[Toxic Parent Behind]

Contrary to the depression had by Asanaga Ayako, the negotiation itself proceeded smoothly.

Part of it was because both Sakurai and Joseph—who actually did the talking—wasn’t the kind of people who enjoyed war of words, and the other was because neither of them was interested in the value of their own negotiation cards.

Sakurai had a hold on the Saintess and her staff’s location, while Joseph on the information of the hidden passage in the academy dungeon… although both of them were fully aware that they could be used to get an edge over the other in the negotiation, they didn’t mean much to them. They went about the negotiation with a very egoist mindset like ‘there’d be no harm to me even if I tell the other party about it’ and ‘even if we can’t reach a deal, I’ll just come up with another way’. As a result, they agreed on having an equivalent exchange of information based on quantity instead of quality.

“Beside handing over the Saintess, I can offer you my cooperation to retrieve the staff from the monster-infested man-made dungeon. Not to mention, I haven’t reported to the Knight Order that you were behind the attack on the Saintess. That’s a total of three.”

“Well, well, that’s a lot. I’m supposing that one of the things you want is the knowledge I have. Fine by me. From the demonic arts of soul transfer to all sorts of information about Ayako—pick whatever you want. None of them would trouble me, anyway.”

“Then, give me the details of the work passage you used to use when you were participating in the remodeling work of the academy dungeon long ago.”

“About the 8th passage, eh. I knew you’d ask that, considering that you’re a student of the academy and your purpose for coming here. Ah, but of course, I don’t mind it.”

“Okay, two more, then.”

“Ayako, this is a tough opponent we’re facing. I think we’ve run out of negotiation cards. You must think carefully about what may pique his interest, and if it’s something I have, don’t hesitate to bring it up. Ahh, seeing you suffering from this hardship is truly a sight for sore eyes, Ayako.”

“…! ~~!!”

No matter how valuable the information was, it’d only count as one negotiation card.

Both parties brought out cards to exchange with each other, and if the number of cards one brought out exceeded that of the other party, one might make a request to compensate for the difference.

Ayako had a bout of dizziness at the overwhelmingly low-dimensional negotiation done by these socially inept people.

If what the other party after was something she herself could provide, Ayako would be able to interject, but what he was after was Joseph’s knowledge, and Joseph readily agreed to it, drastically reducing her say in the negotiation.

Still, she somehow managed to get the negotiation back on track, then, having made the decision that she had to bring up conditions that were in her favor, she began communicating with writing utensils she had taken from a nearby house as a form of opposition.

“Ehh, it’s a hassle to read. I’m fine with Joseph continuing to act as your interpreter.”

“No one’s asking for your opinion. Ayako has gone out of her way to write for you. If you can’t read it, this negotiation ends here.”

Sakurai found it annoying to read the words written by Ayako, and Joseph got mad at him for dismissing his beloved daughter.

“—Well, alright, fine. Oh yeah. So that no one can back out of the deal by saying ‘I’ve never said anything like that’ or something along the line, please write down the summary of our deal in that memo and hand it to me later, okay?”

“What? The memo written by my beloved Ayako is a work of arts that belongs only to me. It cannot be passed on to others.”

“Again, that’s creepy. Chill out, dude.”

Sakurai tried to get the memo written by Ayako as proof of the successful deal, and Joseph complicated the situation.

“Then, just write another memo with the same contents, and each of us can have one copy.”

“Even if the contents are the same, the writing wouldn’t be perfectly the same. Which means, they’d have a difference in charm!”

With no other choice, Ayako wrote another memo with the exact same content and gave one to each of them. Though, it brought an incomprehensible reaction from Joseph, “See, each of the letters has their own different charm!”

Ayako now became more assured that she couldn’t count her self-proclaimed father as her ally, and she directed a look of scorn toward Sakurai—who had a vividly put off look on his face.

Anyways, here were the deals made between both parties in this negotiation:

First, to cooperate with each other to get to the forbidden book section of the great library to retrieve the staff.

The way to the great library would be swarming with monsters. To safely reach the destination, personnel with excellent combat power would be required.

In addition, it was necessary to divert the attention of the knights guarding the perimeter to ensure the success of infiltration to the inside of the cathedral’s barrier.

