The Failed Prodigy

Chapter 9
The Mana Property

Rudolf continued to emanate the horrifying aura and declared,
We’ll return after two years, and notify the world that the first person who asks me about sunstones and any other shit would taste my sword without seasonings. I have a lot of repressed anger. Do not give me any excuse to vent on.

Samwell realised that this man was in a bad mood at the moment, and all he could do was nod in agreement and assure him that his return would be without incident. They had all arrived in the morning and the meeting, with all of its difficulties, lasted all day.

It was a dark night, and they fixed the SpaceDoor (portal) to prepare for their departure. Samwell wished to speak with Hans again since he sensed a fated connection with him, but the night was late and the boy already went to sleep and they couldn't wait until morning. Samwell said his goodbyes to the old couple and exited through the SpaceDoor (portal).

Sierra already has put Hans to the bed and bid farewell to the elder. She felt relieved now the unknown guests were gone. He buried her face in Rudolf’s broad chest and, after relaxing herself in the comfort of her husband, she spoke,

Can we trust Samwell’s words?

Yes, for now, this seems the best option.

Rudolf stated as he glanced at her.
Because Parv has little interaction with other places, it is possible to avoid them to some extent, but I still have a hard time believing that "the rules of a good nation," which he wrote as a time pass after the training, has become a holy book which Parv follows to the letter.

Sierra asked in surprise.
What did he write in that book?

The last time I saw it, it was incomplete. He simply said he was writing about what he will do if he becomes a king. I thought he was joking, but this turned out to be something serious.

Rudolf said to Sierra while walking to their chambers
I was scared for Hans; I thought he would have a hard time accepting it.

He is not showing it but this must have shocked him.
The more we ask, the more bad he will feel, so we just need to get him distracted and he will forget it in no time. The boy has no notion of races, anyway.

The couple snuggled away to sleep, and the weather stabilised after a while. At the crack of dawn, Rudolf stormed into Hans’ chamber and roused the sleepy boy up, which resulted in Hans’s retaliation. He grunted and yelled at him,

Gramps, what in god's name are you doing? Would you like me to bother you when you make love with granny?

Rudolf's face went blank for a time. He ignored Hans’ silly talk and exclaimed excitedly.
Come on you lazy brat, we only have two years.

Rudolf belatedly realised that Hans had threatened him. He needed to teach him a lesson in today's practice. Hans walked out of the house with some sleep still in his eyes and caught the wooden sword thrown in his face from Rudolf. Hans told Rudolf,

I'm guessing you're going to beat me up today since I threatened you, Gramps.

Then, with a loud voice, Hans shouted to Sierra, and when she came to the door, he said to her,
Granny, please watch. Today is the day I beat this old man.

Rudolf's cheeks shrank; he was wondering if his intentions were that easy to read for this brat. Seeing his flustered face, Hans interjected sarcastically.

Gramps, it's all written on your face,

Rudolf calmed down a bit, as a warlord knight of grade 90, being caught by this brat was a blow to his pride. He ignored Hans once more and concentrated, and a luminescent purple veil of energy encircled him. Hans interjected once more, this time asking,

Why is it paler than yesterday?

Aren't you an observant one? The intensity of colour changes how concentrated it is. Now tell me squeaky, what does the purple colour aura represent?

Hans replied in a sarcastic tone,
Wow, such a tough question?

Rudolf got irritated and asked in a loud voice,
Just answer me, you brat.

It shows that you have thunder mana property.

Right. So tell me about every type of mana?

Hans made a grumpy face. It was elementary knowledge that Sierra taught him in his toddler days. He indifferently answered in a textbook way,

There are three families of mana, first is Elementals, containing fire - bright orange, water - indigo blue, ground - light brown and wind which is pale green.

Hans paused a bit and continued,
Second family is called advanced containing Thunder - purple, ice - cyan, magma - red, wood - translucent.

Rudolf interrupted,
And the third one?

Be patient, gramps, I am telling it, aren't I? The third family is called Rare, dark with black colour and light with bright white. Satisfied?

