Chapter 34 ~ Fourth Game Pt.5 ~

Gu Yian didn’t normally go and recall her former roommates.

One, their relationship in the later period was average. Two, they had already passed away and Gu Yian’s life had nothing to do with them.

But Gu Yian now recalled the reason why her roommates wanted to play Spirit Pen at that time.

She could only seem to remember that, one day, her roommate, Zhou Yaling, suddenly said she was really bored and asked if everyone wanted to try Spirit Pen.

University students have always loved to chase after dangerous and interesting things. Back then, they were studying and studying and studying, and their days were simply dry and dull. It was reasonable to hear that Zhou Yaling had that suggestion.

In addition, Gu Yian remembered that Zhou Yaling’s boyfriend cheated at the time and her mood was especially bad. She would be furious when she heard a male voice.

Back then, the other roommates, including Gu Yian, deliberately stayed farther away from the depressed Zhou Yaling. They would avoid Zhou Yaling on purpose when they called men, even if that man was their father or brother.

Zhou Yaling not understanding why her boyfriend would break up with her and wanting to ask the Spirit Pen for the reason was a likely possibility.

However, now that Gu Yian looked back and thought on this, she discovered a question. Why was Zhou Yaling insistent about playing the summoning game, Spirit Pen?

There were many interesting activities in university, such as sororities, art festivals, watching ball games, etc. If Zhou Yaling wanted to search for a thrill, then she could even go and explore a haunted house.

As for the reason why her boyfriend broke up with her, she could interrogate the person himself in person.

Why did Zhou Yaling want to bring everyone to play Spirit Pen?

Who gave her this idea?

Gu Yian was a little suspicious of her counselor, Huang Ya, now.

In particular, she heard from the housekeeper that this dormitory had a death before they arrived as new students, and this death was her counselor’s little sister.

Gu Yian thanked the housekeeper, turned around, and left the dormitory building where she had previously lived.

When students who were passing through saw Gu Yian walk out of the dormitory building, they threw astonished looks at her.

Gu Yian was accustomed to other people’s gazes and didn’t bother with them. Instead, she inwardly thought about what she would ask when she saw her counselor in the afternoon.

The counselor was very nice to her, always warning her to be careful, and was even willing to take her to a Taoist temple for the protective talisman.

Going forward, after her roommates died, the counselor believed her statement instantly at the outset and explained it to the school management for her.

Thinking of this, Gu Yian suddenly realized that maybe the reason the counselor believed her so quickly at the time was because the counselor herself knew something about this Spirit Pen incident.

The counselor knew that the deaths of the other roommates had nothing to do with Gu Yian.

What was important now was what role the counselor played in this Spirit Pen incident.

Was she the mastermind or a passerby who knew a little bit of the truth?

Gu Yian hoped she was a good person.

Gu Yian slowed down her steps and looked up at the swaying branches and leaves of the sidewalk trees.

The sunlight coated the tree leaves with a golden light and passed through the gaps between the leaves. As the leaves swayed, the light arbitrarily changed into different pictures.

The gorgeous sight made Gu Yian’s heart leave her troubles somewhat and, once again, she recovered her calm.

Less than 50 meters away from Gu Yian, Brother Zhang and four other players turned the corner of the building and saw a figure looking up at tree branches on the path in front of them.

The male player, who had sharp eyes, said, “Brother Zhang! Is that person her?”

Brother Zhang’s eyesight wasn’t bad, so he naturally recognized her.

When he saw the real person this time, he was even more certain that this was the Little Gu he knew.

“It’s her,” Brother Zhang confirmed.

Brother Zhang turned his head to look at the male player, who didn’t seem to be as stupid as he thought.

But, in the next second, the male player stared hard into the distance and said, “The real person is actually prettier than the photo. That ghost is definitely jealous of her!”

Before seeing the actual person, the male player didn’t talk like this.

The pen in Brother Zhang’s hand threw off his control and shot straight at the male player’s skull, but it only flew halfway before it was forcibly held by Brother Zhang in the air.

