01. SECOND-TIME SISTERS WANT TO BE STRANGERS INSTEAD

Auld Loehr Vahan from the Vahan Duke house and his late wife Bellerose’s marriage was a political one. It was a marriage basically brought about forcibly that his wife Bellerose strongly wanted.

Even so, Duke Auld desperately tried to love his wife. Even if it was forced and political, he tried for the reason that they will become family.

However, that sentiment did not last.
The reason is Bellerose’s arrogance and over-possessiveness.

Soft, light gray hair, unforgettable strong eyes. His height-toned build is perfected beauty that will captivate anyone.
It is perhaps natural providence that several women would be attracted to him at social gatherings, and Bellerose was one of them. Captivated by Auld, she used all the power she has to obtain the status to be his wife.
She can marry the man she loved. Loveless marriages are not uncommon among nobles, so it was an enviable outcome for anyone.

However, Bellerose was not satisfied by just that.

She wants Auld to love her. There is nothing wrong with that so far. Anyone in love would wish for that.
The problem is the actions she took.
She cannot forgive any woman who approaches him. She shows no mercy even to servants and work colleagues.
That gradually escalates to the point where she repeatedly interrogates Auld, who is faithful to her and serious about work,  almost every day.

──Who were you with?
──I was working.
──You’re lying! You went to some woman’s place, didn’t you?!

I know everything. Why? Why can’t it be me? Why won’t you love me? Look at me and me alone.  I won’t forgive you if we separate! I won’t forgive you! I won’t forgive you!
I won’t let you love anyone other than me.

It was only natural that Auld became tired of that life, that what little sentiment he had for their family disappeared, and that he was captivated by the woman who praised and supported him.
For nobles, having concubines is not unusual. There is nothing wrong with it. There are those who are not blessed with an heir with their lawful wife, and so they seek an heir from a young concubine.
There are those who had political marriages and take the one they truly love as their concubine.
There are those who are not satisfied with only one woman.
There are those who love several women at the same time.
Each has their own reason. So long as one can provide for every other woman he takes in other than his wife, then each family should responsibly and respectively come in terms with it.

You could say that the Vahan family is the worst case.

Bellerose, whose obsession with Auld grows stronger every day, will definitely not allow a concubine. On the other hand, Auld flees from his wife who fiercely hounds him and spends his time with his concubine.
In the midst of that worst cycle, Bellerose bore a child at a timing that makes one think that it is God’s prank.

That child is Violette Rem Vahan.

Light gray hair and round eyes like that of a kitten’s. She is a lovely child that is unmistakably Auld’s.
Bellerose rejoiced at Violette’s birth.
All would agree that she looks just like the man she loved. As long as we have this child, Auld will return to me. As long as I have Violette and Auld’s connection, I will be able to get him back, too.
“This child is my hope.” Twisted as it may be, Bellrose certainly loved her daughter.

Long story short, this will end without any of her schemes coming true.

Not a single fragment of Auld’s sentiment towards Bellerose remains. And although he knows that their child did nothing wrong, the melancholy of meeting Bellerose triumphs.
As long as she has her mother and servants, she will be taken care of. While continuously making excuses, he was blessed with a child with his concubine.
It is hardly surprising that he eventually settled in with his concubine. From Violette’s perspective, however, this doesn’t change the fact that he is the worst.

Because of her husband’s actions, Bellerose’s jealousy would continuously grow twisted over the years. Until her life comes to an end.

At first, she managed to live on with just her love for Violette’s face. She never let her face be wounded or sunburned, and simply left her by her side. The same face as the person she loved─she treasured and cherished the proof that he made love to her, believing that Auld will return one day.

However, Bellerose lost patience with Auld who wouldn’t come back no matter how much time passed.
The way she saw Violette gradually changed. Bellerose tore all her fancy clothes, cut her long hair, and so the practically-androgynous young girl changed into a young boy in no time.
Just like young Auld in his albums.

She began projecting her husband onto her beautiful daughter and eventually started to demand not just looks but also boyish behaviors from her. Instead of learning the manners and etiquette of noble ladies, she was taught weapon-wielding techniques and the art of self-defense. She sought the same amount of knowledge Auld has from her─no more, no less. She kept telling her that she must be the same as him.

Bellerose’s abnormal behavior will end around the time Violette’s feminine features cannot be hidden anymore.
No matter how much she looks like Auld, the gender gap will definitely appear. If her features and even her build develops, then she would not be the Violette that Bellerose wants.

Bellerose easily lost interest in Violette who cannot become Auld.

