Chapter 29: Harvest Wheat Part 1 (1) Original translation is from tenderflower's blog.

The dinner was spent in silence. The Shu family did not dare to say anything for fear of making Xiao Lang sad.

“Aunt, are you going to harvest wheat too?” Xiao Lang was not used to such a tense atmosphere. In his impression, the Shu family was always filled with warmth. He didn’t want to destroy the feeling that made him nostalgic because of himself.

Qin-shi showed a faint smile nervously: “Yes, we’re going to the field tomorrow. Will Ah Lang help me watch Ah Lan pick wheat ears?” Find something for him to do, so he wouldn’t always think about sad things.

Shu Lan was scooping up water to drink when she heard Qin-shi’s words. She suddenly choked. Her face flushed from coughing and looked at Qin-shi with an aggrieved expression. Really, she had helped coax him to come back for dinner. Why did her mother want him to be with her? It was not like she couldn’t pick wheat ears!

Xiao Lang finally showed his first smile after the loss of his father. He stood up and wanted to touch Shu Lan’s head. When he saw her mouth pouting and turning her head to dodge, he chased after her and then said: “Aunt, let Sister Wan look after Ah Lan. I’ll help you pluck the wheat.”

In Qingshan Village, as long as their daughters were 15 years old, parents usually did not let them go to work in the fields for fear that they would be tanned by the sun and wouldn’t look good when married. Shu Zhan’s autumn exam was just around the corner. Qin-shi refused to let him stay at home to help and asked her husband to send him back to the town overnight. Qin-shi did not want to trouble her parents’ family with this kind of thing, so the husband and wife could only be busy. With so much land, the filial Shu Wan would definitely start plucking wheat. Xiao Lang wanted Shu Wan to relax and marry well.

Qin-shi was cleaning the pot with her back to Xiao Lang when she heard this and tears fell suddenly. She wiped them quietly. After she calmed down a little, she put down the pot-scrubbing brush in her hand. She turned to Xiao Lang and said: “Ah Lang, come with me. Aunt has something to tell you.” She went straight to the backyard.

Xiao Lang heard her tone was very solemn and immediately followed.

Shu Lan blinked, moved quietly to the back door, and listened attentively. What was her mother going to whisper to the evil wolf, so she wouldn’t let her know?

Shu Wan came in from the front yard and saw her younger sister’s cat-like thief there. She smiled helplessly. She turned around and noticed the pot had not been cleaned, so she picked up the pot-scrubbing brush and got busy. If there were nothing wrong, Ah Lang would live in their house in the future. Fortunately, the year before last year, her father expanded an inner room on both sides. The one on the east side was reserved for storage, and the one on the west side was for her younger brother alone. Now her younger brother was not at home, so they could give it to Ah Lang. Oh, no, let them move their sisters into the inner room. It was easier to get in and out. Thinking of this, Shu Wan cleaned up the kitchen and went in to move the bedding.

In the backyard, Qin-shi said to Xiao Lang in a soft voice: “Ah Lang, you and Ah Lan grew up together. You are smart and sensible. Your uncle and I have always treated you as our own son. Now that your father is gone, your aunt does not have the heart to see you alone. If you don’t dislike it, how about being a godson of your aunt? In the future, you will live and eat here. It will be considered a companion for Ah Lan.”

She originally wanted to recognize Xiao Lang as her son, but her husband was right. Although the adopted son was closer, he would have to change his surname. Shouwang only had such a son, how could he change his surname? Therefore, she had no choice but to recognize him as her godson. These were names for others to see only. She treated Xiao Lang as her own.

After Xiao Lang heard this, the first thought that popped into his mind was that if he and the lazy girl became siblings, he would not be able to marry her. Although, he really wanted to live with the Shu family.

Not daring to look at Qin-shi’s eyes directly, he lowered his head and whispered: “Aunt, I know you are good to me, but I really can’t call...”

Qin-shi didn’t expect to get such a reply. After a brief period of daze, she hugged Xiao Lang and said: “Poor child, if you can’t call then don’t call. Aunt won’t make it difficult for you. You can live here with peace of mind.” His father had just passed away. It was her thoughtlessness to ask a deeply affectionate child to call others father and mother.

Smelling the familiar faint fragrance, Xiao Lang’s nose was inexplicably sour. He wanted to nod to agree, but he told him rationally that he had his own home. If he moved to Shu’s house without a name, others would gossip, unless... he had a reason to move in.

Shu Lan, who was eavesdropping behind the door, only felt her little heart beating non-stop as if it would jump out the next moment. Mother was so... so partial. How could she ask that evil wolf to move in? She wouldn’t have time to hide from him. If he was allowed to live under the same roof as her, she was afraid she wouldn’t sleep well! And that evil guy Xiao Lang will definitely take this opportunity to stay!

Shu Lan thought angrily. She could already foresee her tragic life in the future.

But just when she was very sure, she suddenly heard Xiao Lang refuse in a low and hoarse voice: “Aunt, I still want to live in our house...”

Immediately afterward, a figure ran past her like a gust of wind.

Shu Lan stared blankly at Xiao Lang’s back. At the same time, as she was relieved, there was a little bit of heartache for him. It turned out he was so reluctant to give up their house!

The next morning, Xiao Lang came over early, completely relieving Qin-shi, who had been worried all night. She was really afraid Xiao Lang had a lump in his heart and did not want to come again.

The whole family set off neatly to the wheatfield.

In summer, even in the early morning, the sun was bright and dazzling. Qin-shi and the others put on straw hats for sunshade early, but the sun shone sideways, and the underside of the eyes was still illuminated. Before walking a few steps, sweat flowed down her temples.
