Chapter 14
The Forest of Treants

Rudolf looked at the boy once more while taking a chunk of meat into his mouth and replied to his question about treants,

Hans, apart from humans, elves and dwarves, there are animals and the animals which live in high mana zones like Ghost Isles are called beasts, but there are some special plants or trees that could use mana. Those humanoid trees are called treants. They come in many forms. It could be as small as a sprouted bean or as big as a thousand year's old tree,

Hans asked again
What about their class?

Rudolf answered
There is no class division for those. One could be of class one or class seven.

Hans asked again
Are they strong?

Rudolf answered him again
I won’t say they are strong, but they are tenacious bastards. It's hard to kill one. If you leave any part of them alive, it will regrow in no time and come back to bite it in your ass with a forest of them. So I don't want to mess with them if possible.

Hans was now much more captivated by Treants, and just like Sam, he wanted to meet one. So he requested Rudolf to take him to see a Treant which the old man was expecting from their conversation and asked him to get ready after the lunch.

Sierra didn't stop them, but she warned them to be cautious. Hans kissed her on the cheek and walked away with Rudolf. He sat on Rudolf's shoulder as usual and was expecting to experience what Samson felt in Treants for himself.

Rudolf took him to the middle of central forest, home of powerful mid range predators. These things were not a threat to him, but if they started arriving in groups, even Rudolf would have no choice but to flee. He told Hans that treants will not retaliate if we do not provoke them, but they are quite territorial and will allow no one near them. They had almost reached the central forest when they came across some powerful beasts.

When those things saw Rudolf, they either ran or ignored him because he was not looking for a fight. His aura was letting them know they were not on the menu today.

After not so long, they saw the first treant. it was like an uprooted tree, slithering through its roots and waving his many branches as hands. He was a lot slower than what Hans expected. He asked Rudolf,

Do the Genas also have treants?

Rudolf responded,
They are, but they are rare. I never saw any of the plant type beasts in Genas.

Hans was carrying a small journal with him and was writing whatever he found. He interpreted Ghost isles as a special place where beasts differed from the mainlands and as far as he inferred, Treants were just awakened trees that gained consciousness and mana.

He spotted another slow moving uprooted tree that had a face like structure in the enormous trunks. It was different from the previous one and had more humanoid structure than it.. They moved while making a lot of noises of large things dragging around. The surrounding beast did not bother them. Rudolf’s explanation was turning out to be true. Even the powerful beast gave them a way to pass.

Hans was looking at them for quite a while now, but he wanted to watch them when they used mana, but that thing was just idly moving. The only way a treant would use mana is to defend itself, and no beast was crazy enough to provoke a single treant because of the overprotective nature of their kind.

Hans was now growing impatient; he needed to see how the treants used magic. Suddenly, he felt a stare on him . He told Rudolf, but the old man didn’t detect any mana fluctuation. The constant gaze he felt was making him irritable. He closed his eyes and asked Rudolf to put him down. Hans used a detection skill which Rudolf taught him way before. It was not a skill that needed mana, but tuned his senses needed for a knight.

Hans pointed toward Treant and said to Rudolf,
It feels like that thing is calling me.

Rudolf tried to stop him, but Hans rejected him and started moving further, and Rudolf had no choice but to follow him cautiously. As Hans went deeper in the forest, they came face to face with hundreds of treants, who fixed their gazes on them.

Rudolf broke cold sweat and tried to pick Hans to flee, but he got rejected once again. He was growing impatient because if the treants wanted to do anything to them, he would really need to up his game this time. But his worries were for naught as Hans opened his eyes, his golden pupils shined a dim light and all the treants shook like welcoming him.

Hans ran towards the biggest one and put his hands on it. Rudolf panicked and was about to go for Hans but the other treants politely stopped him. He only sensed curiosity in the treants, so he let it go, but ignoring his anxiety, Hans was enjoying his surroundings. The biggest treant opened the two bright hollows, which looked like eyes, and started using mana to grow little plants surrounding Hans.

The forest became a flowerbed in a few seconds, like a welcome ceremony. By maintaining the connection through touch, Hans was feeling the ability of treants manipulating the nature’s mana like their own, without even taking it inside their body as the book stated; here it was like mana was on their commands. He could really feel like the treants have unlimited access to mana. And what fascinated him more is that he was seeing mana as strands coiling around the treants.

Hans didn’t realise how time flew when he was unconsciously conversing with treants. It was like they both knew what the other party wanted to convey and responded to it accordingly by just contact.

It was the first time Hans felt kindness from someone other than his grandparents and made some friends on the island; he promised them he would return the next day and left the group. While they were on their way, Rudolf asked,

What was happening there?

Hans replied to Rudolf while laughing
They asked me how a Treant like me looks like a human. They thought I was one of them.

You really have a knack to surprise people, squeaky.

As both of them returned to the house, they found Sierra anxiously waiting for them and once again she ignored her tired husband and jumped at Hans, searching for any kind of injury. It was in Hans’ daily routine to tattle out Rudolf’s mischievousness to Sierra, but today he acted like a mature person.

Rudolf told her about the bizarre event of treant thinking Hans as one of them, this made Sierra laughed comically and she teased Hans
At least our “squeaky” is a tree now.

After talking a lot about his day during dining, he went up to his room and opened the fifth page with anticipation

If you are as curious as I know, you should have visited the treants and an unexpected thing might have happened to you. They might have become curious about you. I am hoping for at least this. If you could seek their attention, that means they think of you as from the same species.

Instead of reading my theories here, ask a treant if it can teach you to control nature’s energy. You should act as pitiful as you can get and beg them for their knowledge, they are suckers for their offsprings. If my hypothesis is right, they can somewhat understand you. Both of you have the same mana affinity but differ in structure, so it might be possible for you to learn mana control from the Treants.

But if you cannot, this book will introduce you to my hypothesis. Some of them might work for you, but learning from treant is an idle choice.

after you learn the way either from treants or from my theories, we'll be doing a lot of experiments with your mana Some will fail and some will pass, but I am sure that you could tap into the pure nature’s mana and use it to your will even before finishing a few pages.

Good luck convincing a treant. I know it could be hard to converse with a treant. As a beastmaster, I could not converse with them properly. They attacked me on sight because my presence and mana nature always subconsciously invade their will for submission. But you are different: find the elder of Treant and relay your thoughts to it.

END OF PAGE 5

Hans realised all that the book stated here was true. He couldn't understand the treant’s language, but Hans’ mind got connected as he established the physical touch, resulting in understanding everything it was saying. Once again, he marvelled at Samson’s thinking and got excited for testing the next experiment.
