ACT I

The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 7
Men Wage Wars for the Women

Samwell looked at the puzzling boy and asked him,
so what do you want Hans?

Simple, just answer my questions. Granma and grampa hardly tell me anything about the world.

Then ask away, I will do my best to answer

Hans fired a question at him.
Why are you forcing my grandma and grandpa?

Because we need them, we are in a dangerous situation Hans, if the grand Utar barrier breaks, then there will be no place safe for us. Your grandparents are very powerful. We need people like them.

Hans fired his next question
Next, why is Granny so opposed to leaving the island?

Samwell looked at Sierra and saw her giving the look that explicitly said ‘do not talk too much’, so he replied as best as he could
I'm not clear why she's opposed to leaving, but I'm guessing the answer is probably my little brother and you, who look like him.

Hans asked again hesitating,
So why is she so concerned? I just looked like him. He couldn't be a bad guy, right?

Samwell sighed and said,

It’s complicated, kid... sorry “Hans”. To some, Samson was a descended god, a hero born to bring salvation to the world, to others. He was more of a calamity. But to your grandparents, he was like their own child who died because everyone abandoned him when he was not needed.

Samwell took a deep breath and turned to face Hans while remembering his dead little brother and said.
Your same appearance will undoubtedly bring joy to many, but it will also bring hate too.

Why? Hans inquired.

When a person has more power than anyone, it garners envy.

Why? Asked Hans again.

Samwell sighed and responded

it's just how humans are. As you have said before, there is nothing great about being a human. If someone has something more than us, then we will try to surpass them and if it does not work, then we drag that person under.

Hans couldn't understand why people behave like this and Samwell also realise the innocent thoughts of the child who hadn't encountered the civilised world yet. So he continued.

But not everyone's the same. I mentioned before that some people will feel joy too. My brother was a respected king and his people loved him more than anything, well to say loved him will be an understatement. They practically worshipped him. He lived for them and they were ready to die for him, that kind of the king he was.

Hans thought a little and asked again,
Then how come a great person dies?

Samwell sighed and replied to him,
My brother had an enormous stash of the rarest resource of Genas called “sunstones".

Hans didn't get the answer to his question, but listened without interrupting.
Isn't it just a magical ore? Hans chimed in.

No.

Samwell asked Hans
How much do you know about mana ores?

Not much, just that those are condensed mana.

Samwell explained further

There are three mana ores found in nature, Mana stones: an exhaustible source which turns useless after depletion and Mana gems: crystals of tiny sizes and high concentrations, not to mention expensive, but it recharges itself after every depletion.

Hans asked,
Didn't you say there were three?

Yes, the third one is also exhaustible, but it contains too much unknown power. Researchers still struggle to define its origin.

Samwell added,

Apart from my brother, many people could extract the power of sunstones, but my father is the only one who could match him in terms of sunstones control. He built the Grand Utar barrier with Sam that imprisoned the red Demons in the Deadlands.

Hans asked him,
What are Red demons?

Hans already got a brief explanation from Sierra, but he wanted to know another opinion of them. Samwell realised that Hans was kept isolated from the world knowledge, so he told him as concisely as he could. He didn't want to waste his precious time here with the children's story that was known to everyone in Genas.

Many years ago, some people invaded our land from another world. The breaching point was the northern nation of Utar. They ate people as food and domesticated humans there as livestock. To stop them from increasing their influence, my father designed a barrier to imprison them with the sunstones provided by Parv.

He continued,
But some of the sunstone pieces keep losing their energy, creating a gap in the barrier through which a few red demons escaped.

The way Samwell defined red demons was way gory than Sierra, but if sunstones are losing power, then they could fix it by just replacing it, so he laid out his thought in front of Samwell.

Simply replace the old sunstones with a new one,

Samwell sighed and replied,

In Genas, there are no sunstones. It never existed; according to the mage tower researchers, excavation or construction of the sunstones is not possible. That’s why people believed God sent it to rescue people from the onslaught of red demons.

Hans interjected,
Didn't you just claim Samson had the stash? There had to be some left?

