ACT I

The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 12
The meaning of My Existence

Samson’s choice of words reflected his confidence, and it was humorous for Hans to read. He wished he could have met the man and talk directly, but that was impossible. Dead man can't talk, at least in his knowledge, so he continued the book.

Enough about me. Let's talk about you. I made you because my actions to turn our destinies made many enemies. I died that means I failed to accomplish my task. Humanity is not perfect and it will never be. As long as greed exists, people will wage war to satisfy it, ignoring the big picture that we are fastening our extinction.

Red demon is just a reminder. I believe there is worst to come for us, but I don't want you to do something grand as save the world or avenge me. Just take care of my mother, Sierra, and Master Rudolf in my place. I never get to call him father, I should have. That's all I ask of you in exchange for this..

Sierra was tearing up. Sam’s words meant the sole reason for Hans' existence was to take care of them in his place. She was feeling bad for both of their children. Hans looked at her like there was no need for her to tear up and said,

I would have, even if he didn't ask.

Sierra said to him,
Hans, you don't exist for this; you need to know this.

Hans said with amusement.
Wow, I didn't even think that way, but now I feel pretty pathetic.

Sierra just stared at him, dumbfoundedly. Usually, he joked like this with Rudolf. Hans chuckled after seeing her response. He said to her,
I was just kidding, grandma; I don't mind my life's purpose being taking care of you two. It's a child’s duty to look after his parents after all.

Rudolf intervened.
I can take care of my wife by myself...

Hans apathetically interrupted to him,
Yeah yah gramps.

Hans was feeling pretty good now. All of his worries and anxiety were vaporising like a burning camphor on Yudwin’s stake. He believed God had robbed him of his chance to shine, but with this book he might outshine everyone because the strongest knight wrote this book for him, predicting or probably knowing what hurdles he would face and must have written the way around them.

When he got to know that Sam was sixteen as he authored this book, his admiration for his far sightedness grew to new heights. He returned his attention to the unfinished page, and thought of hurriedly finishing it, but Sierra stopped him.

She said,
It looks like this is only for your eyes, child, so do not tell the contents to anyone, including us.

Hans nodded and ran to his room to complete his reading

I started writing this book after my Goddess Osiris had shown me the future of Genas and the adversaries we have yet to face. For contingency, in case of my unforeseen death, I had to leave some sort of way for my parents to survive, so I have written a way for you to become powerful. I wrote the knowledge given to me in a series of books called ‘Books of Fate’. All of them are not for you. I have distributed it to the right people.

I advised you to follow every page because the book itself is a sentient artefact, it will only show you what you need to know.”

You just have to be not greedy about other books and by only this you will could amass the power which people can only dream about and absolutely in no circumstances share this information with others until you wish to put a target on your back. This was fated for you so it should remain with you.

This is a way to gain Unlimited Mana

END OF PAGE 1

It intrigued Hans to learn more about Samson's books, which held the secret to who knows what, but if the first book showed the way of unlimited mana, what could the rest of the books have? This question was suppressing the author's warnings. He also knew the name of another book called Mandate. It got him curious about that, too. His curiosity already fazed Sam’s words, and he continued reading by turning to the next page.

The next page acted like it heard Hans's mind, which got him surprised.

PAGE 2

Let me repeat myself: if your possession of the book becomes public knowledge, the people who have the ‘Mandate’ will seek you out as I instructed in it and kill anyone without mercy who possesses a book of fate. Mandate has records of the person possessing all the books, so beware of your actions. You can only use the Mandate as the king of Parv, so it's useless for anyone else like this book is for anyone else but you.

“Good luck; and if you could, please convey a message to my mother and father that I have always loved them and this is not my end.”

END OF PAGE 2

Hans was still a growing child, and he did not know when he fell asleep on the wooden floor with the book in his embrace and a pleased smile on his face. Rudolf came to wake him up as usual, but he found Hans giggling in his sleep. Instead of yelling as usual, he gently woke him up. He knew what Hans went through and sensed it was wrong to mock him.

The book in his grip drew the old man's attention, and he chastised Samson inwardly for being so deceptive. He snatched the book from Hans's hands. The boy woke up and took the book back from Rudolf's grasp as if it were some kind of treasure.

Rudolf gave in, cursing the book that it had charmed the boy, and lifted him through his collars to take him for breakfast. Hans was floating above the floor as Rudolf was taking him to the kitchen in his one hand. No matter how many times Sierra urged Hans to leave the book somewhere else, but the boy refused.

Hans stared at their troubled expressions and asked them, while filling his mouth with boiled meat.
Can't Parv lend us the Mandate Book?

Sierra replied
"Why are you asking that?"

Hans explained
He wrote about Mandate in this book.

Rudolf inquired hastily.
What did he write about "Mandate" in it?

Hans, knowing that Samson would not mind sharing this with them he discussed the contents of the book in the detail.
It is also a "Book of Fate."

Sierra curiously asked,
"Books of Fate?"

Hans replied to her while raising the book .
According to this, he wrote multiple books, and I think if someone got all of them, then that person could become the strongest, like him.

He asked back,
Did Samson have any kind of power that he could pass on?

Sierra answered nonchalantly
Yes, it was an artefact…

She stopped herself from further speaking on the matter and said,
This might grow something big that you can't deal with, Hans.

She stared at the book as it was an enemy and grasping her intentions, Hans tightly hugged the book. He looked at the elder and declared,
No, it's mine.

Seeing him determined on keeping the book, Sierra asked Hans,
Can You promise me you won't look for other books?

Hans asked
Do I have to keep that promise? He asked me not to search for it too.

Yes, even if he asked you to, I would have stopped you.

Hans looked down at the book and finally said,
Sorry, Grandma, but I can't stop myself from searching those, but I will do it when I am super powerful like Gramps, that I can promise you.

Hans was waiting for Sierra’s affirmation and which parent could win against their children's wishes, so she gave in. He bounced back in happiness and started gulping the food fast so he could read more. He was naturally curious, but he was restraining himself from asking them more about Samson balantly. but something he had to know, so he carefully framed his words.

Can I ask you something about your son?

Sierra calmly responded
What do you wanna know?

How was he? Asked Hans

Rudolf interjected with a proud smile and said,
For one, he was a lot smarter than you. I only need to teach him one step and he could devise the next by himself, unlike someone I know.

Hans pouted on hearing his reply and looked at Sierra, and she responded to his questioning gaze

He was an obedient child who matured early and never made us worry. He might have felt the need to be the best in everything, so he didn't get abandoned. My only regret is that I couldn't make him feel more secure.

Hans responded to her regretful words.
No see, he left me for you guys. It shows how much he cared for you. I never felt not loved here and I assure you, he would have felt the same.

Sierra was just staring at him, and after the brief pause, she said,
Oh, our squeaky has grown. He could even console me.

Hans continued with a flushing face,
He left you two a message saying, "I always loved you and this is not my end."

Hearing Sam's last words finally made her reach a closure. Rudolf was also sweating through eyes because tearing up was not suitable for his personality as he would have said, but the ending of the sentence made him wonder “this is not my end ”.
