Chapter 114 – Tir Na Nog

『Oh, I can see it now~.』

“It’s still out of my range.”

After flying for a little while longer, I can see a grey wall of magic power, and the land behind it.
Fairellen-san flies straight through the wall of magic power …Is this another dimension? Grey is the colour of the spatial attribute, and I can see the magic power forming a grid. Some kind of dimensional barrier?
At any rate, after passing through the wall I return to the normal dimension. The location name shown on the mini-map has changed to Tir na Nog.

“Arrived!”
“It’s a field of flowers all around.”
“Fairies basically float around, so they won’t be trampled~.”

It’s exactly like calling it a flower field would imply. Colourful flowers are blooming all around. There are flowers as far as my field of view covers.
It certainly is like a fairytale…

“There are some flowers with really strong colours.”
“Some dangerous looking ones. A field full of flowers that are strongly asserting themselves! Colourful!”
“…This flower garden really is amazing.”
“Like a fairytale flower garden, huh~? Especially the colours.”

It’s almost refreshing how little colour balance there is. All these colours make me wonder if it’s completely random RGB.

“It gets better towards the centre. Specifically, the living area.”
“So this is what happens when there’s no management.”
“It’s starting to hurt my eyes, so let’s go quickly!”
“Right. Let’s go.”

This area is basically a flower field, with not much else. There are some fruit trees that will provide food growing nearby. The ones I can see are apples, of course.
I understand that there’s no sense of season here, anyway. The fruit is growing while completely ignoring seasons…

A little after Fairellen-san says “Oh, I can see it.”, it also comes into my range.
Now this is something I’ve never seen before! Fairies with a lot of different attributes and many small houses, each of which look quite unique. It’s a lot of fun to look at.

There are fairies of the six basic attributes, Salamander, Fairy, Nixie, Pixie, Sprite and Nightmare, as well as races that I’ve not seen among players.

“Leprechauns are famous.”
“They’re a gathering type. I don’t expect to see any players as one.”
“It would be difficult to make collecting your strongest skill.”
“Storm attribute seems to change depending on the gender. Vodyanoy and Rusalka”
“I don’t think I’m familiar with them?”
“I looked it up, and they’re male and female water spirits…or rather, the ghosts of those who died in water-related accidents.”
“So that’s why storm, then.”

Since the fairies themselves are small, naturally their houses will be small too.
Fairies are greatly affected by their attributes though, so they each seem to have land that matches. Water types near a lake, fire near a volcano, wind in the treetops, and so on… It looks like each attribute has its own village.
According to Fairellen-san, even though the island is not that large, it is like a miniature garden, packed with different environments…

And I’m really being looked at.

“Being popular is painful.”
“I’m used to it.”
“…It’s still a lot better than everyone kneeling down at once, like in the Nether and Abyss.”
“Uwaa, sounds tough.”
“Well, they quickly calmed down and just step to the side and bow their heads now, so I got used to it.”
“Humans are really adaptable. It’s amazing what you can get used to.”

It was fun at first, but got more and more annoying, until I eventually stopped thinking about it. I got used to it. Yeah, I’m used to it now. It doesn’t interfere with my actions, so it’s best to just let the Residents do as they like.
I mean, if it’s just being looked at, like this, it’s not much different to in the Starting Town.

“Well, let’s go and see the pigs”.

Where are these pigs, the mysterious life forms that resurrect before you can even notice.

Following Fairellen-san for a little while, I arrive in an ordinary plain, that is not like the earlier flower garden. She said she can see them in the distance, so let’s switch to eye-chan’s viewpoint.

There are a number of pigs, roaming freely a ways ahead of us.
But…

“Why are those pigs head-butting each other?”
“No idea? I don’t have all the answers.”

The pigs are fighting amongst themselves. I wonder what they’re doing.
It’s true that the marker is green, not yellow. Hm…?

“Those pigs…have black souls.”
“Eh? All of them?”
“All of the pigs over there…at least.”
“Ehhh? …Ah, I have a slightly unpleasant feeling.”
“It’s strange. I’ll use «Identification».”

Pig Lv1
A resurrecting, edible pig that lives in Tir na Nog, the land of fairies.

※Pig’s punishment.
Souls who have committed mortal sins, sentenced to repeatedly reincarnate as specially prepared pigs.
This is known to only a few, such as the fairy king Oberon and his queen.
While still quite delicious, there is no choice but to equivocate when asked if it is pork.

Ah, so it was like that after all.
The markers are the same as for Residents rather than pets, so that’s what happens to black souls.

<There is no forgiveness for mortal sins without punishment. There is no need to intervene.>

As you wish.
…I wonder if this is a punishment for sins that aren’t enough to warrant soul destruction.

