ACT I

The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 8
The Life of Strongest Knight

Rudolf was looking at Samwell annoyingly because he kept crossing the line. His boy didn't need to know these things. Hans turned to look at his gramps, not believing that he was also famous for fighting over a woman. He thought maybe Samson's demise was the fault of Rudolf’s influence.

He turned towards Sierra, but the lady was not even paying attention to him. She was deep in thoughts, Samson was not just an adopted son to her. He was the last memento of her dead sister, her nephew, whom she raised like her own, and his death was not the thing she liked to discuss.

Rudolf caught on to her feelings and wanted the conversation changed, but Hans was not particularly a person who thought of others when he wanted to know something. He fired his next question to Samwell.

If he was your brother, that makes him Grimgar royalty, how come he became king of Parv?

Samwell answered

Lady Arahan, Samson’s mother, was the sole princess of Parv and when their king, her father, was on his deathbed, he called for Samson, his sole descendant by blood, and crowned him the new king.

Hans asked to confirm,
And people just accepted it?

Samwell chuckled.
They didn't have another choice. you cant just offend him, whoever spoke against, lost their heads. Sam ruled with absolute tyranny.

So was he an bad king?

No, on the contrary, Parv flourished in his reign. It was kind of short golden age for the regressing nation. There is a rumour that they still follow his policies for governance without any question. A book called Mandate recorded his laws and future policies for running the nation. We don't know how much Parv progressed since it is an isolated country, but I am sure…

Rudolf interrupted him.
Spare the kid with politics Samwell,

Samwell got embarrassed and said,
Ah, yes, it's not something for you to worry about.

Hans didn't care for Rudolf’s words and asked him again,
Why is it isolated?

Samwell looked at Rudolf, and the old man also understood that Hans was planning to graduate today in "Sam's history". He was naturally curious, but today he was obsessing over his dead son.

Samwell thought the child would ask about the world or Concordia where they would move after two years, but all he asked was about Samson. Seeing no objections from Rudolf, the future king continued,

After the War, Concordia interrupted and various peace treaties were signed, Parv compensated Clandor with monetary wealth and the Grimgar claimed their fallen prince’s body but no one found my brother’s artefacts. Parv declared closing the borders for indefinite time.

Hans continued the questioning
Why? Did they become very weak after defeat?

No, it was probably because they feared retaliation from the world, they were without their protector who made enemies, right here and there.

Samwell inspected the child once again and said,
Heed my words, Hans, keep your distance from Elves. Samson kiled them, i mean a lot of them in the war. They will definitely use you to avenge their brethren.

Hans asked in refutation,
So I already have a bullseye painted on my back and you still want us to go back.

Samwell assured him with confidence,
Don't worry about that. As long as you stay catious and follow my arrangement, there will be no problems.

And what will that be, Mr King.

do not leave Concordia.

Hans sighed and asked again,
That book “Mandate”, can I get a copy of it?

Samwell dumbfoundedly looked at Rudolf, to which the old man answered,
Just answer the brat. He eats books for breakfast.(he is an avid reader)

Samwell shook his head by sides and said to him,
it is not possible. After losing the body of their king to Grimgar, those extremists prevented anything related to their king from leaving the country and that book was one of them

A book that others cannot take piqued Hans’ curiosity even more. He wanted to do many things after going to Genas and reading this forbidden book added to his list of things to do.

When his questioning seems to be stopped, Ekdamir interjected and said to Sierra,

This is not what I came for. I wanted you to come back and resume your rightful duties. You worked hard to get to that position. Doesn't this choice make that work fruitless?

No, elder Ekdamir, I am making of my past, so my hard work can never be fruitless.

Ekdamir was silent. He knew the determined look of Sierra was blatantly saying that she was going to see things through, so he had no choice but to give up. The old priest knew how difficult this decision would make her life, but as always, walking a floral path was not her style.

He said to her with a warm smile,
I might not be able to help you directly, but do contact me when you are troubled. I will do whatever I can.

Thank you, Elder Ekdamir.

The old priest smiled without saying much after that and Samwell took a breath of relief because it looked like there were no objections to his arrangements. If the deal between Indu and Grimgar failed, then he would have kissed goodbye to his throne.

On the other hand, Hans was silent. The reality was finally sinking in him. He got what he wanted, a way to leave this place, but he also got to know that he was diffrent from his gramps and granma. In the momentary rush he denied it, but the situation was quite baffling to him. There was no precedent for him how to live or will he would be like others or not. Thoughts like these are starting to eat him up.

Sierra caught on and hugged her while saying,
You are not a person who worries much, so don't think about it. You are alive because Yudwin wanted to be in this world. I am sure she had a plan for you.

Hans never leaned towards the religion, but he still believed in those words because Sierra spoke them. He got himself together and assured her that he was better.

Samwell was liking the boy more and more, one of the reasons might be because he looked like his brother, but there was a certain charm in Hans that was different from Sam. Then suddenly Hans asked Sierra to confirm something.

Granma, do I have divine magic in me?

Sierra chuckled lightly and said,
I don't know; you haven't shown the signs of mana manifestation yet and only women are recorded to possess the divine magic in the past.

Hans asked again,
Are you strong like gramps?

Rudolf replied instead of her,
She is, but not right now, her powers have not returned fully after she used a spell, which sucked her mana dry.

Hans looked at her with a worried gaze, but she assured him that her powers will soon return. Samwell interjected and said to Hans,

When you said you would ask me questions, I thought you would ask about Concordia or Grimgar, sir Rudolf’s birth place…

Hans disinterestedly said,
It looks like you are itching to tell, so just tell me what Concordia is?

It is your grandfather's former school, a place with hundreds of years of history , where he became a knight and taught children like you. He was the dean of Knights there.

Samwell paused a bit and continued,

As I have mentioned to you, if you follow my arrangement, no one will be foolish enough to touch you there. Concordia might be neutral in everything, but one thing it doesn't tolerate is when someone messes with their people.

Seeing his interest increasing, Samwell mentioned that Rudolf became the youngest warlord, the highest level a knight could achieve, and all of this was possible because of Concordia. This got Hans hooked on this place, and now he was genuinely showing interest in going there. The boy might be sharp, but it is not difficult for a political person like Samwell to see what he liked.

Hans asked Samwell,
Elves will be there, right?

Of Course but don't worry, so do many professors along with your grandparents.

This is fascinating; don't elves believe others are beneath them?

Samwell clarified Hans's question.

That is an old belief; they are far more docile now, more than when the Elven council was in power. The Elven council opposed the Concordia teaching Elves for a long time, but after Samson decimated the council in the war, there was no one left to oppose.

Hans went back to his serious thoughts and finally broke the silence.
So the Elven war changed many things….

Rudolf disregarded them and stated authoritatively,
He died, period. I don't want to hear anything more about that Elven nonsense.

His head was down and thinking about something, and then he said it again.
You should leave right now and quit feeding Hans's head with strange words.

The visitors all took a step back as they sensed the knight's seeping aura. It engulfed him in a purple light that was pouring out of Rudolf's body like lightning crackling upwards. He said in a commanding tone,

Leave Now.
