Chapter 1

“WANG RUOYAN’S LIFE HANGS BY A THREAD AFTER BLOCKING KNIFE FOR SHENG JR.!”

“THOUSANDS OF FANS GATHER TO PRAY FOR WANG RUOYAN AT HOSPITAL!”

“WANG RUOYAN: A LIVING SYMBOL OF KINDNESS, BEAUTY, STRENGTH AND COURAGE!”

“WANG RUOYAN: AN ANGEL DESCENDED TO EARTH!”

WANG RUOYAN: SHENG JR’s HEAVENSENT MATCH!”

“Look! Just look at this! The media’s praised Wang Ruoyan to the high heavens by now. What ‘heavensent match’ for Sheng Jr.? Why weren’t you the one to block the knife for him? All three of you were kidnapped, but why didn’t you do anything to win Sheng Jr.’s heart?!

“These people make sense. If I was Sheng Zhiming (盛至明), I’d pick Wang Ruoyan (王若妍) over you too. But you’re supposed to be closer to him, yet you got overshadowed by an outsider! Look at you, craven and scared of death. That’s definitely not true love.”

The woman dressed in a white suit paced back and forth in the hospital room as she fretted.

“……” said Ye Wei (叶薇).

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Ye Wei? Why are you still eating? What time do you think it is now? You can still stuff yourself?”

“Oh, I’m a little hungry,” Ye Wei explained. “Sister Liu, don’t panic.”

Sister Liu was Ye Wei’s agent, full name Liu Jia (刘佳). She had been in charge of Ye Wei ever since her debut.

Liu Jia only lamented that Ye Wei was iron that couldn’t turn into steel. “You still know to be hungry at a time like this?”

“….being hungry is a normal physiological reaction. Why wouldn’t I know it?” Ye Wei cradled her chicken soup and took another sip, then munched on a piece of Chinese yam that had been boiled tender in the stew.

Liu Jia could only see stars in her vision. “Enough, stop eating.”

“…alright,” Ye Wei couldn’t help compromising. She stopped drinking the soup, but didn’t let go of the bowl.

“…..” Liu Jia paced back and forth, on the edge of a breakdown. “Why weren’t you the one who blocked the knife ahhhh?! It’d be great if that was you!”

Ye Wei was stunned. Am I that great and selfless in Liu Jia’s eyes? She seems so disappointed.

No, I can’t let it go on like this.

“Why do I have to block the knife for Sheng Zhiming?” Ye Wei piped up.

“Why?!” Liu Jia exclaimed, “Are you a fool?! If it was you, then you’d be getting all the attention right now! And your place in Sheng Jr.’s heart will change, and you’d earn the gratitude of the Sheng family. From then on, you’d never have to worry about resources again. Let me ask you, would you block the knife if you had a second chance?”

“I wouldn’t,” Ye Wei replied.

“I knew you’d…wouldn’t? Why not?!”

Because she was the supporting female. Things like blocking a knife weren’t part of the job, so she couldn’t very well steal the female lead’s thunder. She wouldn’t do it even if she wasn’t a supporting female character, especially after seeing the blade stab into the female lead’s shoulder and all the blood that flowed out. It was a terrifying sight.

“I don’t want to, I’m afraid of pain and death. What if I died?”

“Didn’t Wang Ruoyan survive just fine?”

“I’m not Wang Ruoyan.”

“….” Liu Jia actually had no retort. Feeling odd, she asked, “Why do I feel like you’re in a great mood?”

…she noticed that too? I thought I was hiding it super well.

At this point in the story, her role as the villainous supporting female was just about over. She could withdraw from the frontlines and go back to get her salary, so why wouldn’t she be happy? Ask anyone off the street if they’d be happy to get their pay and go on holiday? Not only that, she also got a chance to draw a random cheat, things like a personal dimensional storage space, a red packet, a beautifying system, scientific system, traditional Chinese medicine system, etc. Ye Wei desperately wanted the traditional Chinese medicine system but had failed to get it in multiple tries. With her task on the cusp of being done, it’d be strange if she wasn’t thrilled.

“I’m not, you’re making things up. I’m almost vexed to death right now,” Ye Wei tightened her grip on the soup bowl and gnashed her teeth. “Hmph, don’t you worry. I won’t let that Wang Ruoyan off. Does she think everything will go her way just because she blocked a knife for Sheng Jr.? There’s a ton of people who’d be willing to do the same thing, so she’s nothing special.”

Liu Jia’s mouth twitched before silently agreeing with the naysayers who said Ye Wei was brainless. “Can’t you think a bit more? If there really were plenty of people, why didn’t you block it? You’re supposed to be Sheng Jr.’s bedmate!”

“I won’t, I’m afraid of dying,” Ye Wei replied.

“……” said Liu Jia. She seriously has no brains. Doesn’t she know about no pain, no gain?

