verge of collapsing the pile of carcasses, but there's no end in sight as long as the pressure from behind continues.

'Zae and the others, cut up the goblins away from the city. If a feeding ground can be established away from the city, the pressure on us should weaken.

As you wish!

The five jet-black lizardmen dove into the shadows and went off into the middle of the goblin herd at once.

''Alts, attack from the perimeter of the herd that is not in contact with Volzard. Once you've killed a few in one place, move to another, triggering cannibalism and reducing their numbers.

Yes, master!

Even the pitch-black Kobolds took off for the outer perimeter of the dark green tsunami.

On top of the city walls, the garrison and adventurers continued their desperate attack in an attempt to hold off the surging goblins as much as possible, but where Reinhardt and the others had crumbled the pile of corpses, there was an air of relief that the impending crisis was over.

I moved under Donovan-san, who was in charge of the formation, in order to inform him of our movement and ask for instructions on how to proceed.

'Mr. Donovan, I'm back.

Kent, you, with all that blood in your veins!

Oh I've been stabbed by a Risenburg knight in disguise.

Is this a**h*le gonna be okay?

'Yes, my wounds are fine now, but it's going to take me a while to get there and my magic is going to run out.

''Well, well, in your case, you just need to get some rest as long as your subordinates are active.

"Yes, my family...

I told Mr. Donovan what Reinhardt and the others were doing, and he nodded widely.

'That's all well and good for now, it would have been a great help just to break up the slope of this corpse.

I mean, for now, is there anything else?

Yeah, what's happening now is the first stage of the outbreak.

So that means there's a next step, right?

Yes, those guys are going to start showing up...

Donovan pointed to a goblin devouring the carcasses of his friends, but it looked distinctly different from the goblins around him.

Its body has grown to about fifty percent larger, and it has turned a green color, almost black.

The adventurers on the castle walls also seemed to have noticed it and there was a stirring of excitement.

''Whoa.......what is that?''

"The top goblins, high goblins, goblin mages and giga goblins will come out of the woodwork.

The goblins that ate the corpses of their companions and ate their magical stones would turn into a higher-order species.

The second stage of the extreme outbreak is that this high level species will be generated in large numbers, and the goblins will even move in an organized manner.

How are you going to deal with this?

We don't deal with that right now.

What?

Speaking of which, the attacks from above the city walls had become sporadic at some point.

It seems that Reinhardt and the others have begun to push back the goblins below the city walls.

Both the members of the garrison and the called adventurers have stopped attacking and are taking turns resting.

''With the slope of the carcasses, we couldn't be this nonchalant if the higher species were to clump together in a pack, but as long as the walls remain high, we'll be fine.

Donovan-san said that the higher level species will continue to appear one after another after this, but the only way to stop them is to collect the dead magic stones, which is virtually impossible under the circumstances.

Even though it's a high level species, it's still a goblin, so it's not as dangerous as a rock ogre.

If there's a situation where there's a defense called a castle wall, it's more efficient to aim at the place where they've become a high-ranking species.

The carcasses of the goblins that had accumulated under the city walls were cleaved by Reinhardt and Basten and moved away from the city walls.

Perhaps it's the effect of Zae and the others rampaging through the herd, but the pressure pressing on Volzard seems to be weakening.

The goblins are rushing to the pile of carcasses, devouring them as if they were fighting over them.

These guys will eventually evolve into a higher species.

''It will still take some time for the higher species to increase and move to the second stage, you should rest while you can too.

Yes, I'll just go back to my classmates.

Back at the castle gates, my classmates moved toward the garrison's filling station a little further back to receive their soup and sandwiches.

It's a simple meal, but some of them are eating it with tears in their eyes.

Yes, the food at Rastok was really bad.

Some of my classmates eating were the boys I rescued earlier.

I mean, they don't all have slave braces, but I wonder if they're okay.

Well, it's tactless to put a damper on the air of rejoicing in the reunion, so let's keep quiet.

''Kokubun........''

Oh, thanks for the help earlier, Kondo.

I mean, are you sure it's okay? Before and after...

Yeah, my wounds are already healed, so I'm okay, I'm a little off guard.

I hope you're okay...

I mean, why were Kondo and the others on the walls?

'I appealed directly to the garrison and got permission to participate in the defense of the walls.

The boys who were working on the walls were instructed to go inside the walls and return to the garrison building when the alarm went off.

At that time, they were told that the rescue mission had been brought forward and that we were on our way to Volzard.

So he asked Kondo to take the lead in defending the city walls, and he was allowed to do so.

''Then why did you suddenly move the mission forward?

'Oh, that's...'

When I explained that I had hurriedly forced the operation because Furukan-sensei, who was suddenly energized by the effect of the gift, was suspected and was about to be tortured, Kondo also looked dumbfounded.

