“So, some mysterious beam is connecting Lio Marie and Gutura and they want us to investigate it?” Eleb asked.

“I suppose so,” I said as I began to unroll the scroll.

“Isn’t that a bit vague…”

I looked at the scroll and after reading it through I was unsurprised Eleb did not understand it. Master must have known I’d be able to understand it as someone who has lived multiple lifetimes. Explaining why I know such things to Eleb, who was not privy to such information, could prove difficult.

“Actually,” I began as I re-rolled the scroll and tucked it into my sleeve. “There are strangers who want a violent chat about to round the corner.”

“Then let’s show them our conversation skills.”

“My throat’s a bit parched for that. Why don’t we get a drink in here instead.” I dragged her into the restaurant we happened to be loitering in front of. She was hesitant to accept my idea, putting up some resistance.

“Won’t they find us anyway?”

“Maybe, but they’re less likely to cause a commotion.”

“I didn’t think you’d be scared of a commotion?”

“Table for two?” asked the waiter.

“I’m not scared, I’m cautious.” I clarified to the angsty Eleb. Then I turned to the politely waiting waiter. “Yes please. We’re just looking to have a drink.”

“Sir, this is not the kind of establishment you come to for just a drink.” I looked around, finally taking in the establishment I’d just walked in to. First I noticed the intricate carvings in the large marble walls. Great big fish swam and leapt alongside dwarfed boats that could not help but rock uncontrollably in the disturbed water. I could taste the seafoam breaking from the tips of each enormous wave. I heard the fishermen shout as they desperately wielded their tiny spears in an effort to capture the massive beasts.

“It’s a depiction of the great battle with King Sunfish and his family,” said the waiter, spying what I was gazing at.

“It’s fabulous work.”

“It is the pride of our restaurant. Would you like me to find a table facing it?”

“I’d like that very much.”

“I’d prefer one facing the chefs,” said Eleb.

“Oh,” I said, surprised she had a preference. “Then, a table facing the chefs, please.” The waiter nodded but was quickly stopped.

“Wait, sorry. I was just teasing. Let’s sit facing the fish wall.”

“The fish wall?” I echoed, embarrassed about her ridiculous nickname for the art.

“A table with a view of the fish wall, follow me.” Giggled the waiter as they showed us to the table which, by all accounts, was ideally placed to gaze upon the artwork. It must have been quite a common request.

“The fish wall?” I asked in a whisper to Eleb again.

“My previous teasing didn’t work so I had to try again.”

“Well, that one worked.”

“Obviously,” she sneered and sat happily on the chair with the best view of the fish wall. Feeling a little hard done by, I sat in the other one and moved it a little closer to her so as to get a comparable view.

“Oh, my. Can’t keep yourself away from me?” she asked with another cheeky smile.

“What is happening?” I asked no one. The waiter laughed and provided us with a single menu. The look in their eyes told me they were doing it on purpose.

Thankfully the waiter left as one look at the menu, specifically the prices, dropped our jaws.

“To think you’d take me somewhere so fancy on our first date,” said Eleb, recovering quickly. I checked inside my dimensional ring. “I’m going to be a poor man,” I muttered.

“Luckily I’m not a shallow woman. I only value strength.”

“How are we going to pay our transport to Lio Marie?” I asked.

“You’ll have to sell your body,” she said with a serious face.

“You’d do that to someone so innocent?”

“I only value strength, not innocence.”

“You’re awfully excited about eating here for someone who was dragged inside.”

“You robbed from me one fun experience, you are obliged to provide me another.”

“Uh oh,” I said before suddenly ducking underneath a plate which was flung straight at my head. “Seems like they found us, and they don’t care about a commotion.”

“Luckily, neither do I.” Unfortunately for Eleb, before she could even roll her sleeves up, the perpetrator had been dispatched. An old woman in a lengthy dress with the pattern of a strange weaving purple plant.

“Are they with you?” she asked us. We both shook our heads rapidly, even Eleb could understand the powerhouse that stood before us.

“Did you try to hide in my restaurant?” We nodded, of course.

“Annoying, but smart. Impossible to be angry.”

“You have a nice wall of fish,” stuttered Eleb. The woman laughed, I elbowed her in the ribs.

“Thank you,” she said as she approached the wall and pointed at one of the people on the tiny boats. “That’s me.”

“I can feel that it was a tough battle, but I am unsure of the conclusion. It is like it was left out of the qi intention.” I said, my curiosity overcoming the desire to stay silent. I was fully aware that the likes of qi intention would confuse Eleb but while the answer was in front of me I was not going to put it to waste.

“That’s because it is ongoing.”

“The battle is ongoing or the carving?”

“Both.”

“I see…”

“They’re still fighting the fish?” Eleb almost shouted, she was so surprised.

“Can’t you see it girl?” asked the elderly woman. I watched Eleb squint and stare as hard as she could.

“Idiot, it’s not something you see with your eyes,” smirked the woman.

“Then why would you use the word ‘see’?” I could only admit that she had a point, it annoyed me as well, when elder masters used the word see when the word feel exists and was far more apt.

“Because you have to use your eyes in order to experience it.”

“But it is not my vision that is hindering me but my comprehension. So would it not be more accurate to ask if I could feel it?” I was giving all I could to not break out into laughter, it was not enough to hide the smile, unfortunately.

“Out!” Shouted the woman.

“Yes Ma’am!” I shouted and dragged Eleb by the collar out the restaurant.

“Did I do something wrong?” she asked once we were safely outside.

“Only because you’re not strong enough to deal with her anger, your logic was sound.”

“One day, I’ll be back to beat her up,” she said as she clenched her fists.

“It’s okay. People like that aren’t worth spending time on.”

“What about people like that?” she asked and pointed behind me.

“People like that don’t give us much of a choice.”