Brother Zhang’s hand moved slightly, putting away the prop he had just used to catch the Spirit Pen so that none of the other players saw it. The whole process was extremely quick.

Brother Zhang used all his strength to hold the pen, which was on the verge of exploding in his hand, while he warned the male player, “Shut up, don’t say nonsense.”

The female players also saw that figure in the distance and they were momentarily dazed.

That person stood there, like a cover girl under a photographer’s lens with an outstanding temperament and nonchalantly catching everyone’s eyes.

The more they were of the same gender the more they could appreciate that beauty.

The female players were brought back to their senses by the actions of Brother Zhang and the other male player.

They looked at the pen in Brother Zhang’s hand and then at the male player who was still immersed in the vision of the beauty in the distance.

One of the female players asked Brother Zhang, “Brother Zhang, why don’t we let it go to her directly?”

The female player glanced in Gu Yian’s direction and gestured at Brother Zhang. They could watch in safety while others fought and let the Spirit Pen itself deal with Gu Yian.

Brother Zhang shook his head. “If it could go by itself, then it wouldn’t have asked us.”

The Spirit Pen was in Brother Zhang’s hand and the daylight had no effect on ghosts at all. They worried that the Spirit Pen would get angry and so their words were obscure and extremely indirect.

In this moment, it was unknown whether or not their discussion was heard by Gu Yian.

She withdrew her gaze from the tree branches and turned to look at them.

The male player subconsciously gave her a silly smile.

Some of the female players felt guilty because of the suggestion just now while others were a little scared.

Brother Zhang was the only one who didn’t take a normal path.

The second Gu Yian looked over he rushed towards her!

Brother Zhang’s extreme running speed kicked up the air and a burst of wind blew across the faces of the other four players.

The four players were at a loss and shocked.

At this time, their thoughts were eerily unified.

What was Brother Zhang doing? This was different from what he said. Didn’t he say they would walk over and invite the other party to talk?

Was Brother Zhang trying to kill a person?

A distance of less than 50 meters took six or seven seconds for an adult man who was running at full speed.

Gu Yian had just noticed there were five strange people in front of her looking at her, and that among them was a slightly familiar man.

Just as she thought this, that familiar man rushed up to her.

Gu Yian only had time to take two steps back.

The man stopped all of a sudden and, at the same time, he shoved the pen in his hand into Gu Yian’s hand.

“Little Gu, this is your pen.”

What pen? Where did this nutcase come from?

Gu Yian stepped back again, avoiding the man’s movements.

No one received the pen so it could only drop to the ground.

The man’s eyes also fell to the ground.

He noticed that the dangerous aura was still there, but that it couldn’t move.

Sure enough, there was something strange beside Gu Yian!

The man tentatively stretched out his foot and stepped on the pen on the ground.

The pen cracked.

The dangerous aura on it weakened at the same time.

The man became more excited when he noticed this and he slammed his foot on the pen on the ground several times, not noticing that Gu Yian had already retreated five meters away.

Passersby looked at the man.

He was a lunatic.

They left.

The man’s actions puzzled Gu Yian.

She scrutinized the man’s features from several meters away.

The more she looked the more familiar he became.

Why did he seem like the male player she met in the first game who tricked other players?

“Brother Zhang?”

Gu Yian looked at the man.

The man did not deny this. He was indeed Brother Zhang.

When this name of his was called out by Gu Yian, Brother Zhang knew that Gu Yian had memories of the game.

Gu Yian remembered him.

Brother Zhang put on a warm smile and said, “Little Gu, long time no see. I didn’t expect that the next time we met I would still be a player, but you would be the plot character in this game.”

Gu Yian glanced at the one man and three women in the distance.

The four people stared, dumbfounded, at the wreckage of the pen at the foot of Brother Zhang.

Their expressions even revealed a little hesitation, as if they didn’t dare to come and interact with her.

They were probably the players of this game.

Gu Yian finally got a clue about her own fourth game.