Bang!

The door to the room was soundly kicked open. Liu Jia whirled around in alarm, while even Ye Wei was startled. The bowl in her hands shook and nearly spilled over. By the entrance stood a man who was none other than Sheng Zhiming! Behind him was his assistant wearing an expression of ridicule. It was obvious he had overheard their conversation.

Liu Jia glanced between Sheng Zhiming and Ye Wei. His complexion looked ghastly, so it was likely he’d caught them talking. She wanted to box herself on the ears for asking all those questions. We’re doomed doomed doomed. Why did this ancestor suddenly show up?! I was blocked at the door every other time I tried to call on him.

As expected, Ye Wei mused, The villainous supporting female can’t say things behind people’s backs, because she’ll always expose her true cowardly, death-fearing side.

The man was 188cm tall and dressed in a simple undershirt and long pants. He had a powerful aura and the wound on his face did nothing to detract from his features. Instead, it made him look more wild and unrestrained. Those dark eyes shone with a dangerous light that simultaneously warned one to flee while drawing one closer. Currently, he was wearing an ugly expression, icy cold and predatory. He looked askance at Ye Wei, as if waiting for her to keep babbling.

“….” said Ye Wei. Finally, she sprawled to the side of the bed and said quickly, “Zhiming, don’t misunderstand. I didn’t mean it that way, so don’t misjudge, ah…”

“Didn’t mean it in what way?” the man asked frostily. “Heh.”

“It’s true, really. Believe me!”

“Then what did you mean? You’d block the knife for me?” Sheng Zhiming asked.

Liu Jia rejoiced as she looked expectantly towards Ye Wei. Hurry up and say you’re willing, that you would, ah!

“…urk,” Ye Wei trailed off.

“Heh,” Sheng Zhiming replied.

Liu Jia forced her face into a smile. “So it’s Sheng Jr., ah. You must have come to see our Wei Wei. The doctor says Wei Wei’s injuries have gotten much better, she was only too frightened and needs time to soothe her spirits. Not only that, she’d been worrying about you to the point where she can’t even eat. These past few days, she’s shed a few pounds.”

The handsome man gave a cold laugh. “She looks perfectly fine to me!”

Sheng Zhiming and Ye Wei had been together for a while. Although his heart wasn’t set on this woman, he had always been exceptionally sensitive to other people’s feelings. If he wasn’t mistaken, Ye Wei’s face didn’t show a speck of worry or fear. She didn’t care about his safety or feared that he’d be angry. Instead, her cheeks had even turned rosier after a few days in the hospital.

Heh. You have the gall to say she cares about me like this?

“Trust me, I really am worried about you! I don’t want you to die!” Ye Wei exclaimed, then asked, “Are you mad at me?”

The beautiful, voluptuous woman sitting on the bed was radiating loveliness. Despite wearing no makeup, her features looked even more delicately charming, weak, and tender. Her pretty eyes gazed at him with a sincerity that shook Sheng Zhiming for a second, because it was too genuine; he couldn’t see a speck of hypocrisy there, though it just made the whole thing more like a sham. He thought of Ye Wei’s curt “I won’t” as his eyes froze into a chilling glance. Even the assistant by his side felt anxious and subtly shifted on his feet.

As if he couldn’t bother to comment, Sheng Zhiming gave a cold laugh before turning to leave. Liu Jia saw that everything was going wrong and hastened after him, pleading and offering explanations. But she didn’t even earn a look and was stopped at the door by his bodyguards, then forced back into the room by the assistant.

Liu Jia was both furious and fretful. What a great chance that was! If Ye Wei had said she was willing, the results would be different now.

She dragged her heels back to the hospital room, only to see Ye Wei licking her oil-stained lips. Her eyes glanced at the soup bowl, which was now completely empty! Not a speck of soup remained as she’d eaten it clean!

Badump.

“Ye Wei!! You should quit the entertainment circle!!!”

“…..” said Ye Wei. That’s true, it was about time for her to get lost. She wouldn’t stop it either, because her only goal in this life was to complete the mission and leave.

Moreover, Wang Ruoyan had the female lead halo around her, so she wouldn’t even die from a stab wound. Instead, it’d give birth to a loyal love between her and the male lead. But she was a different case. As a villainous supporting female plagued with the supporting female halo, she would always be caught doing bad deeds to serve as a foil to the female lead’s kindness, sincerity, and beauty. If she really tried to block a knife, she’d probably die. Furthermore, how could any supporting female who hankered after the male lead think of sacrificing her own interests for the sake of others? She wouldn’t do anything that was out of character.

Currently, Ye Wei was playing the part of a villainous supporting female. In her last life, she had ended in a vegetative state after a car crash. Although her consciousness was there, giving her occasional glimpses of sound in the outside world, she couldn’t wake up. Her initial anxiety and impatience had soon given up to despair. This continued for two years before a voice in her head invited her to join the Space-Time Administration Bureau’s assessment program.

