Chapter 4
The Invitation

This time around, Hans was sitting way far from the door sills, but his bad luck was still coming strong. It was a third of rain and it was still showing no signs of stopping. Rudolf was away from home to get their dinner and Sierra was running out of ideas for entertaining the child.

She spotted the boy mumbling to himself and to start the conversation; she asked him,
What are you mumbling to yourself?

Hans responded in frustration.
It's the third day of rain.

Sierra looked outside and commented,
Well, the weather has been behaving more strangely these days, and the mana is fluctuating more today…

She stopped for a moment, then suddenly got tensed and pulled Hans behind her. She shouted for Rudolf loudly, Hans got flustered by her behaviour and asked her.

What is it, Granma?

Sierra replied to Hans
you shouldn't have sat on doorsills squeaky,

that was ages ago, grandma!

Sierra got tensed and said,
Something is forcing their way in. Stay behind me all the time, got it?

Hans failed to notice anything at all. He never saw a beast approaching their home, so he asked in curiosity.
Are the apex beasts coming here?

Sierra replied in a grim voice
No, it's worse than that.

Hans understood a little. The worst thing Rudolf had warned him about was the apex predators that roamed far from their home. But Sierra’s chosen words were worse than those. It was thrilling but scary at the same time for him because there were still no signs of Rudolf's return.

But as usual, his curiosity overcame his fear of the unknown and he was eagerly waiting for whoever was coming here. Suddenly, the weather deteriorated even more and a loud voice of thunder came spooking him. The boy unconsciously ran behind Sierra, grabbed her gown and started hiccuping. It was his irredeemable habit of when he got scared, and that's why both of the elders called him squeaky.

Sierra grabbed him from behind. She realised that her behaviour might have scared the child more, so she chuckled and imitated Rudolf’s way of saying.

Oh, our squeaky got scared.

Hans refuted instantly, trying to suppress hiccups by thumping his chest softly.
No, I am not.

Hans chastised her while gradually releasing his grip on her gown. The wind gained speed and changed the direction of the rain as a rift in space formed, and four people emerged from it.

A man of small stature clad in fancy light armour was leading the group. He was trying to stop the strong rain from obstructing his vision with his hand above the eyes. He was trying to look ahead clearly and, knowing his intentions, his accompanying knights made an aura sphere to stop the rain from hindering their liege’s path.

It was a clear sight that Hans could see from inside the house. He spotted all four people inside the aura sphere and focused his eyes to see more clearly. The small stature person was protected by his two heavily armoured knights almost the same size as Rudolf and a white-clothed mage with a silver insignia of a circular shield engraving a sword in the middle. Hans could recognise that in his sleep because it was the symbol of Yudwin's temple, which he had seen Sierra praying to countless times.

Sierra rushed Hans into the house further and urged him not to come out under any circumstances. This was the first time he noticed her scary face. She was burning in anger and he felt he should not wait around to see the outcome.

For Hans, Sierra was a frail lady that he wanted to protect, but her show of confidence in dealing with these people was contradicting his belief. With another thunderous sound that shook the sky, a man with a broadsword landed from the skies in between Sierra and the unwelcome guests. The blessed Sword “ThunderClap” was so famed that any aspiring knight knew of its legends. The sword was still emanating the purple sparks coming down on the ground with crackling noises.

The person was undoubtedly Rudolf himself. His hostile entrance alerted all four of them. But they were extra cautious of the lady behind him. Rudolf, by nature, was a free-spirited and reasonable person, but Sierra, on the contrary, was famous for her obstinate attitude. Her title, “the Iron lady” was proof of her very nature.

Rudolf knew if he did not intervene right now, he would have to bury four corpses in this shitty weather, so he got angry instead of her. He pointed his broadsword with a furious countenance and took heavy steps toward the company. His every step was sending the quivers shaking the ground.

The short man showed no sign of being submissive, but respectfully said to the incoming knight,
It's been a while, Sir Alastor.

Rudolf had already deduced who came, but the voice made it more clear. He responded,
Hold the Alastor part, Samwell. I don't deserve to carry that title anymore.

The short man replied,
But you are the Alastor, everyone knows and believes it.

If I was true to my title, Clandor would have been in ruins by now.

Both parties became quiet. Samwell knew Rudolf was not just saying for the show. Samson, his own little brother whom Rudolf has raised as his own, died at the hands of Clandorians while the world watched the strongest knight of that time crumbling happily. It was normal for the past rulers to behave like that. After all, Samson lead Parv to become the strongest nation in his reign, which was concerning for other countries.