Brother Zhang brought a pen over to look for her, so it was very likely he came to her about the Spirit Pen incident.

Gu Yian really didn’t expect that there would be a day where she would actually become the key plot character in a game.

No wonder the black text said yesterday she didn’t need any hints, it turned out she herself was the clue.

“Your game is related to the Spirit Pen summoned by my roommate?” Although Gu Yian guessed it, she still wanted to confirm it again.

Brother Zhang nodded. “They’re the new Spirit Pen.”

Gu Yian had known about this long ago.

She knew this eleven days ago.

Furthermore, she had looked at the incidents in the table the Student Union member sent her.

After her roommate died, it was very calm for more than a month but one day someone wasn’t afraid of death and ran to Gu Yian’s former dormitory to summon the Spirit Pen.

The Spirit Pen they summoned was Gu Yian’s dead roommate.

From this point, the Spirit Pen completely lost control, which resulted in the later string of deaths.

Gu Yian’s eyes landed on the broken pen on the ground. She asked, “Is there something weird on me?”

Brother Zhang deliberately handed her the pen and even had to step on it beside her. These actions were too strange.

Brother Zhang didn’t seem surprised at all that Gu Yian would ask this question.

“I originally wanted to pass the pen to you and look at its reaction. Later, I realized that once it got close to you it could only be confined inside that pen. Naturally, I rushed to crush it to death.”

He didn’t avoid talking about his bad intentions at the start of wanting to see the battle between the Spirit Pen and Gu Yian.

Gu Yian knew Brother Zhang’s nature and wasn’t angry because of this. She was still as calm as always.

Brother Zhang eyed Gu Yian and asked with disbelief, “Even you didn’t know the Spirit Pen couldn’t get close to you?”

Earlier, he approached Gu Yian suddenly on purpose. He wanted to create an abrupt dangerous situation and probe Gu Yian’s true ability.

The more abrupt the danger the more he could see the cards in the other party’s hand.

Gu Yian smiled faintly and said, undisturbed, “I just found out.”

She had also wondered why her former roommates didn’t come to find her. They killed so many people that if they also wanted to kill her then it seemed reasonable.

After they became ghosts, they even said she killed them. No matter how one looked at this, their animosity towards her was very large.

It was extremely likely they would come to kill her.

However, her life these days were calm and tranquil, almost without any waves.

It now appeared that someone was protecting her in the dark.

As for the person who was protecting her in the dark, Gu Yian had a guess but she wasn’t prepared to tell Brother Zhang.

Gu Yian asked, “Brother Zhang, are you using your old trick again this time? Tricking new players that their mission is to survive seven days?”

Brother Zhang laughed, “Little Gu, sure enough, you guessed it.”

Gu Yian glanced at Brother Zhang and then walked straight towards the four players.

Brother Zhang knew what Gu Yian wanted to do and said at one side, “Little Gu, everyone’s a player. I’m also being kind and letting them leave God’s Game earlier. People like us, becoming familiar with game after game in order to live, will have a mental breakdown sooner or later and go completely crazy one day. It’s better for them to get free earlier.”

Gu Yian ignored Brother Zhang’s rhetoric.

His action of letting other people die under the banner of being good was too excessive.

When the three female players saw Gu Yian and Brother Zhang walk towards them, their expressions showed a second’s struggle before they still stayed where they stood.

The male player didn’t care at all about the thoughts of his female companions. He saw Gu Yian walk towards him and greeted her with a face full of joy, “Hey, beautiful.”

Gu Yian’s sight directly skipped over the male player and she looked towards the three female players to say, “You must be curious about how I know Brother Zhang. Let me introduce myself, my name is Gu Yian and I’m like everyone here, I’m also a player of God’s Game.”

The three female players heard this and their shock was beyond words.

Just now, they watched Brother Zhang and Gu Yian talk from a distance and their familiarity didn’t seem like they had never met before.

They had also suspected inwardly whether or not Brother Zhang knew Gu Yian, but they couldn’t think of any personal time for Brother Zhang to meet with Gu Yian.

