ACT I

The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 10
The Shattered Dream

With the boy's permission, Rudolf tested him with remaining elemental stones. Hans tested negatively with all four of them. Not having fire, water, wind and ground meant the chances of him becoming a mage was less because the advanced and rare family has a very low chance of manifesting in pairs.

Rudolf was also hoping for Hans to pick the Knight discipline not only because of his greed to teach the boy but because Hans was a prodigy in terms of swordsmanship. Rudolf never acknowledged that in front of him, so it doesn't go up to his head and it was also the sole reason Sierra never tried to lean Hans on the mage discipline. His raw talent in swords was frighteningly good, so she didn't want to suppress it because of her greed in teaching the boy.

After Hans recovered from the pain and fatigue, Rudolf tried the thunder stone. He wanted him to possess the same type as his, but Hans tested negative for it, too. He also tested false with magma and ice type, too. Rudolf moved to test him with dark and light stone too, but surprisingly, those also tested negative.

There was no one in the world who was born mana less. A wild theory ran in his mind and he experimented with a space stone. This gave Hans a headache far more than anything, and Sierra thoroughly nagged Rudolf. Too bad for Hans that he missed his favourite scene.

Rudolf was fidgeting with the last stone in his hand, then Hans woke up and furiously launched himself at his gramps. The pain caused by other stones was like an ant bite compared to this one. After he calmed a little, Rudolf said to him,

This is the last one, squeaky,

Hans opened his tight fist and inhaled the powder, but unlike what he was prepared to, there was no headache but a pleasant feeling surrounded it. The place where he sat suddenly bloomed, small plants and grasses were growing from his position, and within a few moments, the plants grew at a visible pace. Hans didn't open his eyes in nervousness. If he failed in this stone too, then it meant, god played a dirty joke on him.

Sierra asked him to open his eyes and, following her motivating words, Hans finally opened his eyes. He witnessed himself being surrounded by a lush small garden which was still growing. He looked at the faces of Rudolf and Sierra, who were witnessing something amazing even by their standards.

After the blooming stopped, Rudolf mumbled,
Son of a bi..., what is this? This is not possible!.

The last stone was wood stone. This magic was in abundance, but humans or any non plant species do not possess it. Wood stones were used only as a fertiliser and the quantity used here was only capable of growing one plant, not a small garden. Hans saw Rudolf being flustered, this was the sign that he had broken his expectations, so he became happy with the achievement. He turned towards Sierra, who was thinking the same thing as Rudolf and detecting the child’s eyes on her, she smiled at Hans and said,

Congratulations my Hans, you became the third person in our history to possess the wood mana.

Hans asked in nervousness,
It's good right? I can be a knight, right?

Yes, but I don’t know how you could use the wood mana in swordsmanship.

Being able to become a knight was good enough news for Hans, who was on the verge of having no mana at all, so he was happy with the current result. He pulled Rudolf out of his amazement and asked him,

What now?

Yeah, you…you.. should try to convert the mana into aura now.

Hans sarcastically said,
I am a god; I know everything, right?

Oh sorry, try feeling the mana of the surrounding, you could feel the same sensation like before.

Hans tried, and it worked. The mana surrounding him was giving him the same warmth feeling as before. He got happy and asked Rudolf again,

What now?

Rudolf replied,
Just like when we bask in sunlight, feel the mana with your skin and imagine it seeping in.

Hans didn't get how it was possible, but he just did what he was told, and it happened. The mana was entering Hans like water in a dry sponge. Then suddenly Hans felt a sudden pain in his heart and he lost control of absorbed mana. The mana inside of him came out repeating the same phenomenon of birthing many plants around him, but unlike the previous time, he was feeling pain inside.

Both Sierra and Rudolf got surprised; it was unprecedented that something like this happening at this stage. Hans calmed down again and was seeking the elders for an explanation. Rudolf did not realise why this was happening but Sierra knew, she said to them,

It's a cross familiarity disorder.

Rudolf refuted immediately.
It's not possible, he tested negative for every other property…

He stopped in the middle, intensifying the suspense for Hans. The boy panicked and asked,
What are you talking about?

Sierra replied to him,
It's probably because of the divine mana inside of you. When a person is born with mana of different mana families(elemental, advanced, rare and unrecorded), in your case, it is the wood of advanced and divine of unrecorded family.

What are you talking about?

Sierra pushed Rudolf aside, grabbed Hans's shoulder, and spoke.
Your aura is struggling with divine mana inside you. So you can't become a knight.

Her words sounded like a divine punishment to the little boy. Hans got dejected, but the possibility of becoming a mage was like straws for a drowning man, but her next statement even shattered that possibility.

It's also possible that you won't be able to store mana in your heart...

Hans completed her sentence in a gloomy voice,
So I won't be a mage either?

Sierra did not respond. She knew how devastated the boy was feeling. Not becoming a knight was itself disastrous news, but not being a mage either was making him miserable. He learned about the new world, but not becoming either of those meant he could only be a powerless person in a place where strength ruled over everything. He couldn’t protect himself, and protecting others was entirely a different story.

He turned to face the elders. The tears won't stop coming from his eyes and he just stared at them blankly. He didn't even have the strength to lift his hands. Sierra couldn't bear to watch himself drowning in sorrow and said to him while hugging.

When one door closes, another one will open. After giving you the blessing of life, Yudwin won't abandon you. So wait for it.

Sierra continued to hug him, and finally, all the barriers that were holding him back got cracked, and he cried at his terrible fate, which had given him life but without the tools to guard it. Hans sobbed for a long time in Sierra's hug before falling asleep in her arms. She brought him inside and put him in his bed and left with Rudolf to her chambers as he consoled her. In the dark sky of the night, the moon and countless stars showered the dim light, and from the roof of their house, little Hans was stargazing in agony.

He had woken up in the middle of the night and jumped to the roof. He was trying to think of something else, but the thoughts of mana and aura kept reminding him of his misfortune.

The prime culprit of his misfortune was the divine mana inside him, which he couldn't use, yet this vain power was not allowing him to use mana or aura. He attempted making an aura by suppressing the divinity several times, and he succeeded sometimes. He got shrouded in warmth and energy, but his aura got devoured by the divinity and vanished, leaving him in pain and disappointment.

Sierra and Rudolf also had woken up but chose not to disturb his coping with the situation. Suddenly a thought came to Rudolf's mind, and he grabbed Sierra's hand in front of him. She got flustered because he didn't control the strength in excitement and turned over. He asked her,

Hans looks exactly like Sam, right?

Sierra responded,
What is that supposed to do here?

Rudolf continued,
they look so alike that you can say they are the same person, right?

What are you blabbering, dear?

Rudolf suddenly become happy and said to her,
Maybe he still has a chance?

Rudolf ran towards the storage. The situation reminded him of his son’s words “I will need this, so make sure you deliver this to me when I need it”. His loud sounds of clink clank in the storeroom drew Hans's attention, and he forgot his sorrow for a moment and jumped straight right into Sierra's arms, looking at Rudolf, who was madly searching for something.
