Chapter 18

When Sato-san, who always eats lunch with me, said something, my heart jumped even though I didn’t have a guilty conscience.

Girls, including myself, are more intuitive than others think.

“Maybe you have feelings for Inamori-kun~?”

“Ehー⁉ But he seems a bit plain…”

“Well, I don’t think he’s a good match for Tojo-san.”

I pretended to smile while holding back my mouth.

I wonder what Yoshida-san and Sato-san, who were both talking, really knew about Haruyuki-kun and me.

I’ve never considered whether or not we are a good match or if I would be good with someone else.

In fact, if I were to compare myself to Haruyuki-kun, I would even feel that I was the one who was out of balance.

I could ramble on about his charms, but that might destroy the student life I cherish so much, so I decided to keep quiet for now.

I’m afraid I might annoy Haruyuki-kun.

“… So, to begin with, Tojo-san, are you interested in love?”

“Love, you say?”

“Yes. The other day, Adachi-kun, the ace of the soccer team, confessed his love to you, didn’t he?”

Adachi…

—Oh, you mean the guy who called me behind the school building?

“It looks like she turned him down, too. I wonder if Tojo-san is thinking of going out with someone.”

“Eh⁉ That Adachi-kun⁉ He’s very popular among girls, you know⁉”

Sato-san asked, but I was too uninterested to reply.

Certainly, his face was well built and all, but, well, I didn’t feel anything more, I guess.

“It’s not that I’m not interested in romance, but… he doesn’t really suit my taste.”

“T-Then! After all, a guy like Inamori, who looks a little plain, is your type⁉”

Calling him a plain guy, Yoshida-san doesn’t understand anything about him.

No, it’s okay if she didn’t, but when you repeatedly call him plain in such a way, it really pisses me off.

I really wanted to mention his good points and make her remember them for the rest of her life, but if I did it, I might have to face an unnecessary rival, so I ought to be patient.

Aah, I feel like praising myself as a patient woman when I get to this point.

“… Well, I do find it preferable to be calm than to be flashy looking, though.”

“—I also think he has a pretty face.”

Suddenly, Shizuhara-san, who had been silently fiddling with her nails until then, mumbled something.

“Don’t ya think so? Surprisingly, Inamori has long eyelashes… He’s clean and doesn’t seem like he would cheat.”

“Whatー? Well. If you asked me, it doesn’t seem like he would.”

“I think it’s important to be faithful, right? It’s one thing to have a cool boyfriend, but I think I’d feel safer with someone like that…”

This girl… can do it.

I know that Shizuhara-san was an excellent person.

Her attitude in life seems sloppy with her blonde hair and nail polish, yet she makes elaborate homemade lunches well thought out when it comes to nutritional balance. Even when it comes to studies, I regularly see her name in the upper ranks.

I had marked her a no-go as a love rival, but I guess I will have to keep a little closer eye on her in the future.

—But the girl I trust the most is also Shizuhara-san.

To put it bluntly, I have built a relationship with Shizuhara-san to the point that we sometimes go out alone, apart from the members I usually gather with for lunch.

If I were to talk about my relationship with Haruyuki-kun, I am sure she would be the only one.

I am sorry to both of them.

But I know that Sato-san and Yoshida-san would definitely spread the word around.

They both look up to me as a friend, but they also have a slight feeling of jealousy.

I am sure they would show some concern if my reputation at school were to suffer, but I also know that they would also be pleased.

The other party being Haruyuki-kun is not the problem.

The problem was the part about starting to live together with a man.

I think that if such a story were to spread, both he and I would be subjected to uncomfortable stares. So, no matter how close I think we are, I can’t tell it to these two.

(… I’m sorry, Haruyuki-kun)

I have already told you this to some extent, but this is my ugly part.

I manage my relationships with my parents using this ‘eye for people’ that I am told to cherish, sometimes mixed with lies.

It might look a little better if I said that I could judge people around me well, but I am not qualified to do that in the first place.

And the fact that I do it even though I know it proves that it belongs to the unconscious domain and that I am that kind of person in the first place.

“… Tojo-san, what’s wrong? You’ve been grinning for a while now.”

“Eh⁉ Ah, aah… It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

“Really? If it’s nothing, then it’s fine…”

This is bad.

I had lost control of even the corners of my mouth to the point that Yoshida-san pointed it out to me.

I am sure this was due to the lack of the Haruyuki-kun ingredient.

As soon as I got home after this, I hugged Haruyuki-kun tightly―oops, I can’t.

Today he had his part-time job, didn’t he?

The convenience store where Haruyuki-kun works…

I’ll have to keep an eye on him just in case.

Oh, I’m not trying to stalk Haruyuki-kun, okay?

I’m really not.
