The Looming Flames of War 2

Mitsugi was developing his idea.

The Gra Valkas Empire declared war on the entire world at the 11 country conference. In response to this, the Ministry of Defense formulated a plan for the defense of the Japanese home islands, primarily focusing on a concrete strategy for a hypothetical fight in the main islands.

Next in the hierarchy are the defense of the countries which can be said to be Japan’s lifelines, the Principality of Qua-Toyne and the Quila Kingdom, as well as the sea lanes connecting Japan to these countries. The specific measures regarding these have been completed with the outline for defense fully prepared.

However, discussions on what measures to take to remove the threat of the Gra Valkas Empire from the economic maritime corridors connecting Japan to Mu are still being held. Since the specific performance of their weapons and their overall strategy are still unknown, only a draft of the measures have been made with the specifics still being debated over. In the midst of their discussions, information of an attack on an automobile freighter came in, as well as that of the Imperial Army’s buildup on the Mu border. With this, the possibility of a land invasion came to light.

Leaving behind some of their forces for the security of the Rodenius continent and the home islands and then putting some of them into safeguarding the 20,000km long sea lanes in between Japan and Mu, they are left with too few of the Self Defense Force’s strength to carry out the government’s order to expel the Imperial Army from the continent of Mu.

If the Gra Valkas Empire’s strength is as substantial as that of the United States, carrying out the plan won’t be problematic, but if they have to defend against an enemy whose weapons have capabilities greater than estimated, not to mention the substantial lack of strength the JSDF has at its disposal… The SDF executives couldn’t help but get so many headaches. Despite that, Mitsugi speaks out in full confidence.

“Mu is presently in a life or death situation and so they are desperately asking for aid from Japan.

At the trade city of Mykal, an airport which can accommodate jumbo jets has just been completed. With facilities that house jet fuel also being completed there, we can use that airport as a stepping stone to the rest of the continent.

Mu has airports set up in each country for diplomatic uses. With Japan’s transfer, Mu has renovated these airports so that jet fighters can use them. Also, due to Mu’s capital investment, jet fuel on those said airports have also been set up.”

He continues.

“Next, we have asked Mu for permission to use the bases in their country, as well as having them set up the aviation fuel and ammunition depots, and they have done so with their own money. Of course, the goods must be Japanese, so when it comes to the ammunition, it will only be Mu taking out their wallets.”

“With a setup on Mu’s west, the Leifor capital of Leiforia just barely enters the operational range of F-2 fighters, so we would need a base on the frontlines. In order to instill the impression on the other countries that Japan will win, we must exterminate the Gra Valkas Imperial Navy and their airpower using 2 escort flotillas, F-2 fighters, as well as BP3-Cs in an attack spearheaded by the Holy Mirishial Empire. If possible, we must also take out their military installments in the Irnetia Kingdom at the same time.

With the current performance of Gra Valkas Imperial aircraft, I don’t think they possess any aircraft capable of intercepting even a lone BP3-C.”

During the war with Parpaldia, Japan improved its flight of P3-C anti-submarine patrol aircraft, maintaining its anti-ship capabilities while making it possible for it to conduct simple bombing runs, christening it as the BP3-C. In this endeavor, they have also begun mass production of the next-generation P-1 anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

“Moreover, the fleets of Mu and the Holy Mirishial Empire will conduct a blockade on the supplies coming in through the empire’s sea routes. In the event that the Imperial Navy comes, Mu and the Holy Mirishial Empire will fall back to Leifor where they will receive air support from F-2s. Cutoff from their mainland, they will be weak.

A certain amount of the Imperial Army’s strength may remain, but without supplies, they wouldn’t be able to conquer the entirety of Mu. It will also be necessary for us to deploy a submarine flotilla to wreak havoc on the Imperial Navy warships off the Gra Valkas Empire mainland.”

People start talking amongst themselves as he continues.

“Since their declaration of war, ammunition, particularly anti-air and anti-ship missiles, are in full production. With those combined as well as judging from the number of vessels in the Imperial Navy, we can definitely eradicate them.

From my calculations, if everything goes well, the preparations will take 3 months at the very least. We would need to buy time.

Also, it is well understood that there’s a special geological feature known as the hollow mountains which make it exceptionally hard to do bombings from the air. For that, we would definitely need the deployment of the GSDF.”

The discussion continues. In order to protect Japan as well as their ally, they continue to wrack their heads for answers.

Later on, the Japanese government decided to deploy the Self-Defense Forces to Mu.

・・・

Japanese embassy, Mu

One man was vigorously petitioning against the orders of his boss.

“But why?! Our country is already at war! What in the world do I have to negotiate with them under these circumstances?!”