“They seem delicious, those pigs.”
“Seriously?”
“Here’s the result.”
“Hmm…I can only see the top line~. But the pig’s punishment. Harsh.”

They’re chased and hunted by hungry fairies every day…
They’re already back before you notice, so they’re not being bred like normal pigs. It’s like ‘Are they even pigs?’.

“Fairies seem like pranksters, so I wonder if they torment them.”
“No….? I’m pretty sure they were killing them quickly…”
“Ah, is that so. I was thinking that might be part of the punishment.”
“Isn’t it because they’re treated as food~? It’s hunting, not killing.”
“I see…”

As if to prove Fairellen-san’s words, six fairies came over and drove three pigs in front of them before killing them with magic attacks.

“Those were blows to the head…”
“Like a hunter would.”

Not to kill them, but to eat them. …In other words, the less damage from battle the better. As a result, they aim to pierce the head, a vital point, with a single blow.

“It’s like that every day, so it does seem like punishment~.”
“That blackness would put them on the lowest levels of the Abyss, so I see no need for sympathy.”

I don’t know if the one inside is the same, but three time a day… morning, noon and night, should be enough as punishment. I don’t know how long that will last.
God is merciless indeed.
The hunted pigs are carried away by the fairies.

“Dona dona~”
“There’s already no light in their eyes…”

Delivery…
We’ve already passed the point where you can say “No way~”.

“Ah, right, the portal. The statue is up on that mountain~.”
“Ahh, I still had to unlock it. So it’s up on a mountain, instead of in the centre.”

We’ve already taken a look at what I was most curious about, so let’s go and unlock the portal so I can teleport.
I briefly part ways with Fairellen-san, who will wait in the central area, and travel through subspace to activate the portal statue. Then I travel back through subspace to meet up again.

“There’s quite a lot on that mountain, isn’t there?”
“Right. There are the fire and ice types on the mountain.”

There’s a village of ice type Jack Frosts near the top of the mountain and what looked to be villages of Salamanders, Jack O’Lanterns and Kratesídhe a bit further down.

Let’s go look at the apples next. It’s a sightseeing trip without a plan.
The apple trees in Tir na Nog are arranged like orchards in some places, but there are also some growing sparsely elsewhere.
If they are intending to eat, they can go to one of the places where they are grown neatly and in large amounts. If it’s just on a whim, they can eat the ones growing here and there.
I can certainly see a few fruit trees within my range of view. Probably the sparse ones.
They simply look like apple trees.

“There are more apple trees than I expected?”
“There are only apples for fruit trees, so there’s only two choices of tree, apple or not.”

Apple trees or not….is it.
…Then, I wonder what that is.

“By the way, what’s that interesting plant?”
“No idea, but it looks like an apple tree that started to move, right?”
“Well, there are those like Clementia-san, so it’s not too surprising…”
“So, it looks like it’s hostile to the pigs~.”
“That’s not normal.”
“It’s going crazy!”

Apples are flying and bursting against the approaching pigs. It’s a scene that reminds me of the bombers and triffid…
…All right, let’s pretend we didn’t see that.

The fairy country has small houses to match the fairies, but there is one exception. There is a white castle, the same size as those in other countries.

“A big castle in the centre of a huge lake…that’s nice.”
“Oberon and Titania are human-sized~. And apparently it’s also that size to welcome guests from outside.”
“I see. And there’s just one long bridge leading there.”
“That’s for guests who can’t fly~.”

There are the water types, such as Nixies, and the tree type Dryads around the lake.

“It’s nice and fairytale-like.”
“Well, if it’s just the appearance, I suppose~? Pretty human-like in real life, though.”
“That might be a challenge to our romcom…”
“…Stop with the Lovecraft comedy.”
“We’re only safe because it is a comedy.”
“Well, yeah. If that side was serious, it would be a bit…”

My pleasant friends from the Medium. Their appearance is a mess. Well, I look the same, so I can’t say much about them.
If it’s not comedy, it would be like the Halloween event, so I’d like it to be comedy.

While we are chatting by the lake, three Nixies approach us fearfully.

“Did you do something to make them afraid?”
“No no, no matter how you think about it, it’s because of Princess.”

Of course.

There are apparently edible fish and shellfish in this lake, so I ask the Nixies who came over to catch some.
Fairellen-san and I see them off as the Nixies dive into the lake.

“How’s that. This is an order disguised as a request.”
“Making the most of being a person in power.”
“It’s not really worth it.”
“You don’t get to say that. I’ll go and get some apples~.”
“Five of them, please.”
“‘Kay~.”

