Chapter 255 Heritage

“What’s wrong? Are you unhappy, Xiang Ning? Did he say something nasty to you?” The rest of the team were piloting their mechs back and noticed that Xiang Ning wasn’t saying anything. All of them could see that he was thinking about something, and hadn’t wanted to disturb him at first.

“Nothing, it’s just a little problem,” Xiang Ning reassured them. While his voice betrayed nothing, his mind was racing. While fighting against the Scylla, he heard a strange language. There was no way the system would simply make up a random language!

What did that mean?

Fury Points would only be credited to Xiang Ning if the enemy was both sentient and directing their anger at him. That meant that the ‘demons’ he had been fighting were most likely real sentient beings that he might be able to communicate with!

The more he thought about it, the scarier it sounded. No, I must try talking to them next time.

......

Back at the base, Xiang Ning and the rest withdrew from the exploration mode. Not only had they obtained a lot of contribution points, but they also felt satisfied at completing the mission. They felt like they were back on the battlefield once more.

“Exploration mode is excellent, but a single battle can last for so long and we have to make sure that our mechs aren’t destroyed. I feel so tired afterward. If it weren’t for autopilot mode, I’d never make it back to base,” Li Zimo chuckled.

Xiang Ning nodded and said nothing. A seed of suspicion had been planted in his heart. “Lu Shiyu, should we go now?” He felt like it was useless to think about things for now and decided to leave.

“Yeah, we still have an hour or so to go, but it should be fine if we depart now. You’ll have to compete against a few people, but there should be no problem. Unfortunately, you still have to go through the procedure as a formality,” said Lu Shiyu.

Theirs was an important mission. Naturally, the government couldn’t just let Xiang Ning come and go as he pleased. The other martial artists from various schools and societies would also join him. Thankfully almost all of the candidates had been disqualified, because the conditions were to be younger than eighteen years old and at least tier three.

Xiang Ning only needed to be in the top ten to join the test.

Everyone else knew about it, including his friends. Initially, they had also been invited to join the screening process, since they also met the conditions, but all of them forfeited when they heard that Xiang Ning would be participating. They all knew how strong Xiang Ning was. His strength was abnormal. Even up to now, they had yet to witness his true strength and limits.

Since he was so strong, they had taken the opportunity to practice against him every time they could. They could use their full strength without any reservation, and Xiang Ning would still receive their attacks in a relaxed manner. He would even point out where their weaknesses were and how to use their strengths—he was a veritable demon himself! That was why everyone called him a teacher even though he wasn’t officially one.

“Good luck Xiang Ning.” Fang Rou was confident that he would win.

“Don’t worry.” Xiang Ning smiled and followed Lu Shiyu.

“Alright, we have to go and get ready, too.” Fang Rou held Liu Ruoxue’s hand and walked out. Rather than signing up as security for the inner ring, they had chosen to sign up to work on the outer perimeter. After all, they would never pass up a chance to enter the stadium for free.

Even people from influential families, like Fang Rou, Li Zimo, and Liu Ruoxue were unable to obtain any tickets due to Annot’s crazy fanatics.

......

At four o’clock in the evening, Xiang Ning and Lu Shiyu arrived at Thunder Dojo. That was the site of the screening process since it had the best facilities within Marsh City.

Under the guidance of the employees, they arrived at an arena on the seventh floor. It was a large open space built of a strong material that was capable of withstanding attacks from a tier five martial artist. Even the walls were made of that material.

“Alright, I’ll be heading to the observation platform. Good luck!” Lu Shiyu cheered him on before she left.

Xiang Ning nodded and surveyed his surroundings. He saw that many people had already arrived, but none of them caught his eye. He silently sat in a corner and texted Fang Rou.

“Hey, look over there, there’s someone new.”

“Want to go introduce ourselves? Everyone that’s tier three and above while under eighteen years old are geniuses. Everyone’s achievements here should be excellent in the future. No harm in making connections.”

“Good point.”

But just as they were about to greet him, Xiang Ning suddenly weirdly smiled. He was amused with Fang Rou and whatever she had sent and tried to suppress his laugh. His Combat Instinct suddenly activated as he felt that someone was staring at him.

He tried to calm down. I need to be more composed and elegant in a public setting. But before he could do so, Fang Rou sent another funny meme and he laughed out loud.

“Nevermind, he’s a weirdo. Hey, someone just came in. Let’s go meet him instead. He looks like a student from Hanwu Academy.”

“Huh. I didn’t know that you’re this knowledgeable about Marsh City.”

“Of course, we’re all competitors. I hope that boy doesn’t come or I’ll have to forfeit.”

“Hmph! Looks like someone is a fake fan. If you were a true fan, you would’ve risked your life just to get closer to Annot.”

“Hey! Fine, maybe I don’t have that much faith. I’ll listen to each and every single song of hers a hundred times when I get back.”

Xiang Ning was having fun chatting with Fang Rou when he suddenly heard about a student arriving from Hanwu Academy. He hadn’t seen Wu Rui in a while.

Just as he thought about that, he saw Wu Rui in the crowd. He was taller than everyone else, so it was quite obvious.