Instead of Rudolf Sierra, who was silently looking at them, said,
There is another family called unrecorded, time, space, and divine. I possess the divine mana, one and only in this world. If we talk about space mana, we only found it in inorganic things like mana stones.

Hans was never told about this unrecorded family of mana, which made him thinking hard and before he could ask, Sierra answered beforehand what he was going to ask.

Time is the authority of god and space magic doesn't exist in living things but gems and stones.

Hans was going to speak, but he got interrupted by her again. She said,
And the rarest of the mana property is wood, there are only two recorded persons possessing that.

This time Hans didn't let Sierra get ahead of him and asked,
Then why is wood mana in advanced, not in unrecorded?

Because those who possessed it were well known in the world, one of them saved a nation from famine in the past. And unlike space which only occurred in inorganic things and divine, which only happens in chosen ones. Some of the intelligent species of plants possess wood mana, and it comes in mana stones which are abundant .

Rudolf interfered in their talks,
We are deviating from our real purpose here, squeaky focus here.

Yes, sir.

Now tell me why knights exist?

Because of mages, isn't this why Sir Dietrich created the aura method?

Rudolf sighed and said,
Don't live in the fictional past, I am asking in the present day scenario.

Hans stayed silent, so Rudolf answered,

For being a mage, one needs to have talent and a very good one on that, but for a knight, talent matters a little and only hard work makes a difference. For a long time, a person possessing a single type of mana was considered useless, but when knights surfaced, that stereotype vanished. Now knights have a large population of mana users.

Hans said,
Why are you telling me this,I have already decided to become a knight?

Rudolf sighed and said,
It's not up to you to decide what you will be until you awaken the mana within you for an aura to be created. A person must possess a single type of mana property, but what will happen if you awaken multiple mana properties?

He paused a bit and continued,
Then you can kiss goodbye to your sword.

This was news to Hans, he thought to himself, so becoming less talented was the only way to become a knight. He was praying for him to only wake a single type of mana. He was in a daze and Rudolf broke his daydreaming by handing him a small glass like pebble which could easily fit in his small hands.

Hans asked the old man,
It's a property stone. Can I awaken my mana property now?

Hans has been trying this procedure since he was six, but until this day, he hasn't awakened any kind of mana. He quickly clenched the pebble in his grip and, just like every time, the pebble did not show any changes when he released it.

The boy didn't get disheartened. After all, it was not his first time to feel like this. Rudolf was sure that Hans possessed the mana property but it was just not showing up. He said to Hans in a serious tone,

You have it inside you. Don't whine, I have a way, but it will be painful for you. Do you wanna try?

Hans answered in annoyance,
Why didn't you tell me sooner?

That means yes, right squeaky?

Ofcourse.

Rudolf signalled Sierra, and she got ready to heal anything that might happen to Hans. The old man brought out all types of mana stones that he could find, except divine and time because that didn't exist, at least not in his knowledge. Hans asked in curiosity,

What do you want to do with these?

Rudolf showed a wicked smile and said,
We are going to jumpstart you by doping.

Hans took a step back and asked again,
Why do I think you are enjoying this, old man?

Because I am, now, kid…

He broke the fire stone into smithereens and asked Hans to inhale the powder. Hans did what he was told hesitatingly. When the powdered firestone entered inside, Hans felt a sudden headache, which almost split his head. He cried in pain and after a while he calmed down with the help of Sierra.

Rudolf asked with a wicked smile,
Do you wanna continue? We have a lot to test, but for now, it is safe to say you do not possess fire mana.

Hans asked away,
Why?

Because if you did, you would have released the fire mana inside of you instead of almost peeing the pants.

Hans looked down on his nether region and sighed in relief. There was no moisture in there. He glared at the old man who was laughing at him because he got him. After detecting another glare from his wife, he coughed and said,

This is the method we used to test late bloomers like you. So do you wanna continue?

Hans gulped his nervousness and said while showing false confidence,
Bring it on.