After the Nixies return with their catch I stop them from going home, so I can cook the food for all five of us to eat together! For dessert, we’ve got the apple’s native to this country, picked by Fairellen-san.

Time to eat…! But just as we got to that point, strong gusts of wind from the lake have left everything in shambles.
I drop to my knees and Fairellen-san looks to the heavens with her hand on her forehead. The Nixies who had excitedly come out of the lake fell back in with a splash.

“What’s with this, when it was so calm until just now…”
“Was it a magic wave…from the castle?”

As if the calmness up until now was a lie, the lake is surging like the sea. The surface of the water moves as the magic power spreads out, so it’s pretty much confirmed that the cause is in the castle.
While thinking on the situation, I take a bite of an apple picked by Fairellen-san. …These apples really are delicious.

“””Are they fighting again?”””

…So that’s the first thing that comes to them.
Judging by what came to mind for the Nixies, it looks like lovers quarrels are daily occurrences.

“Well, they do say that grudges over food are scary, but what can we do.”
“They’re royalty too, aren’t they~?”
“I’m curious, so let’s go see.”
“Sounds good~.”

So we’ll go and take a look then. Let’s go to the castle.
As we fly in, child-sized servants come scurrying out in a disarrayed crowd…

“Oh? Brownies are coming out.”
“So those are Brownies. They’re cute little servants.”

As they come running out, their hair and maid uniforms are being whipped about by the magic waves that blow by regularly.
The main entrance of the castle has been opened and they are evacuating to either side of the door to escape from the raging waves of magic. The magic looks to be coming from the castle through the door and windows, so the Brownies are taking shelter to the sides of them.
…It looks like Brownies can float. After taking shelter by the windows, they are looking at the sky with an expression of accomplishment. They’re the size of children, so it gives me a bit of an indescribable feeling…

Leaving the children floating contentedly near the windows, we head for the main door.
When the brownies see us – well, mainly me – coming, they snap to attention. While avoiding the entranceway because of the raging magic power, they line up in rows. Wonderfully done.

“What’s going on here?”

After looking left and right, the Brownies quickly take a step back, leaving just one of them out front. The remaining one has a face like a space cat…
Since it ended up like this after they confirmed who was present, this is probably the one with the highest position.

“Umm…Titania-sama seems to be angry, but I don’t know why.”
“Then a lovers quarrel.”
“Maybe…”

Well, they evacuated like this because a magic wave hit while they were working…it’s not surprising if they don’t know the reason.

“Even so, this is terrible.”
“Never seen something like this~?”

“No, I haven’t. If this is what happens when a high-level… or someone with high MP gets angry, then I wonder if the people we’ve met so far have been mindful of the surroundings.”
“Niggurath and the goat~?”
“Lana and Shoggoth, too.”
“Ah, the sports day. Niggurath was called by Princess, but what about the goat?”
“Rather than angry, was it just annoyed that we came to get in the way?”
“Hm~…or maybe it’s possible that it was being mindful of the fanatics nearby~.”

They were collaborating with the goat. It’s possible.
The ones near Titania now… should be Oberon and his guards, and some servants, I would think. I don’t know if the fairy country has a Chancellor, but they should be nearby too, if so. In other words, they should be closely related. It’s a closed land, so there’s no need to be reserved!

Oh, another Brownie is coming. …Riding the magic waves. Masterfully jumping to gain distance just as the wave arrives.

“Any damage?”
“Nothing to report.”
“More importantly. …I can feel the power of Stellura-sama.”

A confirmation of the damage caused by the magic waves, is it.
This great Brownie is looking around. …Is she not aware of Nemeseia? It’s a closed environment, so the information might not have made it here. It’s quite possible.
In that case, are the reactions so far due to «The One that Reigns»? Or the power of Stellura-sama… so maybe the ‘Go’ equipment? …Or the eyes.

“I’m Nemeseia. I had a friend guide me here.”

She nods in understanding.
So? I’m curious about the reason for the quarrel.

“Oberon-sama ate the dessert that Titania-sama was looking forward to.”
“I can understand that in a normal household…”
“…There’s nothing the cooks can do to stop him.”
“”………””

As he’s the king, his food should be carried out by the Brownies. In short, the king raided the kitchen.
Both the Brownies and the cooks can’t act against the king, so even though they knew what would happen, they had no choice but to accept it.
Conclusion: The king is in the wrong.

“..Let’s go home.”
“Right…”

Titania might have a grudge over food, but so do we.
But rather than the hassle of stopping a fighting couple to complain…I’d rather just go home. It wouldn’t be worth it.
And so, after agreeing with Fairellen-san, we’re going home. Withdrawing. Even a dog won’t eat a couple’s quarrel.
I open a gate to the Starting Town and say goodbye to the Brownies.
