Chapter 7: Medical Treatment

This painting, “Pine Creek Fishing Hidden lake” was done by Li Tang of the previous dynasty, and is a famous antique painting.

As such, Lu Xin asking for two hundred taels of silver, was not considered to be expensive.

Besides, Yu Wen liked it very much, and Lu Xin looked like he was in trouble at this time. As Lu Xin’s friend, Yu Wen should buy the painting for the sake of friendship and also for his own benefit.

However, in the last two days, his daughter Yu Tang made known to him about their family’s savings.

If he bought the painting, he would not have enough silver to pay for his wife’s treatment.

His likes and interests were not as important as treating his wife’s illness.

Although Yu Wen was mild-mannered and rather weak-willed, he was clear about where his priorities lay.

“Brother Lu,” his face turned red, “I am sorry about this. As you know, our family’s store was burnt, so I can’t get that much silver now ……”

He turned to take the painting he previously kept and returned it to Lu Xin, “See if anyone else likes it …… “

Lu Xin did not believe his words and said incredulously. “You have a good family inheritance, and don’t have much responsibilities. How can you not afford to take out 200 taels of silver?”

Yu Wen became even more ashamed, said: “but I also have to keep some silver for my wife’s medical bills.”

Lu Xin was not pleased.

But Yu Wen wouldn’t budge, saying, “I’m sorry, brother!” and he made a low bow.

Lu Xin was still insistent and said, “Don’t you still have a hundred acres of good land?”

In Lin’an, there were many hills but very few were fields. In any other province, a hundred mu of good land was worth five or six hundred taels of silver, but in Lin’an, it is worth at least a thousand taels of silver.

Yu Wen murmured, “I don’t even have enough money now to pay for my wife’s medical treatment. I would likely have to sell off those land too. I cannot indulge in my personal interests and neglect my wife’s illness.”

Lu Xin wanted to continue, but Yu Tang, who heard the news rushed over, pushing the door and came in. She said with a smile, “If Uncle Lu is urgently needing silver, why not pawn the painting for the time being, and then buy it back later when things are better? The Pei family’s pawnshop is still very fair.”

In her previous life, that was what she did. Although the price was very low, but compared to other pawnshops, it was already considered a good rate.

Lu Xin felt a loss of face, and his face darkened as he said to Yu Wen: “Although Yu Family is small, but at least you are a learned person. It’s better for young ladies to stay at home and properly learn embroidery instead!”

Yu Wen was conflicted.

Yu Tang sneered in her heart. She widened her big almond eyes in innocence and said “Uncle Lu’s words are not correct. I often help my father pawn things at the pawn store too.”

Yu Wen wanted to say something but hesitated.

He could see that his daughter was afraid that he would give the silver to Lu Xin.

From this, he could see the fear and worry she had and how little faith she had in him.

Yu Wen was a little sad, but then he thought it was also better this way. Lu Xin would not blame him for not helping him when he saw him in trouble.

Lu Xin left in a rage.

Yu Tong was very happy and told her mother Madam Chen: “Look, father has offended Uncle Lu for your sake, when father arrives, you should comfort him a little.”

Madam Chen’s eyes moistened at her words, and she went to the room to thank Yu Wen.

Early the next morning, Yu Tang and her mother went with Yu Wen to see off Yu Bo and Yu Yuan with their prepared foodstuffs for the long journey.

Yu Bo urged Yu Wen, “Don’t worry about the store while I’m gone; I’ll take care of it when I get back.”

Yu Wen nodded his head repeatedly.

However, after sending Yu Bo away, he was still very worried, so he went to visit several families in similar situations as theirs. When he returned in the evening, he couldn’t help but sigh and remarked to his wife and daughter, “Everyone is waiting for the Pei family’s decision.”

“There are two families who want to sell their land in Changxing street and return to cultivating the fields in the countryside. At this time, besides the Pei family, who will want to buy? It’s also uncertain when the Pei family’s internal issues will be concluded.”

Yu Tang was very curious about the Pei family and said, “Is the Pei family really quarreling as Uncle Lu said?”

“It should be your uncle Lu exaggerating.” Yu Wen said, “The Pei family is a family of educated people who understand logic and reason, how could they bicker like housewives? At most, it was just a few words of argument between brothers. Besides, the Pei family’s grand elder is still alive, and in the end, it’s up to him to decide what to do.”

However, the Pei family’s grand elder may not have long to live.

As Yu Tang thought this in her heart, Lu Xin visited them again.

She was a little annoyed, and insisted on following her father to the study.

However, this time Lu Xin came not to sell his paintings, but to bring the Yu family a piece of good news: “Wang Bo also came here from Putuo Mountain!”

Yu Wen was surprised and overjoyed..

Lu Xin said enviously, “The Pei family’s power can’t be denied! What retirement – the Pei family only had to send a letter over and they still hurriedly came to Lin’an. “

Yu Wen said: “You can’t say that. The Pei family’s grand elder is a good man. Now that he is sick, Yang imperial physician or Wang imperial physician, if you can help, why not?”

“Humph!” Lu Xin disagreed and said, “No one is so kind!”

Yu Wen smiled wryly.

Lu Xin said, “I’ve already made arrangements. First thing tomorrow morning, we will go to the Pei residence and see the grand elder, and ask him to intervene on our behalf to request for either Yang Imperial physician or Wang Imperial physician to take a look at sister-in-law’s illness.”

No need to mention Yu Wen, just Yu Tang was already ecstatic.

Yu Tang even felt a bit guilty.

Even though Lu Xin’s character was poor, but he still treated her father well. Just for this, Yu Tang was willing to overlook his faults. The next time he comes over to eat and drink, she will pretend not to see.