She thought it was all a hallucination from being locked in too long, but accepted because she was too bored. She managed to pass through the minimum 60% average needed to qualify and started her work with the bureau. Only then did she discovered that there were 3,000 realms,1 each with its own set of characters beloved by the Heavens, AKA its protagonists. They could be considered children of fortune because the world’s plot expanded and revolved around them.

Naturally, where there were protagonists, secondary characters existed as well. However, for some reason all of these supporting roles had awakened their self-awareness and disrupted the natural flow of the plot. Ye Wei had started working in this world because the villainous supporting female had one of those awakenings. After that, she was unwilling to keep playing her role and made such a racket that all she did was cause trouble everyday. Once, she even ran to the male lead and told him this was just one of many realms and that he was Heaven’s chosen here. She wanted to chase away the female lead too and messed with the order of the plot. In the end, the main God System had no choice but to send Ye Wei here to take her place and finish the story without any more chaos.

The original owner of this body was exceptionally beautiful, with satisfactory acting skills. She hadn’t met with many setbacks since her debut and even collected a good number of fans. All she lacked was a chance to let her popularity explode. However, because she was so gorgeous, she had no end of admirers and attempts, both obvious and hidden, to get her in bed. The original host had high standards but was basically incompetent. She considered herself have stunning looks and artistic talents, and so looked down on most people. Because of this, she ended up offending many people. Once, a famous old lecher in the entertainment circle set his eyes on her. She didn’t find him appealing at all beyond his money because he was already in his sixties and so ugly that he was unsightly. His teeth were falling out, his head was bald, and he had a beer belly as well as grandsons and granddaughters—a real old pervert. She affronted him while rejecting him, making him vow to block all her prospects in the industry.

Back then, she couldn’t even get roles like Random Female #18. Without power or influence, she was forced to choose between submitting to that old pervert or retiring from the entertainment business entirely. Since the industry refreshed itself with new faces so quickly, she would be stuck indefinitely as a minor artist if she didn’t get a move on. In the end, it was Sheng Zhiming that helped her out. He was the crown prince equivalent of Shengshi Entertainment (盛世娱乐), 25 years old and a brilliant alumni of Cambridge University. Soon after graduation, his father Sheng Guoliang (盛国良) had given him two hundred million as funding for his entrepreneur efforts. Everyone thought poorly of the choice and assumed this 200 million would just be water down the drain.

But within the span of three short years, he had already changed the 200 million to two billion and headlined a new era of budding entrepreneurs. Although he dabbled in love affairs, he had a solid head for business. With money, might, and methods as well as a reputation for being generous, few people in the entertainment business dared to provoke him. His status was no joke, but his looks were that of a refined and tasteful young man with a face that impassioned the imagination. Even if he spent his life just fooling around, countless women would still be willing to throw themselves at him.

Sheng Zhiming was attracted to Ye Wei’s face, while she was desperate to get rid of her problems. Moreover, Sheng Zhiming was younger and more dashing than that stiff old coot, so he was her best choice. She lost nothing by being his woman, and the two teamed up to become a pair.

By the time Ye Wei took over this body, the male and supporting female had already been together for a while now, saving her some trouble. All she had to do was finish her own part in the plot. She had already borrowed Sheng Zhiming’s strength to swagger around and abuse her authority, getting countless brand endorsements and female lead roles for scripts. Even the people who used to bully Ye Wei cowed from her now, allowing her to rise from a second and third-tier star to a first-tier celebrity enjoying a spike in popularity. Everything lasted until Sheng Zhiming met his true love—Wang Ruoyan.

Ye Wei had to make contributions towards the male and female lead’s love story before she could withdraw. In the original plot, the villainous supporting female was loath to part with the male lead’s power and influence, making her a foil to the female lead’s kind and sincere personality. This was the main task of her job now.

Before the female lead showed up, she had leisurely days filled with either filming or public appearances. She spent her other time eating, drinking, playing around, and admiring all the good-looking men in this world, too lazy to bother with the latest news regarding the male lead. All she had to do was show up once in a while so he remembered she still existed, then suppress any cheap wretches longing to take her place. No one else besides the female lead really needed her to do much.

The official story started underway after the male and female leads met. He first saw Wang Ruoyan at a club, when he was preparing to fire an attendant who had accidentally spilled wine on him. The attendant cried fearfully and kept apologizing while Sheng Zhiming only looked impatient. When the female lead saw this, she came to crow at the injustice. As the first woman in the world who dared to shout and yell at him, Wang Ruoyan left a deep impression in Sheng Zhiming’s heart.

