[Community Service]

[Sakurai Tōru-dono, lower-rank student of Adventurer Academy.

Thou are hereby ordered to perform community service for one month under the supervision of the 4thUnit of the Knight Order]

The document that Higaki thrusts before me when I returned to the entrance of the academy dungeon contains the judgment passed down on me in the last trial.

As soon as I received the document, I immediately scrunch it up, throw it away, and turn back on my heel to try to take refuge in the dungeon, but I can’t escape from Higaki and Iris next to her and sadly end up getting restrained.

Just like that, I get dragged to the outside. Once there, Higaki launches a firework into the sky in a familiar manner. It is a sight that I feel I remember seeing somewhere.

A few minutes after the firework exploded with a loud noise, the students of the Disciplinary Committee suddenly appear out of nowhere, and then I’m carried off by them to the knight station, where the people of the 4th Unit of the Knight Order who are in charge of the area work at.

And the one who comes out to greet me — who is tied up with a rope – with a smile is a slender but tall, blonde man wearing round glasses, Abel Zione-san, the vice-captain of the 4th Unit of the Knight Order.

“Hi there, Sakurai-kun! It’s been a week since the last time we met, hasn’t it?” (Zione)

“I respect your mentality for being able to talk to a suspect whom you arrested with a smile.” (Sakurai)

“Well, I do feel sorry about that matter. It’s true that we thought that you were the first candidate for the suspect, but to think that you would suddenly be brought to trial the next day after we arrested you, it took me by great surprise.” (Zione)

Certainly, there were people expressing their puzzlement at the fact that the trial was held the next day after I was arrested, but that didn’t lessen my resentment from being made to go through that experience, so I couldn’t help making a sarcastic remark.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about the story from the time I was caught at the end of the academy festival to the present.

After being taken away by the knight in front of me as a suspect, I was put on trial while still being dumbfounded by the event.

As those involved were confused at the holding of the trial, which was too early considering it was the day after the arrest, a royalty, Julia von Knaust, grandly entered the scene as my defender.

In the midst of the unrest in the trial, which was no longer an exaggeration to be called an unprecedented one, Julia, starting my defense, put various difficulties on the knights who had to prove my crime, and she won my presumption of innocence by questioning the situation where ‘the trial held the day after the suspect was arrested’.

However, I couldn’t get away regarding my confession about trespassing into the military academy students’ lodging at the time I was taken away. When the knights brought that up along with my usual behavior, the atmosphere ‘isn’t this guy should reflect once?’ spread in the courthouse, and even Julia couldn’t overturn it.

Or rather, because the defender Julia said, “He has no need to atone for the crime he didn’t do, but regarding the ones he did do, I don’t have anything to say about the matter,” I was judged innocent about the crime of murder, but charged guilty of trespassing and damage to property,

Although I vehemently objected her, “Isn’t authority existing to force the law to yield!?”, my objection was shot down with the theory, “Authority is given only by keeping the law and obligations, and because I’m a royalty, I must take the initiative in upholding the law.”

That being said, perhaps should I say as expected of her, she made a point of compromise where my punishment was reduced to one month of community service instead of imprisonment by making me provide the information on Nanashino whom I fought at the inn where the military academy students stayed at as an exchange… that was how the unprecedented trial settled about a week ago.

The moment I was acquitted of murder and became free, I bought groceries while making a strange voice and went straight down into the academy dungeon, and to vent my anger from when I was being detained by the knights, I ran around the dungeon and killed any monsters I saw on the way, and like that I did ‘Leveling up special training camp~ the inn is in the dungeon’s hidden passage’ and released my stress.

Then suddenly I remembered that I hadn’t met Higaki and Iris after I had suddenly become free and thought, “Shouldn’t I show my face once?” so I returned to the entrance of the academy dungeon, but who would have thought they would be waiting in ambush for me there, and immediately dropped me off in front of the knight station.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t try to ignore the court’s judgment.

I had learned in the Netherworld that making concessions to society to some extent will be beneficial for my leveling in the long run.

That was why, although my motivation was low, I had a at least a shred of intention of following the point of compromise that Julia had made.

But, but y’know.

I couldn’t do any leveling during the time I was being detained by the knights because all my weapons were confiscated and detained. And you all know that robbing me of leveling up is no different from stopping me from breathing.

That was why, the first thing I did after I was released was to go leveling. It is equivalent to a person desperately taking deep breath for oxygen after not being able to breath for a long time; it is no exaggeration to say that it is a physiological phenomenon.

So, now that I’ve already get my fill of oxygen, I can finally adjust my breathing.

However, just because I have adjusted my breathing and regained my energy, it doesn’t mean that I have returned to full health.

Therefore, how about we end it with just a greeting today and I’ll start to perform the community service tomorrow… no, the day after tomorrow… I mean, if possible, starting in my next life

‘Seeing how you can still speak impertinently like that, you must still have a lot of energy. Now go, Sakurai.” (Higaki)

“Please forgive us for the ruckus. Sakurai-san doesn’t know when to give up, but if there is no escape, he will be obedient, so please look after him.” (Iris)

“Don’t worry, I’ve used to people who doesn’t know when to give up due to the nature of my job. Well then, I’ll explain about the community service activities inside, so please bring him in.” (Zione)

Even if you say that, I’d still resist, though? Behold, these squats filled with mine immovable determination!