'We have no right to speak for others either, but Furukan-sensei.......'

Well, if we had tried to do it as planned, this outbreak of extreme weather would have postponed it, so it's all good.

'Well, that's true too...'

It was obvious that taking care of the number of goblins that filled the perimeter of the city was not going to be done in a day or two, and the situation might have changed in the meantime.

When I thought about it, it was quite hectic, but it was probably a good thing that we brought the mission forward.

As I was talking to Kondo, I saw Kurtz-san.

''Alright, temporary troops, assemble,''

Well, Kokubun, I'm going to go...

Yeah, good luck with that.

Kurtz-san gave me a horrified look when he saw me, so I made a big circle with both hands to show him that it was okay.

I don't think it's appropriate for me to be dressed with blood all over my back and stomach, so let's go change clothes.

I asked the garrison to use the bathroom in the quarters to wash off the blood and change into the clothes I had left in the shadow storage.

I finish my stomach with the soup and sandwiches the committee chairman saved for me, and while I'm at it, I'll dope up with pills that will help me recover my magic power.

Now, shall I join the front line?

''Kento, I'd like to help with the healing as well.

''Yes, Yuuka's healing magic is useful.......let's just say no to the doctor for a moment before we go.

Yes.

I decided to ask the garrison to join the activities of the garrison after I refused Sato-sensei because it would cause a commotion if the chairman left without saying anything.

When I asked the guard who was distributing the food, he told me where the front line base was.

The outpost we were told about was a building right beside the city wall, and inside were Klaus-san and Marianne-san and their wife with stern expressions on their faces.

''Klaus-san and Marianne-san, we have returned safely.

Hey, Kent. Thanks for coming back.

Welcome back, Mr. Kent.

My classmates will be looking after you again in the future, thank you.

The bouncy little bastards are doing well, so we don't have to worry about them.......................and the little girl?

'Yes, she's a classmate of mine who we rescued this time, but she can use some pretty powerful healing magic and wants to help heal.

I introduced the chairman of the committee to Klaus and the others and explained to the chairman that Klaus was the Lord of Volzard and Marianne was the general commander of the garrison.

''I'm Yuuka Asakawa, nice to meet you.

'Oh, it's a good thing that healing magic users are so valuable but how good are you at it?

Klaus and the others looked a little uneasy, so when I explained the chairman's struggles at the garrison in Rastock, they both agreed with me.

Marianne walked up to the chairman and gave him a compassionate hug.

''You've been through a lot of hard times all of a sudden but if you're here in Volzard, you'll be fine.

'Yes, thank you, it was a struggle, but Kenjin was always there for me...'

When the chairman turned his gaze to me and dyed his cheeks, Klaus-san became sullen at once and Marianne-san smiled meaningfully.

Huh, where did the congenial and harmonious air we had just had until a moment ago go...?

'Now, Kent, if you come back safely, I'll have you working like a carriage horse to protect Volzard, where your people are going to live.

'Don't make any mistake, my dear. For Mr. Kent, it's a fight to protect Volzard, who will live here for a long time.

Hearing Marianne's words, the chairperson's eyes seemed to hang up a bit this time.

''Kento, do you plan to remain in this world?''

What? I mean, that's....I'm still considering it, I guess....

Hmm but I thought your parents were on board with that.

Well.........to stay behind, you mean in terms of.......strength?

As soon as I started to lose my color, the moment my flagging started to go down, I was so annoyed that my bad-ass old man started grinning at me.

''Kent-san, I know there are a lot of.......issues that need to be resolved, but for now, can you focus on getting through this phase?''

'Yes, yes, of course! So, then, I'll be under Donovan-san's command, so please take care of Yuuka.

Oh, Kenjin...

The Commissioner seemed to want to say something, but he bowed deeply and headed up the ramparts like a de-rabbit.

Once up on the ramparts, Reinhardt and Basten were pushing the goblins' carcasses back further into the forest, perhaps considering the situation.

The number of goblins pushing out of the forest appeared to be noticeably reduced, probably due to the fact that Zae and the others had rampaged through the herd.

The garrison and adventurers stationed on the ramparts seemed to be keeping an eye on the situation.

Normally, adventurers of C rank and above are called out, but this time, because of the extreme outbreak, even volunteers from D rank are joining in.

That's probably why there are many young adventurers, and perhaps Giliq is somewhere in there too.

''Donovan-san, please let me help you.

Hmph, I'm not going to help you, I'm relying on your family to help me.

When I called out to him, Mr. Donovan's cheeks loosened and he showed me his cheeks.

It's the kind of smile that a small child would have snickered at, but you can sense that the situation is improving and there is room for improvement.

'How's the situation?'