In the end, Gu Yian said she was also a player like them.

The three female players were a little confused. Their impression of Gu Yian still rested on the female ghost’s words about her being a kept woman of a rich man.

But if Gu Yian was a player, then she would become their companion.

In fact, the three female players currently didn’t even understand what God’s Game was.

With their current understanding, players were equated to companions.

From someone who was supposed to be their enemy, Gu Yian suddenly became their companion.

The male player accepted this quicker than the others and he was beside himself with joy. “So, you’re a player too. Can’t we play this game together then?”

Gu Yian nodded slightly and said, “I’m a veteran player, so let me tell you how to clear God’s Game. There’s only one way to clear this game, please God. So long as you’re outstanding in a game, then you can complete the game, regardless of whether you trick other players, complete the script God arranged for you, or destroy your enemies. These can all let you clear the game.”

Brother Zhang was calm on the surface, but he sighed deeply in his heart. He just knew Little Gu would do this and expose him immediately.

Gu Yian added, “You can believe me or not believe me, it’s up to you.”

The three players were stunned silly at these words Gu Yian threw out.

The moment Gu Yian came she told them not to trust Brother Zhang.

But Brother Zhang was that veteran player who brought them here.

Who could they trust if they didn’t trust Brother Zhang?

The female players looked at Brother Zhang.

His expression was calm; he neither refuted Gu Yian’s words nor did he agree with her words. No one could read anything from his face.

The male player looked at everyone and mumbled, “The Spirit Pen is gone, our game is already over, so why are you all still talking about clearing the game?”

When he said this, everyone’s eyes turned to him.

The male player was a little nervous being stared at by everyone. “Wasn’t the p-pen stepped on by Brother Zhang? It’s gone so our game is also over. Brother Zhang said we had to survive for seven days and there’s no ghosts, so don’t we just need to casually spend six days in this world?”

One female player asked, “How are you sure the Spirit Pen is gone?”

The male player responded, “Brother Zhang didn’t dare to step on it before, but he did just now. It’s definitely gone.”

His words made Brother Zhang somewhat shocked.

Brother Zhang said, “You actually have some brain.”

There was agreement on the faces of all the female players.

The male player was unhappy. “What do you mean I have some brain? Brother Zhang, it was because I was afraid of the ghost that I almost did something bad last night. I’m still smart in other things, OK?”

Everyone avoided looking at him.

Gu Yian said, “I already know the purpose of why Brother Zhang came to me. Everyone has gotten involved with my former roommates. I think—and some of you have guessed this—there is more than one ghost.”

Back then, between the two female dorms, Gu Yian was the only one who didn’t die, so there could not be just one ghost.

One female player heard this and looked at Brother Zhang, her eyes filled with hope. “Brother Zhang, you said there was only one ghost yesterday.”

Brother Zhang was as calm as always and said, “Yesterday, I was afraid you guys would panic. There are actually two. One was attached to the pen and the other was behind you guys. Later, they all disappeared.”

He told everyone what he had hidden without any shame on his face.

Gu Yian’s former roommates and all the members of the female dorm next door had become ghosts.

This was the reason why even though Brother Zhang knew Gu Yian would expose him he still wanted to find her.

He was afraid that there wasn’t just the two ghosts he saw last night, but many more. However, he couldn’t even deal with one ghost, so he had to pull another person into the water.

Gu Yian took out her phone and checked the time. She turned to Brother Zhang, the male player, and the three female players who were still thinking and said, “It’s almost noon. I’ll treat everyone to lunch.”

She reckoned the players didn’t have this world’s money.

“OK,” the male player agreed without even thinking about it.

Brother Zhang smiled. “We’ll have to impose on you then, Little Gu.”

The remaining three female players looked at each other. Brother Zhang and the male player had already agreed and they didn’t have any other choice, so they could only silently agree.

But they still had a deep wariness towards Gu Yian in their eyes.

A person who ghosts asked to kill suddenly changed into being on their side and even said the original veteran player, Brother Zhang, couldn’t be trusted.