Samwell replied

That’s what I like to believe, but we lost the location of sunstones when he died. He didn't share that damned thing with anyone. It was the main reason the world abandoned him in the Elven war and he died at the hands of Clandorians.

Elven war? the word piqued Hans's interest, so he asked with a curious look.

Samwell sighed. He did not expect that he had to talk this much when he was asked to answer his questions; he replied again

Samson of Parv and the Clandor Elves fought against each other in the Elven War. It was the first large-scale battle between humans and Elves, but the difference was that other human nations sided with Elves because Sam refused to give up sunstones.

Is that why no one supported him? Hans inquired.

Yes, Sam stubbornly believed that the sunstones meant greater purpose and denied using it for personal gain. Till his end he stuck to his words and the war never saw a single sunstone from his side.

Hans was not believing his words completely.,
Aren't the red demons a greater purpose? Darn, I am losing the confidence in my grandpa’s strength.

Hans had an unquestionable belief that Rudolf could kill anything he wants, but the world seems to be much more vast and dangerous than he initially thought. King Samson opt in to preserve the sunstones at the cost of his life. His actions clearly meant something.

Samwell assured Hans.

Sir Rudolf is strong, but he is just a single knight. Numbers have strength Hans, it always has been the greatest strength of our kind.that's why you should live with numbers not alone.

Hans ignored his words because the actions of King Samson was occupying his mind more, he couldn't hold back and asked him again,

If he was so important, you should have fought alongside him. Why didn't Gramps help him while he was in danger?

Samwell framed his words correctly because it was a touchy topic for the elders, who were glaring at him because he was telling Hans too much.

I couldn't because he did something pretty bad. Even his own people betrayed him for that. The alliance supported the Clandors and sir Rudolf was fighting red demons then, alongside Lady Sierra. News hardly travelled in Deadlands.

Alliance? Asked Hans.

It is the Alliance of all the Nation of Genas which was formed in the name of stopping red demons.

Hans mocked him.,
If their purpose was to stop red demons, then they should have not chosen a side in internal conflict.

Samwell answered him

The Alliance was already against Samson for hoarding sunstones, and they believed that if Samson ever got pushed to the brink of defeat, he would surely seek help by leveraging the location of his stash, but we shot themselves in the foot when he died without tellin us.

Samwell added,

People cursed him with many things, but those close to him understood, he didn't even breathe without preparing ahead, which is why I was sure that he would commit genocide against elves with the sunstones, but he kept his word to the bitter end.

Hans inquired again,
So what did he do to gain the wrath of elves?

Samwell sighed and replied to Hans’ question.,
He was obsessed with their crown princess and couldn't see her marrying to someone else, so he abducted her.

Hans got surprised and almost bursted to laugh.,
What? It is.. Samson doesn't sound like he will go out like that.

Samwell realised his words ended up telling Hans the whole truth. Hans got lost in thought, he thought Samwell was just messing with him, but his expression didn't do justice to his thinking. He was expecting much more, such as stealing a treasure or destroying the Elven woodland, but the justification he received was not convincing. A great man such as him met his demise because of a woman.

Samwell had an embarrassing smile on his face. He said again,

Yes, it was shocking news because she was the bride of his best friend. They were inseparable friends: Samson, Reina (the Elven crowned princess), Elanor (the crowned Elven prince) and one more.

Hans exclaimed.
Woah, woah, he snatched his own friend’s wife.

Samwell didn't want this topic to venture further, so he said added some more words, neglecting the glaring he was receiving from the elder couple right behind the child.

That’s how the smartest person I know died an unsuitable death.

Hans still was having a hard time to understand, he liked this Sam guy. after all, Rudolf and Sierra also raised him. He silently asked,

Why? Just why did he go out like that?

Samwell replied to Hans,
Being deeply loved by someone makes you strong, but loving someone deeply also gives you madness.

He continued,

You will understand what it is like when you have someone. Your grandpa also fought an unbeatable war for lady Sierra and triumphed. His love was reciprocated, but my brother was just not that lucky.
