Chapter 63 – Denial

As Yu Tang looked on, she couldn’t help but shake her head silently in her heart.

Li Jun, however, did not see Yutang.

These days, he felt as if he was in a bad dream.

Yu Tang’s family wanted her to marry the second son of the Wei Family, so the kept fugitives in their family killed him. As the Yu family refused to let her marry into their family, his mother had people kidnap Lady Yu. Later, those fugitives approached his brother to extort silver, so his brother plotted to put those fugitives to death.

When did his family become so obsessed with him marrying the daughter of the Yu Family?

When did his mother become so desperate and resort to unscrupulous means in order to achieve her goals?

When did his brother become so arrogant that he would even disregard the laws of their country?

Was it because he had caused a commotion at home because he wanted to marry Lady Yu?

However, he had also previously fought against going to school, but both his mother and brother didn’t indulge him like what they did this time.

Even he, the person in question, was not as insistent as his mother about marrying YuTang.

He tried to persuade his mother, but not only did she not feel she did anything wrong, but even said resentfully that it was because his father’s position in court was not powerful enough, otherwise the officials wouldn’t have dared to intervene.

Upset, he went to his brother, but was berated instead. His brother said that he should be old enough to know better and stop being so naïve. Each man for himself; if their family did not use the fugitives, someone else would obtain the benefits instead.

He was completely confused.

In any case, their Li family owned that farmland, and it was their family who illegally sheltered those fugitives. When the officials went to investigate the incident, it happened in their family’s farmland, so how can his elder brother say such words now to evade responsibility?

The Pei family’s third head steward Hu Xing visited them, saying that the Yu family invited third master Pei to be the arbitrator to settle the grievances between both their families. He was ashamed to face the Yu Family, but his brother forced him to come along. His brother and father also spoke with the other invited witnesses, saying that those fugitives had nothing to do with their family and the kidnapping of Lady Yu was nonsense and completely fabricated. They vehemently denied all the things they had done.

Shouldn’t his family be actively cooperating with the Pei family to give the people of Lin’an City an explanation instead?

His modest and gentle mother was gone, along with his kind and upright elder brother ……

And they, were they really just doing all of this just to secure the marriage?

Li Jun did not know how he walked into the Pei family’s residence with his brother, or how he came to sit in the Pei family’s hall. It was the fierce and heated arguments he heard that brought him back to his senses.

While he was in a state of confusion, the Li family and the Yu family had already been arguing for some time.

Throughout the proceeding, Third master Pei sat in the main seat with a somewhat indifferent expression, as if the dispute happening in front of him had nothing to do with him.

What exactly was Third Master Pei thinking?

Li Jun could not help but look towards his brother Li Duan.

Li Duan still viewed this matter as important.

He wore a newly made blue robe with gold embroidery, which made his skin seem fairer and delicate. His appearance was as refined as a jade, and clearly stood out among the rest.

His current expression was cold as the autumn wind, and he said calmly. “Master Yu, words are futile, you have to provide the evidence. If there aren’t any, I will have to sue you for slander!”

Li Jun shuddered at his words.

The Yu family was not reckless, so how would they dare to ask Third Master Pei to act as an intermediary without any evidence? Third Master Pei was not a fool either, so if there wasn’t any evidence, why would he bother to take on this case?

Li Jun’s mind regained clarity.

He looked toward Yu Wen.

He saw that Yu Wen was so furious that his face turned red. Hearing what Li Duan said, he bowed toward third master Pei and the several invited witnesses and instructed Yu Yuan coolly. “Bring the criminals.”

Yu Yuan assented and retreated.

The hall was filled with low murmurs.

Yu Tang was deeply infuriated.

The Li family had always been like this.

Even when they were pushed into the corner, they can still dismiss evidence as if it was nothing, and treat everyone as if they were all blind. When things become worse, they will then shift the blame onto others, saying that they were ignorant and victims themselves.

In her previous life, she had lost count of the times they have acted in such a manner.

However, in this life, she will by no means let them continue to have their way.

She quickly glanced towards Pei Yan.

Pei Yan, who had been watching Yu Tang from the side, wanted to laugh a little.

He knew that she would not be contented to quietly remain at home.

The moment she walked in behind her cousin with her head lowered and dressed as a male attendant, he spotted her immediately. Whoever that could enter this hall, which of them aren’t an important person related to this case? To bring merely an attendant to this hall, it was only because the Yu Family weren’t concerned with status divide, and the onlookers were mostly curious about him who was presiding over this matter for the first time, and thus did not pay any attention to her. Otherwise, she would have been found out the very moment she walked into this hall.

However, as long as he keeps silent, even if she was discovered, it would not be a problem. When others see that he didn’t make mention of it, they too will just pretend as if they didn’t notice.

But even so, this young lady of the Yu family still surprised him a little.

Right from the start until now, she did not even spare a glance towards the second son of the Li family. When she looked at Li Duan, her gaze was akin to a fire that was intent on burning him to a crisp.

Pei Yan stroked his chin.

Did Lady Yu intend to take revenge on Li Duan?

He drank some tea.

After that, he saw Yu Tang whispering a few words to Yu Yuan, who nodded and went up to whisper a few words to Yu Wen, who was previously rendered speechless by Li Duan. He immediately took over and began to refute Li Duan.

After a while, Yu Wen was on the losing end again.

On their side, it was replaced by Wei Xiaoyuan who was arguing with Li Duan.

Li Duan was indeed worthy of being the son-in-law of the Gu family. Not only can he debate well, but he also had the talent to push the opponent into a corner. Again, after a few exchanges, he made Wei Xiaoyuan unable to continue.

Li Duan stood in the middle of the hall with his hands held behind his back, his face was slightly flushed from speaking and he looked at his surroundings with pride.

Yu Tang whispered to Yu Yuan a few words, and Yu Yuan came forward and argued with Li Duan again.

Pei Yan was a little concerned for the people on the side of the Yu family.

How can several adult men be less capable of arguing than a young lady?

No wonder the Yu family was only living on the earnings from their family’s ancestral assets all these years!

If this Lady Yu can represent the Yu family side and confront Li Duan, it would be much more interesting.

Pei Yan suddenly lost interest.

He placed the tea cup on the table.

The hall was suddenly silent, and the eyes of all the people turned towards him in unison.

Pei Yan ignored them and said to Pei Man, who was standing behind him, “The tea has gotten cold, so let the attendants change the tea for everyone.”

The crowd who thought he had something to say: ……………..

PeiYan’s attitude is simply too nonchalant!

The Li family’s mood became better, but the faces of Yu Wen and the others turned gloomy, and those witnesses who came to listen were all uncertain, pondering in their hearts where they should stand in this case.

Yu Tang’s gaze sliced straight into Pei Yan like a knife.

How can he take such an attitude?

It’s one thing if he had not agreed to preside over this case, but once he had agreed, he should take this seriously, be fair and impartial in handling of this matter. How can he be so cavalier about this?

Is this also another person whom she had formed a mistaken impression of due to her previous life’s experiences?