''Yes, the higher-ranking species are becoming more and more prominent, and some of them seem to be leading the goblins, but I'm sure they'll be fine now that they've cleared out so much of what's under the city walls.

Small pieces of flesh and such have fallen off, but the large chunks of corpses have been pushed away from the city walls to about 50 meters away.

Certainly, this would allow the original performance of the city wall to be demonstrated, and it wouldn't be easy to get over with goblins.

However, Reinhardt and Basten, who were cleaving the carcasses, are covered in blood splatters and pieces of flesh and have a terrific appearance.

''Um........Donovan-san....

What?

'May I go and bathe my skeleton?

That's fine. It's going to be a stalemate for a while now.

Then can I give the rest of my household a break?

'Well, you have a long way to go, so be it.

As I flew Malt to the messenger, Reinhardt and Basten disappeared into the shadows.

When they disappeared, the goblins didn't come rushing in, but seemed intent on devouring the carcasses of their friends in a pile.

After observing them, Mr. Donovan gathered the adventurers together.

'All right, all of you, listen up. The goblins are so busy with their bellies that they won't move for a while. But even if they don't move, they are still hungry. And when they've devoured all their dead friends, they'll be moving again. The next target ... needless to say?

The faces of the adventurers, which had been loose while they were resting, now look severely tightened.

The next target for the goblins who had devoured the corpses was undoubtedly the city of Volzard.

If the goblins are not able to protect themselves, they might be eaten as well, then everyone has a desperate look on their faces.

The next time they push out, the higher-ranked species will undoubtedly gather their underlings and make an organized move. But that's an opportunity for us.

Mr. Donovan broke off and gave a tremendous smile.

''A tacked-on organization is easily torn down once the head is gone. In other words ... the next thing we'll be after is a higher species.

Donovan says that even if the higher-ranking species were to organize, they would only be able to carry out a pincer attack, and it would be easier to aim for the head and crush the chaos as it comes together.

However, the sun will eventually set. "But it will get dark soon, so be careful of that. He who is in charge of the surveillance should use his ears as well as his eyes to look for signs of life. Don't let him get distracted by your nonsense!

It seemed unlikely that they would attack during the night in terms of timing, but if they did, the night-sighted demon side might have the upper hand.

After Donovan's instruction, the adventurers returned to their waiting positions at their assigned locations.

''Um, Donovan-san, where should I stay?''

You're going to stay close to me, or I won't be able to tell you what to do.

'Um ... is it okay if I go and let you know that I'm safely back at the boarding house?

Yeah, well, that's okay, because it's not going to happen yet anyway.

Excuse me. I'll be back in a minute.

I said no to Mr. Donovan and ducked into the shadows and returned to the lodge at once.

Amanda closed the door tightly and sat across from Meisa at the table in the shop.

'Miss Amanda, Maysa, I'm home.'

Oh, Kent, I'm so glad you're okay, I was already worried.

Huh........Meisa?

Amanda gave me a smile of heartfelt relief, and Meisa came rushing in like a rocket.

I felt sorry for worrying her as she silently clung to me.

''I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you...''

Stupid Kent ... stupid ...

The situation changed so quickly that we had to move the rescue mission forward, but we managed to get them all back to Volzard safely.

Well that's great Kent, you've done well...

Amanda....

Amanda praised me as she hugged me and praised me for the whole Maysa.

'Mugu ... oh, mom ... it's painful ...'

'Oh, sorry, sorry... so, Kent, how's it going out there? It's very rare that the alert isn't lifted for this long.

'Yes, Volzard is under siege by a horde of goblins.

'What? Well then.....

''It's okay, we got pushed in for a while, but we're pushing back with Reinhardt and the others. However, there are an unusually large number of them, so I think it will take a little longer.

I was unsure, but I thought it was better than telling a strange lie and told them about Volzard's current situation, but after all, both Amanda-san and Maysa-chan looked worried.

'Kent are you sure you're okay?'

Of course you won't have to worry about it. I'll have Murt as soon as I get back, Murt.

Wow, you're watching him, master.

They were relieved when Moult showed his face.

I'm sure Murt doesn't mind goblins, even though they look like this, so I'll be sure to protect them properly.

Fluffy ... can I hold her?

Yeah, okay Murt, take care of them both.

I'll take care of it, master!

Maisa is hugging Moult, her face prodigal.

"So, Kent, what are you going to do now?

I will have all of the tribesmen working at Mr. Donovan's place with instructions.

So you're going to the city walls then?

Yes, I'm still a B-ranked adventurer, after all.

Be careful ... and protect Volzard.

'Yes, I'll take care of it! I'm off!

I said cheerfully and left the boarding house to dispel their fears.

I'll protect them, they're both very important to me, they're like my family, and Volzard is already my city.
