Chapter 10

The old man sat on a rocking chair upon the front porch of a rather large house that hung the sign 'Village Hall.' Though old, he looked quite healthy for his age and wore a sun hat which shadowed his gray eyes. Dressed in what was akin to a suit, he was more impeccable than any village elder she had seen. Players walked past the parameter of the place, and he glanced with steady eyes as if admiring the commotion of the travelers.

Lucy thought it was a rather nice thing to finally meet an NPC she didn't have to chase, wrestle, or climb for. She approached the man, golden feather in hand, satisfied at finally putting Dafy the Duck behind her.

"Hello village elder," She said.

He smiled at her approach.

"Hello, traveler. Did you come here to chit-chat with this old man?" The man asked.

Lucy almost scoffed. Why would she want to spend her time chatting with a npc in a game? What nonsense. She presented him the feather.

"I'm afraid not." She smiled because smiling never killed anyone. "I've just finished helping Dafy find his lost chicks. Color me surprised when I found out that a goblin scout had stolen them."

"Oh there. . ." The elder took the feather and looked at it. "Indeed. It must be concerning if Dafy gave you his feather. Hmm, young traveler, why don't you take a look and help around the town while I contemplate our next course of action?"

The man handed the feather back to her.

[Starter Quest 'Baby Steps' completed!]
{Rewards: Dafy's Golden Feather}

"Of course," She said, finally glad to be free of the quest-chain.

She walked away from the man and left him to his devices to find herself a shade to stop under. Then, she quickly glanced at the item she had been given.

[Dafy's Golden Feather]
—the first time this accessory is equipped, a random modifier is generated and bonded to your character.

She quickly wished for it to be equipped, taking over one of her 3 accessory slots as the feather clipped onto her dark-blue hair, gleaming under the sun like a brooch.

She checked it again.

[Dafy's Golden Feather]
—a gift from a duck for thanks.
*Character bonded.
*The probability for any chance affects to trigger is increased by 10% when this item is equipped.

It was an interesting modifier, Lucy thought. In the current stage where she had no skill or equipment that had chances attached, it was useless. Yet, it would be useful in the future. If there was a skill that had a 10% chance to cause burns, that rate would jump to 20% with the feather equipped. Essentially, it was an accessory that showed its strength the stronger you became.

She was elated. Now she had two pieces of actual equipment on her person. The Cracked Bronze Short-Sword and, now, Dafy's Golden Feather. In the end, for a starting quest-chain, it hadn't been bad at all.

"Alright!" Her fist shot into the air. "Time to game seriously!"

Then a voice came from behind her. "I thought I told you not to block my inn's doorway?"

She turned to see a familiar red-headed innkeeper, tall and lanky, sighing.

"Oh—oops," She said, "Sorry sorry."

He smiled faintly, crimson eyes on her person.

"There's no problem. Though, you came at the right time, traveler. Why don't you help me with something and I shall reward you?"

At the prospects of a reward, Lucy's attention immediately perked up. She moved within the two-story inn, floor creaking under her weight as she passed between the sets of empty circular tables and chairs before stopping before the counter.

"Reward?" She asked. "What do you need, innkeeper?"

He chuckled.

"First, my name is Macos. I used to be an adventurer, then I took an arrow to the knee. Now, I run this inn," He spoke, spreading his arms wide to show the empty place.

". . ."

"It's okay, you can laugh."

He thought she was speechless at the state of the place, but that wasn't it. Sighing, he sat down on a stool.

"Anyway. I met my cooking mentor in the wild while on one of my adventures. She was great enough that she could turn any creature into some type of food," He said, reminiscing, "And I'm beginning to miss the first dish she ever made for me, 'Goblin's Camp Soup.' Could you help me acquire the ingredients? I promise it'll be worth your time."

Lucy nodded. It sounded like the type of adventure she was looking for. "Of course."

"Good, then first I need 5 rabbit meat."

[Innkeeper's Helping Hand, Part 1]
—Macos reminisces and wishes for a helping hand to make a warm dish from his memories.
{Clear Condition: 12/5 Rabbit Meat
Rewards: 50 exp}

Lucy looked at the thing then waved her hand over the counter. Clunking rang as 5 chunks of meat materialized and dropped.

"Done," She said.

He looked at her, shocked for a moment.

"Oh, I suppose it's to be expected of a traveler, you already killed some before." He nodded and took the items. As they disappeared, it was then that she realized NPCs had inventories too. "Alright, now I require boar meat. You'll find them within the northeastern part of the forest, past the field of rabbits."

[Innkeeper's Helping Hand, Part 2]
—the innkeeper requires boar meat to make his cherished camping meal. Kill boars—located within Acron's northeastern forest area—and take their meat.
{Clear Conditions: 0/5 Boar Meat
Rewards: 115 exp}

Lucy's eyes shined. It was time to get slashing with her sword.

"Leave it to me!" She said.
