As his entire body trembled from the internal injuries he accumulated, someone came up behind Cassian’s back.

It was Harbin’s Esper, Captain Leward, her face hardening as she grasped the gravity of the situation.

“I’ll punish Habin, Major.”

She was Cassian’s subordinate and a friend but she was actually his rival.

Of course, Captain Leward only felt that way by herself and Cassian knew that she only wanted to climb up the ranks.

“No, I will.”

“A guide is connected to the Esper’s life. I’m not exaggerating when I say he is my lifeline. Do you intend to play with my lifeline?”

“It’s not my life, anyway. In addition to that, you don’t have any fated relationship with Habin so can’t you just find any other guides to replace him?”

Cassian was known for his outstanding abilities and ruthlessness.

He didn’t just kill enemies just once.

He would corner and play with them for a while and then he would rip them into shreds before swallowing them bit by bit.

The operation was still the same.

Whether he intended to or not, this was what the monsters would have to go through on the battlefield with him.

“Then I shall ask you. Should I leave your guide alone just because heaven was about to take mine?”

Cassian stared at Captain Leward with bloodshot eyes.

She frowned.

He was too far gone.

For the first time, she felt afraid of him.

Their operations had never failed.

Even if deaths couldn’t be helped, they only had a few casualties and no matter how difficult the battle was, their troops eventually won.

Cassian always kept his calm in the face of adversity.

Now, he was on the verge of losing his mind and he was about to run wild.

Cassian wasn’t calm at all.

He was determined to kill Habin even if he looked like he was about to fall down on his knees.

Captain Leward couldn’t say anything more.

“I’ve finished my treatment.”

The doctor wiped the cold sweat on his forehead with the back of his hand as he explained Yernia’s condition.

It wasn’t a big wound but he said she would be in a lot of pain because he didn’t have any painkillers.

He also added that she might not be able to get up for a few days because she was still in shock and she had bled a lot.

With a sigh, Cassian was relieved to hear that she was alive and unharmed as he sank into a chair.

As the chair squeaked loudly from his weight, he took another deep breath and clutched his forehead.

The doctor, Captain Ricks, Captain Reward, and the rest of the knights tactfully left the barracks and before he knew it, he was left all alone.

At some point on, the snow had swirled outside.

“Yernia.”

As he turned to look at his wife, he grabbed her drooping hand, holding her fingers as if wrapping them around, and buried his face in her hand.

He had never imagined anything like this.

He couldn’t imagine how scared Yernia must have been while he was gone or when she got stabbed in front of him.

***

Yernia’s side was on fire.

It hurt every time she moved as if someone was constantly twisting a knife on the side of her stomach.

She blinked, shuddering from the pain.

She assumed she was in a coma as she stared at the ceiling in the barracks.

‘Ah. I remember Habin stabbing me on the side.’

Despite her aching head, Yernia still managed to recall that she had been stabbed a while ago.

She saw Cassian for a moment before collapsing in front of him.

Habin is an evil——

Her harsh words were swallowed with a pained groan and Yernia suddenly caught a chill.

She turned her head to the side but there was no Cassian in sight.

Yernia stared at the empty seat for a while.

Then, she suddenly remembered her childhood due to the pain she was in.

Cassian said he would visit her every time she got sick but to Yernia’s memory, it didn’t seem like he came for her no matter how much she thought about it.

She accepted his apology in the past with the assumption that Cassian would no longer disappoint her.

But when she saw that he wasn’t by her side again this time, she couldn’t help but feel emotional.

Yernia was sick.

When she was young. it was Ivan, Yernia’s brother, who nursed her to good health.

The Count and Countess were busy, so Ivan had to take care of her in their parent’s place.

Seria often watched from the sidelines while Ivan did all the work.

One time, Yernia’s body felt as hot as a fireball, the boiling heat making her gasp.

At that time, her parents set their work aside and gave her a lot of attention.

Even then, Cassian didn’t come to see if she was alright.

“I don’t know what to do if you’re this sick, Yernia.”

It was something someone had said when Yernia’s fever dropped a little.

The voice she heard in her sleep probably belonged to her brother.

She was certain it was male and his voice wasn’t as thick as her father’s.

Cassian didn’t come to see her at that time so it must be Ivan who said it.

“Get well soon, Yena.”

Besides,  her brother was the only one who would pat her head gently and press his lips against her sweaty forehead.

Cassian, you bastard!

She was still having a fever and she felt sad that no one was there next to her.

Yernia missed Ivan very much.

It was getting hard to keep her eyes open.

Her body felt heavy,  her icy mood had already sunk to the bottom and her stomach hurt so bad that it drove her insane.

Yernia’s eyes fell shut.
