Chapter 38 – Freedom

Yu Tang was munching on a piece of pig’s trotter.

At first, she started with using chopsticks, but later found that her chopsticks weren’t of much use as it would drop from her chopsticks time and time again. Furthermore, the people next to her were all holding it in their hands, happily gnawing away. She sneakily looked around and found that the people were all drinking and chatting away, so no one would pay attention to her, a young girl who was following along with her father and brother having her meal, so she felt reassured and quietly put down her chopsticks and used her hands instead.

With the help of her hands, the pig’s trotters were eaten cleanly by her.

Pei Yan looked at Yu Tang’s hands.

Yu Tang’s hands were beautiful. Fair and delicate, long and slender fingers, if it was increased in size it would be too plump, reduced in size, it would be too thin. Her current size was perfect, without a single flaw.

But this time, this pair of beautiful hands was covered with a layer of red chili powder and oil, reflecting the light.

Like a pearl that turns to dust, or an alabaster jade reduced to ashes, no matter who sees it, they would only feel uncomfortable.

Pei Yan did not realize that he was starting to glare at Yu Tang.

Yu Tang was contentedly munching on the pig’s trotters when she felt a strong gaze as if burning a hole in her.

When she looked up, she saw PeiYan’s cold expression that held a simmering anger.

Yu Tang was dumbfounded.

Why was he looking at her like that?

She hadn’t done anything to offend him at all!

Could it be because of her improper dining etiquette?

Or was it her inappropriate dressing?

Yu Tang looked down and examined herself.

She was horrified to find a drop of oil on the front lapel of her robe.

How could this happen?

Yutang felt a little panicked.

She held up the pig’s trotter and looked towards Pei Yan, thinking that she should explain herself to him with a few words.

But before she could say anything, Pei Yan lightly shifted his gaze away.

Yu Tang blinked her eyes.

Pei Yan, was he showing his disdain of her?

Yu Tang felt very aggrieved.

There will always be situations where people would make mistakes …… she hasn’t eaten a proper meal for the whole day, so upon seeing such delicious food, how could she restrain herself as if she didn’t see the food? Moreover, this was the night market, when people come to the night market to eat, was it not about enjoying unabashedly?

The food that she was amazed at just now, suddenly made her feel like she was chewing on wax.

Sigh…

She already knew that this third master of the Pei family had mistakenly formed a terrible impression of her due to their previous encounters. Every time they met, nothing good resulted from it, let’s not even mention her so-called image in front of him – clearly there was none!

Yu Tang was feeling sorry for herself when Pei Yan suddenly turned to her with a frown. He took out a handkerchief from his sleeve and threw it in front of her, saying coldly, “Wipe.”

She froze.

Yu Yuan, who was pouring the wine, and Yu Wen and Zhou ZiJin, who were drinking, all looked over at her when they heard this.

Yu Wen and Zhou ZiJin laughed, and Yu Wen even pointed at the corner of Yu Tang’s mouth, saying, “There’s a little scallion over there.”

Yu Tang’s eyes widened in shock and anger. “Father, how can you be like this?”

Yu Wen was puzzled at her words and said, “What’s wrong with what I said?” He said as he continued pointing his hand at the corner of her mouth, indicating for Yu Tang to quickly wipe her mouth clean.

There were so many outsiders around now – couldn’t he have told her about this privately?

Yu Tang huffed in annoyance, feeling that the handkerchief Pei Yan threw in front of her was just an eyesore, not to mention her using it, even looking at it made her feel uncomfortable.

She took out her own handkerchief and wiped the corner of her mouth fiercely, and then wiped her hands, all the while, she purposely left that white handkerchief on the table.

Pei Yan let out a sigh of relief as his mood improved.

Yu Wen and Zhou ZiJin chuckled a few times and didn’t bother about this matter anymore, as they continued to drink their wine and chat, while Yu Yuan, who was holding the wine jug next to them, listened interestedly with a smile.

Yu Tang shot a sidelong glance at Pei Yan and heavily bit into a pig’s trotter.

Pei Yan’s gaze then fell on her front lapel.

The corners of Yu Tang’s mouth twitched.

Couldn’t he just stop?