Yu Wen thanked Lu Xin again and again and said, “No matter whether my wife’s illness can be cured or not, you are my great benefactor.”

Lu Xin was not polite and said, “Of course! You and I are close friends! I will definitely take your matter to heart. It’s just that my ability is limited, so I can’t help you much.”

“Brother, don’t say that about yourself!” Yu Wen and Lu Xin politely exchanged a few words. Yu Wen called Ah Cam to book a table at the restaurant, and instructed old aunty Chen to get the wine.

“Take a good case of good wine!” Yu Tang said with a smile, and took her own silver tael and gave it to old aunty Chen, “Uncle Lu had been a great help.”

Old aunty Chen went away with a smile.

That night, Lu Xin got drunk at Yu’s house again. The good thing is that he didn’t forget about going to the Pei’s residence the next day with Yu Wen. He got up early in the morning, freshened up, ate a bowl of mixed noodles with scallion oil and drank two bowls of soy milk at Yu’s house, and went out with Yu Wen.

Yu Tang was restlessly waiting at home.

In the afternoon, Lu Xin and Yu Wen carried two separate medicinal boxes, and carefully accompanied two stranger into the house. The one walking beside Yu Wen was taller, with grey and white hair and a beard, and looked at least sixty years old, with a solemn and strong look. Beside Lu Xin was a pale clean shaven man, chubby and smiling, with perspiration on his face, who looked like an amicable person.

Yu Wen signaled to Yu Tang, with his eyes, telling her to return to her room.

Yu Tang went back but was still uneasy, so she sent Shuang Tao to listen in.

It took almost two hours for Shuang Tao to come back, but when she did, her face was lit aglow, which gave Yu Tang immeasurable hope.

“Eldest Miss.” Shuangtao did not disappoint as the first thing she said was good news. “The Pei family’s grand elder really is a charitable person, his own illness had not been cured but yet he like the physician come to our house to see Madam’s illness. Furthermore, both physicians came! Imperial physician Yang and imperial physician Wang. Both physicians checked the pulse of Madam, saying that it was a illness caused by childbearing. Instead of taking her daily medicine, it would be more effective instead, if she were to relax and not over exert herself and properly take care of her health. Yang imperial physician also gave a prescription for Madam, for her to make into a pill and eat it everyday, and assured Master that she will recover. Master was so happy! He even wanted to give the two imperial physicians a longevity plaque!”

Unexpectedly, the Pei family’s grand elder let both imperial physicians come over.

“Amitabha Buddha!” Yu Tang couldn’t help but put her hands together and recite, and her heart was infinitely grateful to the Pei family.

Regardless of the Pei family’s actions, it was true that the Pei family’s grand elder had saved her mother’s life, and saved their family.

Yu Tang remembered that the Pei family’s old master death was around this time, and suddenly her heart became anxious.

Should she send a letter to the Pei family or give a warning?

Maybe the Pei family’s grand elder escaped disaster this time?

But how can she report to the Pei family or give a warning without being suspected of being crazy? Yu Tang’s mind was in turmoil, and she didn’t have a clue how to proceed.

Her heart moved her to act and she unconsciously went to Yu Wen’s study, and coincidentally saw Yu Wen sending Lu Xin and the two imperial physicians out.

“You still have a patient at home, so you don’t have to bother with these niceties.” The chubby, pale kind-hearted one curved his eyes and chuckled, “The Pei family’s grand elder is still waiting for us to report on this matter!”

The other one with white hair nodded coldly towards Yu Wen and said, “We came here because of the Pei family, so if you want to thank us, just thank the Pei family.”

Yu Wen was very humble and said, “Of course it’s a must to go to the Pei family’s grand elder’s resident to show my gratitude. However, I also need to thank you both miracle physicians.”

Only a few words of gratitude, but the white-haired bearded man already showed his impatience.

Lu Xin said hurriedly: “Yu wen, you take care of sister-in-law at home, I will send the two imperial physicians back to Pei House on your behalf.”

Yu Wen agreed, and quietly slipped a few pieces of silver to Lu Xin, and only then sent the three of them out.

Yu Tang immediately scurried out. She said to her father, “Now Mother can be saved. How did you beg the Pei family’s grand elder?”

Yu Wen smiled and said, “I have to thank your Uncle Lu for this. He persuaded the Pei family’s Head steward who reported this matter to the grand elder. who was so compassionate that he immediately sent two imperial physicians to see your mother. I didn’t even see the Pei family’s grand elder.” Speaking of this, he touched Yu Tang’s dark and shiny hair, “This kindness, you must remember!”

Yu Tang promised and asked about the Pei family’s grand elder’s illness, “Do you know what illness he has?”

Yu Wen said, “I heard it is depression of the heart. It may be he couldn’t deal with the loss of his son, the old eldest master, and couldn’t accept the news of his death.”

If so, how then did he die in the previous life?

Could there have been another reason?

Yu Tang thought of the Pei family patriarchal dispute mentioned by Lu Xin earlier and was distressed, but she didn’t have the power to stop what had happened in her previous life.

What should she do?

Just when Yu Tang was conflicted, she suddenly found out that her father had sold the family’s ancestral twenty acres of good land, just like he had in his previous life.

“What did you do with the silver?” She asked, extremely upset.

She couldn’t think of a way to help the Pei family’s grand elder and now her father had created yet another mess. She couldn’t help but be a little angry, and her words were not polite. “I have said again and again, that we cannot sell our family’s fields so casually! Now that mother’s illness is settled and the family shop has no more income, even if the land is to be sold, it should be sold gradually for mother’s medicine!”

Yang Douxing’s new prescription included ginseng, which was a rare commodity and was a considerable expense for a family like their Yu’s.