The two of them developed their friendship through constant conflict. Wang Ruoyan was currently a student of a film and television academy majoring in acting. She’d yet to graduate from college, but was spotted by a director while accompanying her friend to some auditions and cast as the second female lead.

The main female lead in the project was Ye Wei. By now, she was quite famous and starring in the Shengshi Entertainment-sponsored series Royal Harem. Reception for the show was extremely positive before filming had even begun, so competition was fierce for roles in the work. Wang Ruoyan was very lucky to land such a meaty role in a major production as her debut in the business.

She was also gentle, kind, brave, and unyieldingly tough. She treated everyone equally, showing no airs towards the director while being warm and civil with the staff. Her acting was nimble as well, making her a rare stream of purity in the entertainment world. It was only obvious that she’d attract the male lead’s attention. Sheng Zhiming was originally a playboy who forcibly took anyone that fit his fancy, including Ye Wei herself. But he treated Wang Ruoyan differently than the rest because he didn’t want to spoil her rare sense of purity, much less his clean image in front of the girl. The two of them were a quarrelsome but loving couple, friends yet not friends. He ended up becoming her guardian angel and clearing out all obstacles for her behind the scenes so she could focus on acting without disruptions.

Thus, the playboy turned into a warm family man.

One day, when Sheng Zhiming went to check in on the production, Ye Wei noticed his special treatment of Wang Ruoyan. She had already caused the girl grief on set by pressuring her with NGs in their shared scenes and injuring her through underhanded methods. Every glance she gave her was scornful so the female lead could shrink back in the face of the more popular, prettier her who was Sheng Zhiming’s true woman!

Of course, all of the villainous supporting female’s misdeeds would be returned in spades to her by the end. This happened after the female lead suffered through her grievances to block a knife for the male lead. The story went that Sheng Zhiming, Wang Ruoyan, and Ye Wei were all kidnapped a few days ago—although it was a marvel that such stupid kidnappers ever succeeded in the first place before fleeing away. In any case, that’s how the plot went, so as a good employee she wasn’t going to question it. Anyways, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of 100 hundred million for the hostages, but still wanted to kill them after getting the cash.

During the struggle, Sheng Zhiming’s fists were overpowered by the four hands of his attackers. Someone tried to stab him in the back, which was when Wang Ruoyan threw herself in front to block the blow. It saved his life while Ye Wei was left hiding in a corner shaking from fear. Later on, the police arrived and rescued them. Because the incident had become a huge deal, multiple reporters with tip-offset had already rushed to the scene, just in time to snap photographs of Wang Ruoyan being wheeled into an ambulance while Sheng Zhiming looked frantic by her side. News of Wang Ruoyan sacrificing her life to protect Sheng Zhiming spread far and wide. Everyone knew that they were true friends through thick and thin and life and death. Many people online made an uproar about “believing in true love again,” and even the members of the Sheng family showed Wang Ruoyan respect. Meanwhile, the formerly well-known girlfriend of Sheng Zhiming who tyrannicaly abused her powers, Ye Wei, had only hid away when danger came, not lifting a voice to shout or a finger to help.

【 I have insider news. Apparently Ye Wei was scared witless on the scene and hid herself without moving a muscle. When things got bad, she even denied being Sheng Jr’s girlfriend and insisted they had nothing to do with each other. Tsk tsk, it’s really hard to describe her compared to Yanyan.2】

【 I heard my friend say Ye Wei’s always claiming she’s Sheng Jr’s girlfriend in the entertainment circles. She even got a bunch of perks from Sheng Jr’s side. Last time he invested in that explosively popular xianxia series for her. But this is good, Sheng Jr’s definitely seen through her hypocrisy by now. He’ll keep his distance in the future.】

【Comparing someone like Ye Wei to Yanyan is like the difference between Heaven and Earth. Even an idiot would know who to pick. So what if Ye Wei’s got a gorgeous face? With a venomous heart like that, who knows whether she’d kill you one day? It’s better to stay away before she sells you off and makes you count the earnings for her! 】

【 Tsk tsk, Ye Wei’s true colors are out. I refuse to believe Sheng Jr. will spare her another look!】

Everyone knew that Wang Ruoyan was best for Sheng Jr. Like that, all the bullying Ye Wei did to Wang Ruoyan reversed against her. Accounts exploded on the Internet describing how Ye Wei abused her power against others, undermining her smear campaign of Wang Ruoyan’s “poor acting,” “unprofessionalism,” and “putting on airs.” Wang Ruoyan became a synonym for an “innocent, courageous, compassionate, dauntless” figure “unshaken by her poverty.” Her popularity caught on fire and turned into an inferno that burned to the very top.

Her direct opposite was Ye Wei, the vain and cravenly hypocrite who feared death.

She was the one who got kidnapped with Sheng Zhiming and did nothing?

She was the one who was Sheng Zhiming’s girlfriend but didn’t save him?

Pah, that snob!