After all, it is far more meaningful for me to do muscle training here than to do community services that I have no interest in.

Take a look at the report of acquired experienced points at the edge of my field of vision. This is what a true bliss is… oi, what are you looking at, Disciplinary Committee members, you guys haven’t gone back yet? Shoo, this ain’t a freak show, hey wait, why are you guys grabbing my arm, stop treating me like a criminal.

No, seriously, let go! I have to keep squatting in protest against this act of taking away a person freedom! Stop dragging me into the station and go away! Go away from ‘ere!!

“You bastards, ugaaaaaaaaa!!!”

The Disciplinary Committee members, who have grown accustomed to me, ignore and turn deaf ears to my resistance, and I’m forcefully. dragged into the knight station.

So, what exactly am I going to do for the community service?

“The community service that we’ll have you do is, simply speaking, a ‘jack of all trades’.” (Zione)

“Jack of all trades?” (Sakurai)

I repeat Zione-san’s words while quickly untying the rope that the Disciplinary Committee members tied me with.

“Various cases are brought into the Knight Order every day. As you may know, the most common of them are mundane matters of sorts.” (Zione)

“Dunno.” (Sakurai)

“As you would expect, the Knight Order can’t take care of all of them. That is why most of them are passed to the Adventurers Guild in the form of ‘requests’, and are used to measure the credibility of fledgling adventurers, though you might have learned that at the academy.” (Zione)

“Dunno.” (Sakurai)

“This time, the community service that we’ll have you be doing is to receive those ‘requests’ and resolve them. It means you’ll be able to regain lost trust with your own hands. It should be quite famous as a penalty given to the adventurer who caused a problem, though…” (Zione)

“I’ve never heard anything about that.” (Sakurai)

“Sakurai-kun, are you the type who doesn’t attend classes at Adventurer Academy?” (Zione)

Rather than doesn’t attend, I’m the type that can’t attend classes, Sir.

Zione-san said them like they are basic knowledge but I had been involved with various troubles and couldn’t attend classes since the entrance ceremony in April, which was when the basics of the basics should be covered.

In the original game, the requests you’d find posted in the Adventurers Guild in the early stage was mostly errand quests like ‘Please find my cat’ or ‘Buy me some apples’; so this is the reason, huh.

‘Please find my cat’ may still be understandable, but I think it’s plainly wrong to give the knights a request like ‘Buy me some apples’.

After all there’s no phone in this world, if you want to give a request to the knights, you’d have to go to their station. In that case, shouldn’t you just go buy them on your own?

Or what? Is the one who gives the request misunderstanding the Knight Order as a kind of delivery service like the one that was popular in my previous life?

I get it now, if that’s the case, I’d pass the requests to the Adventurers Guild too. They can’t cater to every single guy that comes with such a request after all, and if the request is passed on to the Adventurer’s Guild, it would be up to the adventurers themselves to decide whether to take it or not.

Even if the requester complains to the knights about this, they can deny them saying that “The matter has been deal with appropriately.

“By the way… what about the reward?” (Sakurai)

“Because the punishment is to do jobs that people dislike, you will be given the full amount of it. Given the content of the job, however, what you make would probably only amount to pocket change.” (Zione)

Fumu, since he has promised that all the reward will be given to me, should I accept it?

The rewards of the requests that could be taken at the Adventurers Guild at the early stage of the game is, fundamentally speaking, only a drop in the bucket, but in some of them you may get useful items like ‘Seed’ series that permanently increase your status during the request.

You may think “Aren’t they no longer necessary now after such a long time?” when seeing those items as pure data, but with the game having turned into reality, items are no longer just chunks of data.

Recently speaking, wouldn’t equipping the ‘Three Sky’ series to Horsie to let him fly in the sky be a good example? When I think that they may have a different way to use from the game, getting them may be not a waste of time. When I think that way, my motivation rises, albeit slightly.

“Can’t be helped, complaining won’t be of use anyway. Let’s do it.” (Sakurai)

“I’m grateful if you say that. This kind of punishment may seems difficult at first until you get your hands on it, after all.” (Zione)

Zione-san leaves the room saying that he would go get the documents for the moment while muttering “Good, good,” repeatedly.

When he came to apprehend me, he was very strict, but he might have taken that attitude because he was in front of a suspect.

Then, after a few minutes of waiting, Zione-san appears in front of me, who is playing cat’s cradle with Shishū skill, with a bunch of documents in his arms.

When I pick some of the documents after he placed them in front of me with a thud, requests that shouldn’t be brought to the knight (police) such as “Investigate about an infidelity’, “Help with street sales’, ‘Weed a garden’, and etc are written on them.

I look at them and turn my eyes to Zione-san, but he’s still smiling.

However, his eyes seems to contain no shred of amusement, instead they are filled with the iron will ‘I won’t let you escape’… I let out a small sigh and grasp the bunch of documents in front of me tightly.

“Documents smoke screen!” (Sakurai)

“I won’t let you get away, Sakurai-kun!” (Zione)

The documents I threw scatter in the air and spread all over the room.

The battle in the midst of fluttering papers between Zione-san and me who was trying to escape laster for 5 minutes, and in the end, Zione-san, who was excellent in the art of arresting won.

Thus, my community service began.