It simply crumbles from there.
Bellerose only needed Violette who she created according to Auld’s image. She never talked to the servants, and Violette stopped coming into her view when she became feminine. Violette does not remember when her mother’s illness which she feigned to get Auld’s attention became real.
Until the end, until the moment her life came to an end, Auld was the only one in Bellerose’s heart.
She loved Violette only because she believed she will connect her with Auld’s heart. Because she thought she would become an existence like Auld. If not, then she has no need for her. Violette still has dreams about the day she was easily cast away.

Ignoring Violette who was struggling to find closure, Auld gave the status of the legal wife to his concubine as if it was natural.

× × × ×

I would rather not remember what happens after, but it was dreadful.

Feeling hatred for my stepmother, half-sister and even my father, I would commit a crime and end up in prison. I feel most apologetic to Maryjun, who I hurt the most, that it makes me want to die. I might as well prostrate myself to her now. She would probably think I have gone mad.

I have no room for excuses for the crime I committed… But recalling my life once more made me realize that it was more oppressive than I thought.

At the time it was about my family, about my mother. It didn’t bother me as I believed our family circumstances were typical… Even so, because I was utterly mentally devastated, I must have been hurting subconsciously.
That said, it was clearly misdirected anger.

———-

“Lady Violette, are you alright?”

“Yes… I’m only a bit tired.”

“I shall bring hot milk. It will calm you down.”

Violette’s personal maid Marin felt indescribable displeasure towards her mistress’ weary expression. Not towards Violette of course, but towards Violette’s father Auld, the reason for that gathering as well as the one who provided the opportunity for such.

After that, she managed to feign calmness and return, and their gathering ended without mishaps… At least it should have.

Violette’s civility still remains a bit of a concern, but her natural facial features should be taken into consideration. Her father who has the same facial features should be in no position to complain and overlooking that shouldn’t incur them divine punishment.

“Haah…”

After confirming that Marin left the room to prepare hot milk, she heaved a heavy sigh as if to let out her exhaustion.
She doesn’t know how this happened and probably won’t, so she decided not to think about it. The problem is what she should do from now on.

It is no exaggeration to say that Violette was given this new chance so that she won’t become a criminal. Considering other advantages is unnecessary. For Violette, the fact that her crime disappeared is the most vital point.

Of course, even if no one in this world knows about the crime she once committed, that crime is deeply engraved in Violette’s heart and will not disappear. That is why she strongly, strongly wants to avoid making mistakes this time.

Violette has already made a decision.

She will cut ties with them after graduation, and become and live as a nun to express her gratitude to the God who gave her this chance. That is the future Violette, who has been bestowed a path to a new future, wishes for.

She doesn’t have to be loved. She doesn’t have to be cherished.
Nothing good will come of obsessing with such matters. Violette learned that the hard way. The words of someone who has experienced it ought to be deeply engraved in her heart. Especially if that person is her past self.

Ordinarily and plainly, she will live and die alone.
To achieve that, she must first decide on how she would treat Maryjun, who will be coming to the same campus soon. Her past self showed aggressiveness in the worst possible way, but the current Violette will do the exact opposite: She will not involve herself with her.

It is a fact that she repented inside that prison cell. She feels terrible about what she had done to Maryjun, and she thinks she’s wonderful for showing clemency to her assailant.

So this time around, she does not want to bother anyone and do something that would cast a shadow on Maryjun’s life. She sincerely wishes for her happiness.

However, if asked if this means she will come to love Maryjun, then the answer is no.

Every feeling she has for her comes not from love but from guilt. She wishes that Maryjun will become happy somewhere she does not know of without associating herself with her.

“Lady Violette, I have brought your milk for you.”

“Thank you, Marin… Ah, this is warm.”

The cup she has her hands wrapped around, like the milk in it, is slightly warm. Her stiff shoulders loosened up, and that made Violette realize for the first time that she was nervous.

(A lot of things are going on all of a sudden…)

She thought she was imprisoned but then time rewound. Her mother hasn’t been gone for long, yet all of a sudden a stepmother and a half-sister was being introduced to her.

They say that life has its ups and downs, but she never thought she’d go through both in one day. She feels complicated that she cannot completely say this was an unlucky day.

“…It seems I really am tired. I’ll retire for the night.”

“I shall help you get changed, then.”

“I’ll do it myself… I’m sorry, I want to be alone.”

“Certainly.”

I want to be alone, grasp the current situation and come up with a countermeasure. Though I don’t want to involve myself with them, we are going to be sisters who bear the same name.

Violette finished her hot milk, turned her back towards Marin, who was bowing down, and disappeared to her bedroom.