Although Brother Zhang lied to them about the number of female ghosts, in light of how he was very reliable on other matters, the female players had no way of believing Gu Yian. Even if they didn’t actually trust Brother Zhang completely either.

During lunch, Brother Zhang and the male player concentrated on eating and wolfed down their food.

So, Gu Yian began chatting with the three female players.

They chose a small restaurant for lunch and, since they came early and it wasn’t time for most students to finish classes, there was no one around them.

After the owner served them, they returned to the kitchen to prepare more food and left them alone.

Their conversation didn’t need to be watched by others like when they first met.

Gu Yian said, “Meaning, your impression of me is frozen on being the scheming bitch she told you about.”

She just learned from the three female players of their experience of playing Spirit Pen last night.

The three female players tactfully mentioned Zhou Yaling’s words.

Who was Gu Yian? Ten days ago, she had learned from another person that her former roommate became a new Spirit Pen and the other party even lied about how Gu Yian killed her.

So, she had guessed that the ghost, Zhou Yaling, would definitely not describe her well.

Gu Yian said, “She thought I was calling my sugar daddy, but I was actually calling my brother.”

When she explained this point, she didn’t need to give any more explanations.

Zhou Yaling’s words were basically nonsense and not a single word was true.

When the three other female players heard this, they laughed with some shame.

Everyone was a girl here, so they knew that jealousy between girls was the most terrifying thing.

On the basis of appearance, Gu Yian was undoubtedly the person others were jealous of. It was very possible other people would say fake things out of jealousy.

But some things were not necessarily groundless. It must be that this person had a problem in this area, and so that was why people would spread rumors.

The three females couldn’t believe Gu Yian’s words entirely, they felt that Gu Yian might trick them.

Gu Yian also didn’t expect her short explanation could make people believe her. She checked the time and said, “I have something to do in the afternoon. The bill is settled and I’ll tell you what I’ve discovered. This should be your breakthrough.”

Brother Zhang, who had still been eating, stopped moving his chopsticks and listened attentively to the clues Gu Yian provided.

Gu Yian told them, “The Spirit Pen my former roommates summoned at the time should be the girl who died in the dormitory before us freshmen came to the university, Huang Qiao. She must have committed suicide because of rumors. See if you can find her information in the afternoon, our breakthrough should be on her. The person I’m about to meet is Huang Qiao’s older sister and if I get any information from her I’ll share it with everyone.”

After she explained these matters, she said, “I’ll be going first now. Brother Zhang, you saved my phone number earlier. We’ll call each other later.”

Brother Zhang had a phone that could make calls. Gu Yian looked at that phone’s ample battery and guessed that Brother Zhang had probably just stolen it.

He replied, “Alright. Little Gu, we’ll be relying on you.”

The male player’s ears moved and, realizing Gu Yian was about to leave, he actively said, “Beautiful, will it be dangerous meeting her? I’ll go with you.”

Gu Yian shook her head and refused. She put on her schoolbag and then left.

Gu Yian’s figure disappeared through the restaurant door.

The male player was a bit disappointed, but he still didn’t stop eating.

After a while, everyone was almost full.

The male player called over the restaurant owner.

“Excuse me, where’s the washroom?”

The owner pointed in a direction.

The male player followed the direction and went to the washroom, while the remaining three female players looked at Brother Zhang.

The female player who had been acting as their representative asked, “Brother ZHang, can we trust you?”

Through their conversation with Gu Yian, they leaned more towards the answer of pleasing God.

Like Gu Yian said, those were the words they truly saw in the pure white space.

The white space brought them to this world. If they didn’t trust the words in there, then what else could they trust?

Brother Zhang was very calm, without any guilt of tricking people at all.

He answered, “You need to have your own judgment. Who you trust, who you don’t trust, it all depends on you.”

Brother Zhang was evasive.

When the female players saw this attitude of his, they hesitated again. Brother Zhang was a veteran player, and so they immediately swayed between whether or not they should trust him.

