“I said there’s nothing to fuss about. I’m just a little hurt.”

He frowned.

Yernia slowly approached Cassian and realized it wasn’t normal.

Blood dripped from the inside of his uniform and it felt like she dropped her heart to the ground.

“Cassian. You’re bleed——”

“It’s not a big deal.”

“…….”

“You said you didn’t want me to get hurt so I tried not to get hurt as much as possible. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as I wanted.”

Yernia couldn’t speak.

The word ‘amputation’ that she heard from the doctor earlier still lingered in her ears.

She couldn’t help but think that Cassian’s arm might need it.

“Cut——”

“What?”

“I might cut it.”

Cassian’s men helped him take off his uniform so that the doctor could see it better.

There was a long and deep laceration from his shoulder to his arm.

“Let me see your wound.”

As the doctor examined Cassian, Yernia felt someone hit her on the back as she stood there in a daze.

Yernia got pushed back and fell down with her hands on the floor.

She heard the nurse’s apology over her head.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy that I didn’t notice you. Are you all right?”

Yernia was the idle one in this busy situation.

She nodded.

In fact, she couldn’t even hear her well.

A pair of boots came in front of her.

Cassian bent his knees and grabbed Yernia’s shoulder to lift her up.

“Cutting…”

She glanced up at the doctor.

The doctor coughed in bewilderment.

“We don’t have to cut it. This  minor injury doesn’t even fit the requirements.”

“That’s right,” Cassian replied casually.

“Really?”

Yernia was relieved.

“Yes. Were you scared?”

“Why wouldn’t I? I thought you had to cut off your arm.”

Yernia couldn’t bear to touch his injured arm, so she carefully brushed his other arm, instead.

“My wound isn’t that deep but you still have to treat it.”

“You should ask the nurse. I only know how to bandage.”

Fortunately, the doctor said he would do it himself.

He treated Cassian with a sullen face.

Yernia took care of another soldier, wrapping a bandage around his forehead.

Annoyed, Cassian asked the doctor quietly. “Won’t I need a bandage?”

“You don’t need to.”

“But I need one.”

“It’s not that serious.”

“I need a bandage, doctor.”

“I see.”

The doctor called Yernia.

She hurried back to Cassian when she was asked to put a bandage on him.

“Why did you get hurt?” She asked Cassian while wrapping a bandage around his arm.

“People get hurt on the battlefield even if I’m careful.”

“The Major is usually at the front line since a commander-in-chief shouldn’t be at the scene to avoid getting hurt. That’s why a major like me had to be there.”

Next to them, Cassian’s men also tried to help.

There was a man—-with hair in a rough cut—-making a fuss over Cassian’s injury a while ago.

He was probably his subordinate.

“He’s the best Esper in this Empire and he’s stronger than anyone else. I respect you, Major.” He said.

Yernia wanted to tell Cassian to stay behind the troops and not at the front lines but she held it in.

If Cassian fell back, someone else had to take over.

Still, she didn’t like how Cassian had to put his neck out in the perils of death.

“When are you going to retire, major?”

He looked at Yernia for a moment before laughing at the unexpected question.

Other people’s laughter also filled the barracks.

“Have you had enough now that you’re thinking about my retirement?”

“I’m just curious. You’re not going to retire after being like this for a long time like your father did, are you?”

Duke Vicil didn’t retire even after his wife gave birth to a child after their marriage.

When his wife passed away, he left Cassian alone and spent a longer time on the battlefield than at home.

The Duke only retired after Cassian was old enough to get used to his father’s absence.

“I wouldn’t do that to you. I don’t want to make you suffer.”

“I’m glad you have a conscience,” Yernia said calmly.

She stopped herself from telling him she would rather get hurt than see him in pain.

When she realized that Cassian was finally safe, her anxious heart regained its normal beat.

Yernia wanted to ask why he was hurt and how long it had been since she told him she was upset about it.

She should hold it in.

“I’m going to get some fresh air.”

Yernia exited the barracks to persuade herself.

Cassian tried to wave at Yernia to get her attention but she was already out.

The subordinate,  who was secretly watching Cassian, asked curiously.

“Why are you doing this, Major?”

“What?”

“You could have avoided it easily but you blocked it instead. I was surprised to see you sacrifice your arm when an Esper like you  only have to lift a finger——”

“You saw it wrong. And you! You made such a fuss earlier that Yernia got surprised.”

“You asked me to do it!”
