All the five old men nodded their heads at the people in the main hall before looking at the first elder and the sect leader Gerg and asked them to start the duel.

Actually, it was a tradition in the assassin sect that if the first elder, the second powerful person after the sect leader, was dissatisfied with the sect leader, then he could challenge that sect leader to a duel.
In the duel, if he wins then the first elder would become the sect leader whereas the previous sect leader would join the guardians and he would not be involved in the sect's internal matters anymore.
All he had to do was secluded himself in a cave and whenever the sect was in danger, he had to protect it along with the other guardians.