The man was Asada. Right after the transfer, he was placed at the front row of diplomatic missions just as he said to himself “This is it!”, and since he reliably achieved favorable results, his boss placed a lot of confidence in him.

“The empire has said that they will leave their diplomatic window open at all times. Your safety is guaranteed. As for the reason you will go under these circumstances, it is fairly simple. Before we clash horns in battle with the Gra Valkas Empire, we must find a way to avoid…”

“It’s impossible!! Please consider the situation!!!”

Asada objects as he cuts into his boss’s statement.

“Hear me out till the end!! In the event it goes south, I just want you to buy us time.”

“Buy time?”

“While there isn’t a press release yet, the deployment of the Self Defense Forces to Mu has been formally decided the other day. This time is substantially different from the wars with Louria and Parpaldia which all occurred close to Japan.

This is Japan’s first true and large-scale deployment of troops since the great war so long ago. There are so many GSDF assets and personnel that even if they were to draft civilian cargo vessels, it would take a lot of time until they can be set up neatly. It isn’t possible to have a definite calculation on the time it’ll take to station as there are coordinations with the other countries.

And yet, still… The Gra Valkas Empire continues to erect a base close to the town of Alue which they might finish very soon. This is where us, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comes in.”

“That’s a tall order…”

“Considering the enemy’s disposition and nature, I understand that it is indeed difficult. However, as the body relegated to foreign affairs, we can’t afford to simply sit still. You do understand this, right?”

“Yes…”

“For this one, I’m approving you to show a bit of our technology to put them off. I’m counting on you, Asada! Impress me!”

Why does it have to be me again…

The pressure of the fact that many lives of the people of Mu as well as their national interests are greatly influenced by whether or not he, and by extension his country, can pull off the negotiations…

This time is vastly different from the Parpaldia Empire over which they had an overwhelming superiority in technology. Even if he was allowed to show some of their differences in technology, he mustn’t divulge information that could jeopardize the country’s interests. Examples include the existence of artificial satellites and pictures acquired via satellite, which would make it difficult to obtain military intelligence if they started to take precautionary measures. Jet aircraft and rockets are also off the table, as they could give the enemy a clear idea of the trend at which our technology is based on.

Asada, feeling the irritation at the exceedingly few diplomatic cards he’s allowed to use, makes preparations for the negotiations.

・・・

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Leifor sub-branch, Leifor territory, Gra Valkas Empire

“…and so my country pledges its allegiance to the Gra Valkas Empire and to His Highness, Emperor Gralux. Please… please promise me that you will at least spare the lives of my countrymen and guarantee the provision of their necessities in life…”

The people clad in peculiar native dresses bowed their heads deeply in front of the Gra Valkas Empire diplomat, Dallas. It was the moment a small country had fallen to the empire.

Looking at them with his usual ruthless eyes, Dallas responds.

“His Highness, Emperor Gralux, is magnificent and his word is absolute!! He has spoken that the lives of lowly civilized natives like you must not be taken without reason! You should feel at ease!”

He continues.

“Well then, I will dispatch personnel from the Subjugation Authority! (A mechanism created by the Gra Valkas Empire to rule over other countries)

Prepare to receive them. Do treat them with diligence.”

Emissaries from the Hinomawari Kingdom, a small country in the Second Civilization Area, discarded their pride as the representatives of their country to protect the lives of their citizens. They left the room with reassured faces.

“Ahhhh… Showing them power really does make this job so much easier…”

The World Union Army, with the Holy Mirishial Empire at its core, fought the Gra Valkas Empire. The empire’s proud battleship, the Grade Atlastar, the biggest and strongest in history, using it’s main batteries, pulverized the aerial battleship with which the enemy had placed tremendous faith in.

Despite the world’s so-called strongest country utilizing its secret weapons, they routed in shame. With this fact, every country in the world must have analyzed that there are no longer any more countries that can win against the empire.

“Well, that’s just how it is…”

Above all of that, as of the moment, the countries close to the empire’s sphere of influence have started capitulating towards them. Shake them before extending the flames of war onto their country. Truly a wise decision.

Dallas goes into putting his work in order. Knocking on Dallas’s door, his boss, Cielia, walks in.

“What did the Hinomawari Kingdom say?”

“They gave in. The details of the terms will be sorted out soon…”

“Okay.”

“…What’s your business here then, Cielia?”

“Well, the Japanese ambassadors are scheduled to come today, right? I thought of participating in the talks as well.”

“Huh?! I don’t think they’re worth you participating, so I think it’s fine if it’s just me…”

“If they were the usual country, then yes, I wouldn’t. However, they’re also a transferred nation, and I am a bit curious as to what a country far outside our sphere of influence will say.”

