Chapter 19 – Barbecue

Chi Tang had never had a happy new year. For her, the Chinese new year was similar to other holidays. Most of the time, she stayed alone and played games.

But this time it was different, there was You Yu with her.

On the second day of the new year, the hard-working student You Yu carried a small stool, leaned on the coffee table, and started to work on her winter homework and when Chi Tang got out of her mobile phone to go online, she raised her head and asked her: “Are you done with your homework?”

Chi Tang: “Oh, I never do homework during Chinese New Year.”

After she finished speaking, she went back into the game. With the sound effects of the game, You Yu immersed herself in finishing her winter homework all day long.

It stood to reason that playing games were much more fun than doing homework, but You Yu was still taken away by the next homework.

She felt like she would lag if she didn’t work on her homework right away and even if she told herself that she didn’t care about the results. She still felt uncomfortable.

Chi Tang shook her legs, got up to drink water, and go to the bathroom and Chi Tang wandered around in the living room.

You Yu listened to the sound effect of her game several times before raising her head and asking her, “Are you hungry? You want me to cook?”

Before Chi Tang could speak, she packed her pen and paper, went downstairs to cook, and Chi Tang had to follow. There was no restaurant open these days. They bought some instant food and noodles to cook at home. Chi Tang cooked dumplings while You Yu took care of the noodles. She was very good at making these even if the ingredients were small. The taste was good, but it was easy to get tired of eating those every day.

After finally getting through to the seventh day, many shops in the small county where they lived were reopened. They went shopping and saw a barbecue. Chi Tang finally couldn’t help herself and said, “Let’s go out to eat late, I’ll treat you to a barbecue.”

For students, deep-fried barbecue was the most popular food, and Chi Tang liked to eat that kind of unhealthy food. When they went to the barbecue restaurant, she cooked the dishes.

For You Yu, she had never eaten those before. She looked curiously at the flames in the skewers and the long-strip charcoal stove and watched as Chi Tang kept ordering, “Stop there, we can’t finish eating so much.”

Chi Tang: “They’ll pack up if we can’t finish it.”

She insisted on ordering everything.

Most people were still at home and had not returned to work at that time. The barbecue shop that opened in advance was deserted. There were only two guests, Chi Tang and You Yu.

The aroma of the barbecue gradually dissipated, and the heat of the roast seemed to pass to them. Before the barbecue came, Chi Tang went to get two cans of beer and placed a can in front of You Yu.

You Yu hesitated, looked at the can of beer, and stopped talking.

Chi Tang thought to herself, the good student might have never had a drink.

She picked up the can of beer and opened it with a skilled and handsome gesture: “What are you afraid of, it’s only beer. Drinking a can is not intoxicating.”

You Yu: “No, this beer is iced. It’s not good to drink it so cold.”

Chi Tang couldn’t sleep warmly at night, and she had to use a warm water bag to warm her feet. How could she still dare to drink such iced beer on a cold day?

She took the can of cold beer in Chi Tang’s hand and put it in front of her, “Go and drink it at room temperature.”

When You Yu used to be at home, she drank during the Chinese New Year. The self-brewed rice wine in heer village, drinking a large bowl at a time, seemed like nothing and she was better at handling it than her cousins. She hadn’t drank this kind of beer. She took a sip, and You Yu thought to herself, this beer and water are not much different. It’s not tasteful. Why is it so expensive?

Looking at Chi Tang on the opposite side. She was carrying a can of beer at room temperature and drinking.

Plates of sizzling barbecue were brought up, Chi Tang put the duck gizzard intestines which she thought were delicious, in front of You Yu and let her taste. The taste was not as good as the barbecue restaurant in front of their school, but it was a pass. Chi Tang secretly commented.

Many students in their school would buy food at the school gate if they didn’t go home on weekends. Barbecue and frying are the most popular, and there are often people in the class sneaking them into the classroom to eat.

Chi Tang had never seen You Yu eat those snacks in front of the school. With her frugal appearance, Chi Tang thought that she must have never eaten them.

When someone else ate them, You Yu noticed them, although she quickly turned her head and refused to look at them.

You Yu felt uncomfortable at that time, it was just barbecue but she didn’t even dare to show what she wanted to eat.

Now that Chi Tang brought her to eat this barbecue, Chi Tang felt a little more comfortable, feeling that something was accomplished. They ate until it was dark, but as expected, the boss took the lunch box to pack it, and You Yu took the initiative to carry it.

Chi Tang went over to pay, and when she turned her head she saw You Yu looking over there as if she wanted to hear how much money, she glared at her and said, “What are you looking at?”

She wanted to see how much money she must pay back to her after she has earned money!

You Yu looked at Chi Tang’s fierce expression and smiled before turning her head to see how much she paid, looking down at the menu on the table and calculating the price. When Chi Tang put away the phone and came back, You Yu was done and left with her.

The two were walking down the street. Compared to the previous two days, there were more people on the street.

A supermarket on the roadside was playing music, classic nostalgic old songs, such as the song “Lotus Pond Moon”

“Puff.” Chi Tang laughed.

You Yu walked away and didn’t pay attention to why she was laughing. Just as she was about to ask, she heard the lyrics on the big loudspeaker in the supermarket sing:

“I’m like a fish~in your lotus pond~”

You Yu laughed.

When she was a few years old, she didn’t have a name. Someone from the village came to register her identity and urged her to pick a name. The rest was history, but now, the girl next to her smiled and pointed to her and said, “Yu’er .”

The fish is much better than Yu.

Chi Tang felt that the lyrics of the song “Lotus Pond Moon” were too magical so she listened to it again.

In the evening, she played music as usual to dispel the silence in the room and asked You Yu what she wanted to listen to. This time You Yu took the initiative to say the title of the song for the first time: “Put the lotus pond moon?”

Chi Tang rejected her.

“No, it has been stuck in my head since we heard it. I can’t think of other songs.”