Therefore, it was decided that Ayako would be in charge of the fight, whereas Joseph would be in charge of manipulating information.

Second, regarding the information each party had and the handing over.

When and how Sakurai would give the ‘Saintess’ and the ‘staff’, and Joseph the ‘passage information’.

Originally, Joseph and Ayako would only have to hand over the information on the passage when both the ‘Saintess’ and the ‘staff’ were present, but then Joseph had said, “Our information is intangible and can’t be immediately confirmed, don’t you think we should hand ours first, Ayako?” forcing Ayako to receive overwhelmingly disadvantageous conditions.

The result of which, it was decided that the ‘passage information’ would be handed over when they recovered the ‘staff’ in the forbidden book section, and the ‘Saintess’ would be handed over after Ayako returned safely to Joseph’s side.

And finally, regarding monitoring the ‘Saintess’.

They agreed on allowing Joseph to monitor the ‘Saintess’ by placing his puppet near her in order to prevent her from escaping during the dungeon capture.

Sakurai had no intention of moving the injured Cordelia from the hospital in the first place, so he readily accepted it.

But of course, there was no reason for him to accept it unconditionally, and Sakurai made Joseph agree to let his side put an escort by the ‘Saintess’s’ side.

This was to prevent the situation in which the ‘Saintess’ was kidnapped while they were capturing the dungeon, and Sakurai decided to have Iris to do the job. Because with her ‘Magic Eyes’ Iris could tell from among those who got close to the ‘Saintess’ which was the puppet.

And so, concluded the negotiation between the two parties.

Needless to say, the conditions were overwhelmingly advantageous to Sakurai side, and Joseph was fully aware of it, yet he still accepted it in spite of Ayako’s protest. Ayako knew he was doing it on purpose.

But what Ayako didn’t know was Joseph’s line of thought—he didn’t care if this endeavor succeeded or the failed, and in fact he’d rather it failed.

Hence, she simply attributed it to him being a bastard that he was, and thought he couldn’t be any lower than he already was, giving him a look of contempt.

“…Mm, fufu. Good, you’d never give me this look unless we’re in this kind of situation. Honestly, you’re so cute and adorable.”

The man, on the other hand, simply received the gaze of his beloved daughter with a smile of enjoyment.

In his mind, Ayako’s contempt and anger-filled gaze only made her looked like a child going through her rebellious phase, and he took it as a sign of Asanaga Ayako’s growth, bringing him joy.

He then proceeded to imagine a scene set a few years later, in which he was sitting in a sofa with Ayako—who had grown into a full-grown woman—clinging to his arm, all smiles, saying, “I remember back in the days I used to hate you so much, Dad. So many things have happened since then, huh?” causing his lips curled up into a smile and his heart filled with warmth.

In contrast to Babi Niflheim who got a nickname of ‘The Violent’ due to his egoistical and violent personality, Joseph Asanaga got called ‘The Unscrupulous’ from his defensive ability to twist the emotions Ayako directed at him in a way convenient to him.

Faced with these two—who probably should be called the two biggest garbage in the world—the players of the original game couldn’t help but think, “Do the developers have a grudge against fathers or something?” but… that was a story for another time.

And so, Ayako finished her recollection, and she hung her head down.

Why did she had to go through all this? Anger was boiling within her.

But she now had to endure in order to free herself from the unreasonableness that bound hers.

Having renewed her determination, the clip-clopping of horse’s hoofs reached her ears.

“Oh, there she is.”

“Hey, Tōru… are you really sure about this? She’s the one who drove us into a corner in the first place, right?”

“No worries. Everything’s gonna be fine.”

“Haah. I’ve got no choice but to believe in you, I guess.”

“Hin, hihiiin.”

When she turned in the direction of the sound, she spotted Sakurai and his friend coming over her way.

He, along with the daughter of the Saintess, was riding on the wagon towed by a horse.

She’d be joining this rag-tag party, and together they’d be challenging the ‘Elf Territory Cathedral’, which he called a man-made dungeon.

“…………”

She had to do it, she had to endure it, and she had to outsmart them and get rid of Joseph.

She knew things would be very tough, but Ayako resolved to be the last person to laugh, and she squeezed the trident in her hand.