“Alright… They have suffered casualties due to the recent operations on disrupting the trade between Mu and Japan, so they might have felt the empire’s strength… Since they’re so far, I don’t think they will surrender unconditionally, so they must have come to negotiate measures on becoming some sort of vassal state.”

Dallas made preparations for the meeting with Japan.

1:10pm, that same day

Asada and 5 other staff members from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs took to their seats. After short self-introductions, the diplomatic negotiations began. On the side of the Gra Valkas Empire are Cielia, Dallas, and 4 others, with Asada and the other 5 representing Japan.

Dallas kicks off the talks.

“Well travelled, all of you from the country of Japan! Lately, there have been so many countries that have fallen beneath the empire due to the previous naval battle! Foreign Affairs has been exceedingly busy! It would be beneficial for us if you could tell us in summary your terms.”

Asada slowly begins to speak.

“I heard that… your country has clashed against the World Union in the naval battle off Baltica, with the match being drawn due to injury. At the onset of all of this, your country has declared war on the entire world, including our country, at the world conference. However, after battling it out with the World Union Fleet which didn’t include our country, the Third Civilization Area, and the Southern World, you have been dealt quite an amount of damage.

Have you come to realize that achieving something as overambitious as world conquest is simply impossible?”

Asada slightly provokes Dallas, whose expression has already changed.

“Hmph… You do not seem to know the details of that sea battle. We only suffered against the aerial battleships with which the military is currently coming up with countermeasures. Besides the Holy Mirishial Empire, the other countries, no matter how numerous, are simply not worth the fight!”

They still haven’t come up with any countermeasures against the aerial battleships. Dallas only simply tried to shake Asada with that statement as a diplomatic stab.

“Your country has enjoyed invincibility right after the transfer, taking advantage of the disparity in military technology. Your country is indeed strong and you should have already proven that your country isn’t someone to be looked down upon diplomatically.

Isn’t that enough? What is it that your country aims to strive for?”

Dallas ominously smiles and replies.

“For all of you to fall beneath us… It is the will of His Highness, Emperor Gralux. This is what’s written in His Highness’s book.

The reason why there are disputes is the fragmentation of will into the denominations of each country, with the basis of every country’s movements simply being their own national interests and only that. If one wishes for true peace, they would need to shadow every other country under their rule with immense strength. However, since there are cases of countries being thrown into chaos due to the egalitarian method of rule, they must be managed with an iron grip on top of recognizing a method of governance that suits those lands.

I will assert that what the empire aims to strive for is eternal peace.”

Starting wars while aiming for peace. Asada and the others were at a loss for words.

“Doesn’t your country extract riches from the lands that you govern? Don’t you think that true peace can be earned through that?”

“Japan extracts taxes from its local governments, no? Your capital or country does take away the riches earned by locals simply because the head rests in the capital, right?

I hear that Japan is also at a certain level of civilization. Like most countries, your country must have also governed while experiencing domestic unrest. You see, our empire is doing no more than to do that at the global level.”

Dallas continues.

“Enough with this charade. What is the purpose of Japan coming here? I’m sure you didn’t just come here to provoke us.”

The look in Asada’s eyes changes.

“…We would like you to know a bit more about our country… Furthermore, I would like you to reconsider before we impose on your country a great amount of death.”

“No matter what we see or what you try to explain now, the empire’s objective of world governance will not change. Naturally, Japan lies within the sphere of conquest… Originally, we would have driven out the diplomats of weak countries, but I would like to show my respect to your country which, despite knowing the empire’s power, has stood defiant. I will permit your explanation.”

The Japanese diplomats let out a bitter smile. They took out a small OLED TV from their bag and inserted an SD card.

The TV, in comparison to the Gra Valkas Empire diplomats’ familiar big boxed, small screen, black-and-white, low quality TV, was so slim that it almost seemed like it didn’t have any thickness. Consequently, the Gra Valkas Empire diplomats, upon seeing it for the first time, didn’t realize it was actually a TV.

“I will now be showing you a simple video which summarizes Japan.”

Once Asada had stated this, Cielia noticed it was a TV.

tl note: Yes I know it doesn’t look like an OLED TV, but just imagine that it is (^_-)-☆

“I…is that a TV?”

“Yes. It is.”

“…But wouldn’t the electrical standard in this room be too much for something so small?”

“Don’t worry. It has a built-in battery.”

“Do you intend to relay from your home country? You’re not supposed to be permitted to bring in large machinery.”

“We won’t. We will only let you view a video. The data is stored here.”

Asada shows the extremely small SD card to Cielia.

“!!!”

She was at a loss for words.

Asada silently proceeds with the setup.
