Tang Zhelan didn't mean to avoid Zhao Feng but ever since Zhao Jing mentioned if she could reconsider her uncle for marriage, the thought somehow stuck in her mind. Was she really considering him?

How foolish, Tang Zhelan told herself. She didn't want to get involved with Zhao Feng out of gratitude. While she admitted that Zhao Feng was way better than the man she dated in the past, she didn't want him to get dragged into her problems.

Zhao Feng had done enough for her already, and the last thing she wanted was for him to suffer because of her. These days, she was only able to talk to him during dinner as she kept herself busy during daytime with work at the inn.

Ever since she arrived here in Lijiang, she felt better than when she was in Shenzhen. His whole family accepted her without a question, allowing her to help around the inn in return for their hospitality.

She had started to get used to the kind of life she had here that she barely thought of getting back in the city. Every evening, she would join the Zhao family for dinner. They'd shared meals and talked about all sorts of topics they could think of, and they were kind enough not to question her with her problems back at home and what her plans were for the future.

Zhao Feng might have not attended college like her, but he'd proven that he was smart and surprisingly knowledgeable about a lot of things.

"Why have you decided to work rather than attend college?" Tang Zhelan asked him one evening during their dinner.

Zhao Feng shrugged and continued to eat his meal heartily.

"I'm not that good, Miss Lan. Also, I don't want their money to go to waste because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish my studies."

"Oh?" Tang Zhelan arched her brow.

"It's not that I'm bad at school. It's just I feel like I didn't need it back then," he explained. "But I guess I should've taken a degree since I knew I'm going to run the inn after my brother died."

The only reason he could get away from his responsibilities at their inn was because he had an elder brother to rely on. However, now, he had to be responsible not only to their business but also to his niece.

"Miss Tang, the inn has improved so much because of you." Auntie Lin beamed Tang Zhelan a smile as the latter helped her with the admission slips on the reception desk.

"I'm glad I'm able to help, but it's not that much." She smiled in return.

The front door of the inn slid open, taking both women's attention. Tang Zhelan rose from her seat along with Auntie Lin. She was about to plaster a polite smile on her face when suddenly her whole body went stiff once she recognized who came to visit them.

What was she doing here in Lijiang of all places?!

"So you've been hiding all this time, Zhelan?" Her mother's eyes swept around and frowned. "I must say you disappoint me, dear daughter."

"She's your mother?" Auntie Lin asked her in shock.

"I'll deal with her, Auntie. Go and get something to eat. I know you haven't taken a break yet." Tang Zhelan gave her a reassuring look. She didn't want anyone to overhear what her mother was about to tell her.

Thankfully, most of their guests had left the inn to do sightseeing around the town, and she wasn't expecting to see them return soon.

Auntie Lin looked at Tang Zhelan, then to her mother. They had known their VIP guest came from a wealthy family, but none of them were ready to meet her mother with an imposing aura. She looked so cold and unfeeling, unlike Tang Zhelan.

"Hello, dear mother. I wasn't expecting you today." The warmth in Tang Zhelan's voice vanished the moment she was left with her mother. She also sounded wary and stiff while gauging her mother's expression.

"If you'd bothered to give me and your father a call, then I wouldn't have had to come all the way out here just to see you." Her mother's lips curled in disgust. She walked around like a royal, her heels clacking on the hardwood floor of the inn.

"What the hell are you doing in this shabby place, Zhelan? This is such a poor place for you to stay in."

"So sorry about that, Mother," Tang Zhelan spat back. "What brings you here anyway?"

"Why else but to bring you back home? Don't you know how worried we were when we couldn't reach you? Your future in-laws are also dying to meet you. When I heard that you are here in Lijiang, I simply had to check it myself and take you home at once."

She paused and took in the clothes Tang Zhelan was wearing. She took a deep breath and shook her head.

"Dear, what is wrong with you? Not only are you allowed to live in a place like this, but also work as a servant?"

"Yes, Mother. If you don't notice, I'm working right now."

Her mother closed her eyes as though she'd seen Tang Zhelan in such a disgraceful state.

"Dear Zhelan, how many times have I told you? You aren't to work for others. We do not serve people, darling."

"There's nothing wrong with me working here, Mother. It's not like I'm serving people meals in a maid's uniform. I'm managing this inn as you can see."

"Nonsense, dear. You'd rather work here than marry a wealthy man that could provide you everything?"

It was at that moment when Zhao Feng came and witnessed the scene. Of course, he knew who Lady Tang was but he stared at her incredulously after hearing the conversation between mother and daughter.

This was the kind of mother his Miss Lan had to put up all her life. Wasn't she tired of how they treated her already?

Lady Tang turned her attention to him, immediately dismissing him as something insignificant.

"I can't believe you ran away to be with our butler. Darling, what's wrong with you? How could you stoop so low?"

Tang Zhelan eyed Zhao Feng then her mother.

"Don't misunderstand, Mother. It was me who asked for Zhao Feng's help."