Some people were easily shaken by words and one female player started to doubt the answer of pleasing God again.

When the male player came out of the washroom, he hummed a small tune and said to everyone, “I looked at the mirror just now and discovered that I’m especially handsome in the mirror.”

The other players snorted at his words.

Everyone ignored him.

Right after this, a female player also went to the washroom.

After she flushed the toilet, she planned to wash her hands.

There was a mirror hanging above the sink.

The female player checked herself in the mirror while she washed her hands.

Because she suddenly remembered the male player’s words about feeling he was especially handsome in the mirror.

Only, she saw herself raising the corner of her lips in the mirror, making a weird smile appear.

The female player was taken aback, was she smiling?

She wasn’t smiling.

How come the her in the mirror was different from herself?

It was a ghost!

By the time the female player reacted, everything was already too late.

The ghost in the mirror suddenly reached out, her arm coming out of the mirror, and grabbed her neck.

Ten minutes later.

At the table, the two female players and Brother Zhang looked in the direction of the washroom.

One female player said, “I’ll go and take a look.”

That female player walked over and knocked a few times on the washroom door, and called out the name of the person in the washroom.

She listened carefully for any movements inside.

No one answered.

The female player felt this was strange and twisted the doorknob.

The door was locked from the inside.

Generally, people in the washroom would lock the door to prevent others from suddenly entering.

The female player realized something wasn’t right and found the restaurant owner.

The owner happened to be taking down the order of new customers. The rush hour for meal time was coming, so he gave a perfunctory response. “Please wait a moment.”

The female player could only go and find Brother Zhang and the others right away.

Hearing this, Brother Zhang brought along the male player and the two men directly kicked open the washroom door.

The large sound of kicking the door open made everyone’s eyes look over there unconsciously.

Brother Zhang was at the very front and he saw the corpse on the ground at a glance.

His pupils constricted and he said lowly, “They’re forcing us to kill Little Gu. If Little Gu doesn’t die, then we must die.”

Comments from other people came from their surroundings, but the two female players heard these words clearly.

One of the female players looked at the corpse on the ground and asked with a tremble, “Brother Zhang, why don’t… we go and kill her?”

Noon was the time when the sun was scorching.

Gu Yian used a parasol and sat on the bench provided at the bus stop.

She and her counselor agreed to meet at the bus stop at the school gates, and then they would take a ride to the Taoist temple together.

There was no one at the bus stop and so Gu Yian placed her schoolbag on her lap and put the notebook on top of the bag.

She opened the notebook.

A line of words immediately appeared on the blank inner page of the notebook.

“Miss me?”

Gu Yian ignored this question and said to the notebook, “Thank you for protecting me for so many days.”

If it hadn’t been for the sudden appearance of Brother Zhang holding that pen, Gu Yian had no way of confirming this.

She knew that the ghosts of her former roommates existed but she had never seen the ghosts hurt her with her own eyes, so she couldn’t be certain if someone was secretly protecting her, which was why she was never harmed.

Today, Gu Yian finally confirmed this matter and so she had to thank the notebook.

She didn’t know that when she said these words the small charm hanging on her phone moved a little, as if it was a little happy.

Meanwhile, a certain existence shamelessly seized the credit of protecting her at night for himself.

Its subordinate’s protection was equivalent to its protection.

Essentially, it was the one who protected Gu Yian every day.

New words emerged in the notebook.

“Another provided you information and you’re prepared to send him a protective talisman. I protected you for so many days, have you thought about how you’re going to thank me?”

This question was somewhat hard for Gu Yian to answer.

From the look of the current situation, the notebook must have saved her many times in the dark.

A life-saving grace was hard to measure with physical things.

So, Gu Yian didn’t respond for a long time.

The notebook erased its previous letters and a new sentence appeared word for word on the blank page.

“There is no way to repay a life-saving grace.”

It accurately guessed Gu Yian’s thoughts at this time.

New words continued to appear.

“So, why not give yourself to me?” ¹
