Chapter 83 The prayer ceremony (1)

Chen Hui’s head was full of the various documentaries that she had watched before she time-traveled and the publications about the peculiar customs of those strange tribes. For a moment, she felt like she was done for. If there were any strange customs, she would never do it! If it really comes to that point, she will…she will confess that she is Li Youde’s and think of a way to let them exchange her for some benefits from Li Youde! As for whether they would be willing or not, whether Li Youde would be willing or not, those were beyond her control.

Chen Hui followed princess Yatai outside the tent laden with anxiety. Along the way, people kept greeting princess Yatai. She even saw the man who had slept with princess Yatai, but princess Yatai didn’t treat him much special. She nodded and left. The man also didn’t have a disappointed look. They presumably have the relationship of each takes what the one needed.

Chen Hui didn’t have the time to think much about it. In front of her, there was an altar that she hasn’t seen when she came. The altar was made of wood and about two meters above the ground. The altar was about the size of a room. There was nothing on it at the moment.

Princess Yatai asked Chen Hui to wait in place. She returned after leaving for a while with a woven wreath in her hand.

“Hold it,” Princess Yatai said.

“Oh,” Chen Hui nodded. She still could do something as holding something.

Princess Yatai asked Chen Hui to wait again and left.

Chen Hui had nothing to do. She stood there somewhat overcautious and looked as princess Yatai approached a middle-aged man. The man wasn’t dressed much differently from the other men, except that his clothes had more fabric and fur. She didn’t know what princess Yatai said to him. He glanced at Chen Hui from time to time. Chen Hui’s heart was pounding with nervousness, but she didn’t dare to look over there.

Princess Yatai came back after a while. She smiled, “My father agreed.”

“Agreed to what?” Chen Hui asked.

Princess Yatai said, “When the sacrifice begins, you will go up with me and you will be the goddess.”

“…What?” Chen Hui looked surprised. Wasn’t she just an onlooker? What is the situation that she had suddenly become the esteemed guest?!

Princess Yatai smiled, “In the past, the prayer dance was composed of one male and one female. The female is the goddess and the male is a human. The male would perform the sacrificial rites to the goddess with a prayer dance in order to win the favor and grace of the goddess. This year I will perform the sacrificial rite. The goddess is still the goddess. No one in my tribe is more fair-skinned than you. It is the best that you are the goddess.”

“…Fair-skinned?” Chen Hui was almost dumbstruck. What kind of reason was this?

Princess Yatai said as a matter of course, “The legend said that the skin of the goddess is as fair as the moonlight. Of course, you are the most suitable. It isn’t difficult. I will dance around you for a while. You don’t need to do anything. When I kneel in front of you, you just put the wreath on me and the sacrificial ceremony will be completed.”

“…Can I refuse?” Chen Hui asked.

Princess Yatai didn’t seem to expect that Chen Hui would refuse. She said in surprise, “This is the highest honor of the Xi tribe. Do you really want to refuse?”

Chen Hui was speechless. She and they didn’t have the same culture. Standing on such a high platform and being watched by so many people, was simply an act of shame!

“If you don’t want to, then, there is no other way,” Princess Yatai said regretfully, “You can only be tied up.”

Chen Hui felt relieved when she heard the first half. When she heard the second half, she quickly said, “No, I want to! I just asked…”

Princess Yatai smiled, “Good, come with me. The sacrifice will begin soon.”

Princess Yatai led Chen Hui to a tent not far away. As soon as she entered, she found out that there was still one person inside. It was a woman about thirty- or forty-year-old. Seeing princess Yatai come in, she respectfully saluted her and then the two of them began to whisper to each other.

Chen Hui didn’t understand. She could only boredly observe the surroundings. There were some earthen jars on the ground in front of her. Inside the jars, there were some colorful oily liquids that looked like paint.

…It isn’t what she was thinking about, right?

As soon as that thought emerged in Chen Hui’s head, she was pressed onto a stool by princess Yatai who had finished speaking. After that, the woman walked out, picked up a small brush stained with something unknown that was yellow and wiped it on Chen Hui’s face.

Chen Hui dodged subconsciously, but she was held down by princess Yatai. She said, “Don’t move.”

Although princess Yatai didn’t explain anything, Chen Hui didn’t dare to move because of the other party’s imposing manner. Of course, she could guess it. Wasn’t this drawing some patterns on her face as she had seen on TV?!

The knowledgeable Chen Hui stared in front of her as the woman messed on her face and thought, this was equivalent to covering her face with a mask, which will make her feel less shameful.

Seeing that Chen Hui was quiet and not struggling, princess Yatai also let go of her and watched from a side with her hand crossed over her chest.

The woman painted Chen Hui’s face quickly and let Chen Hui’s face dry on the side while she went to deal with princess Yatai.

Chen Hui couldn’t see what she looked like now without a mirror. She also didn’t have much interest. Anyway, she couldn’t have been painted into a “goddess”. Princess Yatai seemed to be almost finished.

There were several patterns and colors painted on princess Yatai’s face. Those flamboyant colors and brush strokes coupled with her valiant looks made her even more imposing.

Suddenly, a peculiar drumbeat could be heard outside, followed by the low sound of a horn. In this melodious and mysterious soundtrack, princess Yatai led Chen Hui out of the tent.

There was long a dense mass of people in a circle outside. However, no one spoke. There was only silence. When they saw princess Yatai appear, they looked over. Those gazes were uniform; they were all enthusiastic and respectful. They opened a passage in front of them (CH&Y). Princess Yatai and Chen Hui walked forward and finally reached the altar. Princess Yatai motioned for Chen Hui to step on the steps that they had built at the last moment. She had no choice but to stand those scorching eyes and walk step by step to the center of the altar.

Princess Yatai circled around the altar with peculiar steps. Every step was echoed with music. After three circles, she suddenly climbed onto the edge of the altar and climbed up vigorously.

Only until now did Chen Hui relax a bit. Princess Yatai had not been climbing up that she almost thought that they were going to burn her to death!

As soon as princess Yatai came up, she danced around Chen Hui while she was muttering something. Her dance moves were sometimes soft, sometimes robust. Her eyes did not leave Chen Hui most of the time. She rotated around Chen Hui with a humble attitude and prayed fervently with expectations.

Although princess Yatai said that she didn’t need to do anything, Chen Hui’s eyes moved unconsciously with princess Yatai’s movements. She was like a goddess who finally saw the prayers of human beings. The sound of music continued. The grand and majestic music was like a heroic narrative of a poem, telling the history, the fear of humans, reverence, curiosity and exploration…everything was told in the music. It silently spread in the powerful body language of human beings. The humans crawled under the feet of the gods, offering everything just for a glimpse of the goddess’ mercy.
