This is caused by a nuclear explosion taking place up in the atmosphere; the moment it exploded, a burst of electromagnetic radiation was created.
The resulting rapidly varying electric and magnetic fields met with electrical and electronic systems produced damaging current and voltage surges.
In simple terms, an EMP was created.
And the moment that happened, all electrical devices in Japan and many neighboring countries were immediately fried—turning obsolete.
Normally, that wouldn't have been possible considering that the range of an EMP is closely related to the blast radius of the nuke which is far from enough to cover all of japan and some neighboring countries as it did just now.
However, now is the apocalypse; and the world itself wants humans dead.
So the moment the bomb went off in the atmosphere, some 'aid' was given by the world allowing the effect to expand way beyond its normal possible range.

Device after device, any and all electronic apparatuses were fried; even those that would normally withstand such an event weren't spared because of the 'boost' given by the world.
Of course, this sudden event caused a lot of survivors to be unlucky; and such an example is the Takagi Estate.
There, the moment the EMP swept over, a chain reaction occurred as overall confusion quickly ensued.
The computers and phones that were being used for communication and intel gathering suddenly shut down; All vehicles also stopped working; There was even some unlucky guy that had a pacemaker who suddenly fell down, his heart, stopping.
But all of that was just the beginning of the chaos.
As a consequence of the confusion caused by the sudden outage, zombies suddenly attacked and were able to break through the defense line.
"Ahh!!!"
"The barricade!" Cried a man who was running for his life.
This sudden scream quickly attracted the attention of those who were standing in the front yard.
"Don't follow me!"
"Don't follow me!" Yelled the same man as he turned around the moment he reached the gate and started shooting his gun at the zombies.
Taking a couple of shots; he then turned around again wanting to run; but this time, it appears that he is unlucky as he was suddenly caught from behind by two zombies.
"AH!!!"
"AH!!!"
"NOOO!!!!"
All of this happened under the eyes of the defense team who quickly ran towards the gate to close them off after receiving the order from the commander.
"Quickly! Close the gate!" ordered the man who seemed in charge.
*Slam*
*Clang*
Seeing the gate getting closed, the man then turned his head toward the group of four who were standing behind him.
This man is Saya's father, called Souichiro Takagi; and the four standing who were standing behind him are Saya, Komuro, Rei, and Hirano.
It appears that even with the changes caused by Lorien, this group was still somewhat able to make it here.
Moreover, it seems that the humvee given to them by Lorien also allowed them to make it there much faster than they did in the original timeline.
"Commander, Madam. I have brought your weapons." Said one of the guards as he ran towards Souichiro and Yuriko.
Taking the weapons; Saya's mother then handed one to her daughter as she spoke.
"Use this Saya-chan."
"I don't know how to use this thing! and why do you even have a gun?!"
"I attended an executive self-defense course while I was working at wall street. I might even be a better shot than your father."
Saying this, she then turned her head toward Hirona and said.
"You'll teach her how to shoot, right, Hirano-kun?"
"Yes, Ma'am!"
*Clang*
"RAGGGGGHHHHHH!!"
"RAAAGHHH!!!"
Suddenly, hearing the noise coming from the gate, everyone turned their attention toward it.
*Clinnn*
It appears that this herd of zombies became too much for the gate to handle as it started creaking and looked like it was about to give in.
*BOOM*
"RAAAAAAAAGHHH!!"
Suddenly, The gate was ripped out of its position as zombies quickly swarmed in under the ghastly eyes of everyone present.
"Commander! Escape!" Yelled one of the loyal guards who was closest to the gate as he was being eaten.
"Get back!"
Seeing the zombies break in, chaos quickly ensued as all the survivors quickly began running disorderly.
As for the guards; they were trying to stop the zombies with all their strength, this included Komuro's group of four.
"There is no end to them."
"No kidding!"
"The longer this gets dragged on, the worse it gets."
"We...We should have stayed at that base..."
"IT'S NOT TIME FOR THIS!"
*Boom*
As they were fighting, everyone seemed to unconsciously group up at the estate's front door where the commander was situated.
"Commander, I checked from the 2nd floor; The people we deployed to the neighboring area are yet to be attacked; we may be able to retake the gate."
Hearing this, Souichiro fell silent for a moment before responding resolutely.
"We shall break through this mob and head to the neighboring area! Men who have the will to fight, assemble! Women and children who wish to live, gather in the back!"
Hearing his decision, the first to respond was his daughter Saya.
"Papa, if we barricade ourselves in the house-"
But just as she spoke, the man interrupted her.
"The is no meaning in protecting the house! The iron gate was run down! Even if we stay in the house, they'll just force their way in and we'll be eaten!"
Saying this, he then turned his head toward the burning yard in front of him as he spoke to Komuro.
"Komuro—Falter not! Embark on your own path!"
"Yes!"
"Hirano, I am entrusting my daughter to you."
"PAPA!"
*Slap*
But just as Saya yelled, her mother suddenly grabbed her and gave her a slap.
"Mama?"
"Souichiro and I have a duty to perform; It is our selfish desire as your parents to leave you in their hands; Please don't make this any harder than it already is."
"Mama..."
"Now...GO!" Shouted Yuriko at their small group.
"Mama...Papa...I love you."
This was the last phrase Saya left as she ran with the other three under her parent's watchful eyes as tears filled her eyes.
Seeing this, Souichiro's eyes turned resolute as he then looked away and towards the zombies.
"Now..."
"THROW THE DYNAMITE!!"