Wasn’t a gentleman someone who would close one eye when others commit minor misdemeanors? Couldn’t he just pretend not to notice? Feign his ignorance?

Yutang was boiling internally with anger so much so that she wanted to stomp her feet.

She already knew that he was a narrow-minded, fault-finding and petty person. Not mentioning anything else, just the fact that they had met several times, but when had he ever showed a smile to her?

And always being so self-righteous.

The first time he saw her, he assumed she was a conniving fraudster; the second time, he assumed she was a liar, the third time, he assumed she was a manipulative seductress…… thinking of all these things, Yutang feel like a deflated rubber ball that was pierced by a needle.

Anyway, she clearly wasn’t of any good in in his mind.

In actuality, their statuses were so different; so even if she wasn’t a good person, what has it got to do with him?

As YuTang thought of this, she immediately cheered up.

Why should she be so worried, it was only just a coincidence that during this period, she ran into PeiYan more times than before. In her previous life when she lived in Lin’an City for over twenty years, she had never met PeiYan.

From this, it’s clear that without PeiYan, she can also live her life well.

So why should it matter how Pei Yan sees her, or what he thinks of her?

Why should she waste her emotions on a person with whom she will not have anymore encounters with?

Yu Tang felt that she had it all figured out.

She took a deep breath and started munching on the pig’s trotters again.

Third Lady Guan’s food was so delicious!

If anyone ever brings up this topic next time, she would tell them that Third Lady Guan had amazingly good pig’s trotters in addition to their grilled fish, and of course, their stir-fried noodles were also equally as good.

Yu Tang finally went back to her previous joyfulness and open-mindedness.

Pei Yan’s eyes however, were glaring so hard at her.

This young lady was really heartless, acknowledging his words without understanding its deeper meaning.

She ate until her hands were full of oil, where has her image of being a proper young lady gone off to?

However, after Yu Tang let go of the burden in her heart, she didn’t feel any guilt.

She not only gnawed on the pig’s trotters with her hands, but even stood along the roadside stalls eating the fermented rice with rice balls, walking the streets while eating sugar paintings, tried a bit of donkey meat…… as for Pei Yan…. hmph, he could stare daggers at her for all she cares! She wasn’t part of the Pei family, nor was she a subordinate of his, that needed to take into account his feelings before she acted.

This night, she was happier than ever before.

This should be the happiness of having both parents, right?

Yu Tang thought joyfully as she supported her slightly drunken father back to the inn.

After this trip out and back to Lin’an, it should be difficult for her to go out again, let alone follow her father and play like this.

In the future, it would be difficult to enjoy such happy times.

Yu Tang, her father and brother slowly walked along Little river Imperial Street as the evening breeze blew across her face bringing with it the coolness of early autumn, making the people who had just spent a long hot summer feel more refreshed.

However, just when you’re at the pinnacle of happiness, therein lies tragedy.

Yu Tang returned to the inn and freshened up before laying down to sleep. However, not long after, she began to experience pain in her stomach.

Her heart thumped uneasily, the scene of PeiYan sitting like white snow in the fiery bustling night market stall came to mind.

Could it be that she had eaten until her stomach hurt?

Yu Tang covered her stomach, which was hurting more and more, and immediately went to knock on Yu Yuan’s door.

Yu Yuan quickly put on his outer clothes and went to find her a physician.

Yu Wen’s tipsiness was cleared away immediately in his shock and worry.

However, it was already so late into the night, and they were also visitors in HangZhou, so how could they find a physician so easily?

Yu Wen had no choice but to knock on the door of the Pei family’s pawnshop.

The person in charge of the Pei family pawnshop was Supervisor Tong’s brother, Second Supervisor Tong.

He and Yu Wen had known each other previously. After hearing what had happened, he immediately went to find a namecard with Pei Yan’s name that had been placed in the store in case of emergencies and said, “Imperial physician Wang Bo so happens to be in Hangzhou, I’ll ask him to come over and give Lady Yu a look.”

Yu Wen thanked him profusely and slipped on his shoes and left with the second supervisor Tong.

However, Yu Tang only covered her face with her blanket in embarrassment.

The name card of third master Pei …… then he will definitely know of this tomorrow!

Yu Tang felt that she was really too ashamed to meet anyone right now.
