Fina suddenly opened her eyes.

She could see a crude wooden roof right above her, and lay there with her limbs tied up.

She quickly checked her surroundings, and saw the Carbuncle next to her who had even its mouth bound. It looked so humorous Fina forgot her situation and ended up bursting into laughter.

But there was no time to be laughing. She didn’t know a room so crude.

In other words, this wasn’t her home.

In the first place, she was supposed to be checking the fair in the village. Her memories were cut midway through it.

“Where are we?”

“Mghhhh!”

The Carbuncle started squirming around, reacting to her voice. Seeing that it was alive, she felt relieved for the time being.

Since its mouth was plugged, it couldn’t even raise a voice.

They seemed to have sensed their awakening, the door silently opened.

“Are you awake, little lady?”

Three men she didn’t know entered the room. They were all half-demons. They all had water and food in their hands.

Fina didn’t remember their faces at all. They walked to her, squatted down, and brought water to her mouth.

“Sorry about this. We just… had no other choice.”

“If you don’t make a scene, we won’t hurt you. Please just behave.”

“Don’t worry. Once everything is settled we’ll let you go back.”

As they spoke, she was fed bread and rice porridge. Feeling dissatisfied with the situation, Fina had a rare angry expression.

“Mister, why did you do this? Untie me.”

“I can’t do that. At least until Maria cooperates with us.”

“Mom?”

“Yeah. Unless we have her healing magic, Yuna… my daughter will…”

“It’s not just his daughter. Even my mom is in danger.”

Fina looked puzzled, seeing their bitter expressions.

For a little girl like her, this was the first time she saw adults make such painful expressions.

“Mister, are you suffering? I can make medicine, you know?”

“No, I’m not the one suffering, it’s my daughter. And we need a special medicine or else she won’t last long.”

“We were provided Kufar’s medicine until now but… No, I guess this isn’t something to tell a child.”

“I might be able to help you, so can you tell me the details?”

The men exchanged looks, seeing Fina’s conduct that didn’t fit her age.

After wavering about what to do, they decided to step out.

“Sorry, we don’t know how much we can tell you. Please give us some time.”

They stood up and left the room without waiting for her answer. That made her displeased.

“I wish they would let me drink some more water at least.”

Bread, porridge, and water were left near her, but she was tied up. She couldn’t possibly eat in that state.

◇◆◇◆◇

The men sat in a circle in a decayed hut outside the village. This hut had no tasteful things such as a table or chairs.

“What do you think about that little girl’s words?”

“Even if she’s Lyell and Maria’s daughter, I don’t think she could make medicine that could cure Yuna’s incurable disease.”

“But still, what if… Troy, my mother is also suffering from the same illness.”

If there was a small hope, he wanted to cling to it. One of the men implied that unspoken.

“With half-demons like us, neither Yuna nor my mother would get proper treatment.”

“I don’t know about Kufar’s medicine, but maybe there was a chance.”

Each of the men had someone dear suffering from a peculiar illness.

The daughter of the man called Troy, Yuna. Mother of the man called Jones, Veronica. And the third man, Zell’s lover, Ticia. They were the sick people.

In reality, their illness was something Kufar invented, but they had no way of knowing it. And the medicine was also Kufar’s making. In other words, he was performing a part in his own play.

They had no inkling of that and cooperated with Kufar to heal their loved ones.

Then Kufar disappeared after he headed to Berith. As a result, they were abandoned along with their sick people.

The organization made up of half-demons was already on the brink of collapse, and these people hadn’t been caught by Elliot for the sole reason that they hadn’t taken an active part in the events due to being burdened with sick people.

“Still, she’s Maria’s child. She could have medical knowledge.”

“Don’t be absurd. She’s still three years old, you know?”

“I know that, but… we have no other path. Since we cooperated with Kufar, we’ve gotten even shadier when half-demons are barely given healing as is.”

“But if we didn’t, Ticia would have died.”

“Yeah, you’re right…”

Since they were half-demons, their half-demon daughter, mother, and lover were also scorned, and they couldn’t get proper treatment.

The one who extended a helping hand (or so they believed) to them at that moment was Kufar, who was no longer around.

Having lost the one they depended on, they plotted to kidnap Fina in a desperate attempt. They believed that Maria, who was called a Saint, could save their precious people.

Naturally, they didn’t think she would cooperate with them who helped Kufar.

Thus, with no other way left for them, they didn’t know what to do, and ultimately ended up resorting to violence.