Rudolf broke the silence and demanded,
Tell me, kid, what in the hell's name are you doing here?

Seeing the contempt given to their lord, the two elites pulled out their swords and pointed towards Rudolf, but the subject of their hostility laughed and stated,

Heads on the shoulders are quite rare here. Mind if I trim a bit?

Rudolf let loose his savage aura. He didn't want to fight in the first place, but pointing a sword at him was crossing the line. The two knights guarding their king faced the approaching aura head-on. One of them knelt, and another one supported him to remain conscious.

Rudolf sneered at them and said,
They are not bad.

Samwell sighed and added,
Please go easy on them. They were just doing their duties. Still, they took your attack head-on. Didn't that say something about them?

I haven't started yet. Stop the boot-licking and get on with it.

The barely standing knight was not showing any signs of giving up, so Samwell ordered him.

Stand down, don't you remember reading about “battle of the bewitched knight”? Are you confident that you can take him on, not to mention the lady behind him? She could just send us to six feet under in no time.

Rudolf made an annoyed face and said to Samwell,
What a killjoy!

Samwell tolerated him and said,
I became the new king of Grimgar…

Rudolf interrupted
I have heard. What do you want? A congratulatory flower bouquet? I have replied to your letter stating “we am not coming back”. But seeing you already here, my message must have been a rat shit to you.

No matter what reply Samwell got, he was dead set on coming here from the beginning. He looked over Rudolf’s shoulder to see if Sierra was making a move or not. They could somehow deal with Rudolf and escape, but if Sierra was serious, then their escape route would have already gone to sewers, but she felt somewhat weaker than the known stories about her. Which made him relax a little.

Ignoring Rudolf's mocking comments. He calmly said to him,
You already know what would happen if red demons broke free. You have seen what those extraterrestrials did when they arrived here 26 years ago.

Rudolf angrily replied,
Keep your naive thoughts to yourself, new King. You shot yourself in the ass by abandoning your own brother.

Rudolf was right. If his brother was still alive, there would have been no problems with the barrier. After all, the real person who created the barrier was the Parvian King Samson. Till both of them were arguing with words, Samwell was prepared to go head to head with him. He defended himself by saying,

It was for the fragile peace between the two races.

Rudolf rebuked him
Momentary stability in GENAS at the expense of my only son’s life; just leave, and do not make me do something that I don't want.

Samwell understood if they kept talking about his dead brother they would only keep arguing, so he kept his calm and said his main purpose of reaching out to them.

Rudolf grunted. He was tired of people seeking him out on account of his dead son’s possessions. He furiously said to him,
Whatever you seek, I do not have it. I am telling you what I told everyone before. I don't know where the sunstones are…

Samwell stopped him and immediately said,
I was not talking about that, Sir. Please hear me out. You have a responsibility to this world…

Rudolf ridiculed him
Responsibility, always the fuckin responsibility. When I was doing my responsibility, my son was battling for his life.

Samwell didn't have words for his grief. It was a miracle that some of the most dangerous people who supported his little brother, including Rudolf, did not retaliate against Clandor after his death.

Rudolf was like an avenging deity, a man who never let go of anyone who did wrong to him, but people never heard from him after his brother perished in the war against elves. After that, Rudolf and Sierra disappeared, and the Parvians closed their borders indefinitely. He got to learn of their location just a few days ago from his father. It was a secret, but he had to tell him about it because of the breach.

Samwell was begging him to just listen for once.
Sir Rudolf, you misread me; I really came here to invite you back home; your mere presence will restore the unrest caused by the breach. Three of the nearest towns got razed by those monsters in a day.

When Rudolf heard about the impact, he became silent. The people didn't do any wrong; they do not deserve to be eaten by those filthy things. He was getting furious. It was a far grave situation mentioned in the letter. Samwell saw Rudolf wavering, so he struck the iron while it was hot.

Concordia wants you back.

ThunderClap - Rudolf’s blessed sword

Battle of the bewitched knight

It is a legendary battle of two days where Rudolf stood tall against the royal army of Indu, who wanted the temple of Yudwin gone. The knight was not a member of the temple, but he fought because the army was after Sierra. The temple would have fallen, but the seventeen-year-old Rudolf successfully pushed back the army by slaughtering everyone that crossed the line.

King Norwin had three sons

Firstborn - Samaire - followed his father to the alliance
Secondborn - Samwell - crowned as the new king of Grimgar
Thirdborn - Samson - late king of the eastern Nation Parv.

Clandor - the kingdom of the Elves.
