In a picture of bliss, El dived into the crystal clear waters of Lake Esio. She left nary a ripple, her perfect form propelled her a significant distance away from the edge of the pier where I was left standing. She emerged and slicked back her short hair. She began treading water with an inescapable smile. “Joining?”

I suddenly looked downcast. “I just remembered I have somewhere to be…”

“What?!” she shouted and smacked the water angrily. I only smiled and dived in after her. She was trying her best to look angry when I surfaced but after splashing me in the face she finally let herself laugh. “You’re an arse,” she chided.

I shrugged. “I know, shall we see where this beam goes then?”

She pouted and latched on my shoulders, sinking me below the surface a little. “Can’t we play first?”

I spat water from my mouth and shook her free from my shoulders. “Play what?”

“First to swim to the other side?”

“You want to do another race? You know how the last one went."

“I’m a good swimmer.”

“I’m an even gooder swimmer…” I countered.

“We’ll see who’s the goodest then!” Then she paused. “But you have to give me a head start.”

“How can you be the goodest if you have a head start?” I asked, feeling wronged.

“You have a biological advantage as a man!” She challenged me.

“You are cultivating a strength technique!”

She looked insulted. “I’m not going to use it! That would be cheating.”

“I’ll give you three minutes.”

She scoffed. “I’ll finish the width in three minutes.” She began before looking at the distant houses on the opposite shore. “Alright, three minutes.”

With that, she was off. She was a good swimmer, her dive was the clue but her stroke was perfect. Her legs kicked just the right amount of water, her arm pulls created perfect whirlpools with her hands.

I realised that this time, I might be in trouble. She had incredible form and three minutes was a long time for such a short distance. It didn't matter, win or lose, we were just playing.

“HAH!” shouted Eleb as I arrived just behind her. “I win!”

“You win.” I conceded with a laugh.

“Oh, that feels good,” she said as if she were surprised by the fact. “Can I kiss you?” she asked.

“Come here, get your reward.” She giggled and jumped into my arms, luckily I was holding onto the bank and managed to not be drowned by the extra weight.

She kissed me hungrily, her toned body in my arms and her wonderful taste meant that I responded just as intensely. She grasped the back of my neck and wrapped her legs round my waist, not letting go for a long while.

Eventually our make out session came to an end. She looked like she wanted to move on to the next stage but I doused her in lake water to remind her where we were.

“Okay, I get it! I’m getting the rest of my reward later though…”

“By the sounds of it, so am I.” I gave her another kiss and then started to swim to the middle of the giant lake where the beam disappeared.

El and I ducked under. With enhanced bodies, thanks to our cultivation, we were able to hold our breath for a huge amount of time. I watched the beam travel downwards, it had curved unnaturally to enter the lake which was already enough information for me to conclude there was some trickery at work.

We reached the bottom of the lake and still we found nothing. The beam seemed to disappear into the ground. We scoured the lake floor, I was looking for an entrance or at least evidence of one as I was sure the beam wouldn’t have disappeared into solid ground otherwise.

Eventually, El stopped swimming and started clearing mud from the lake floor. I swam over, curious about her sudden excavation. She waved me to help so I started pushing mud aside with my foot until I saw what she had found and started more seriously going at it with my hands.

The mud obscured a stone floor that looked extremely intentional. It was covered in markings that both El and I knew was a complicated array. It was beginning to explain the disappearing beam, we simply had to find out the array’s function and who had made it. Luckily, Eleb was well ahead of me in the discovery of the array’s layout and was swimming away from me.

She turned around eventually as if she had just remembered my presence and beckoned to follow her. I saw that she was following a link. A link was something someone who knew nothing about arrays knew about arrays. It was vitally important in disabling an array which every cultivator worth anything would have to do at some point.

The presence of a link meant that at the bottom of the lake was likely the vast majority of the array, the rest being in a place more accessible, the implication being the array was in active use.

Suddenly our quest had become unpredictable. I looked at El swimming excitedly onward with some trepidation. We found the wall of the lake and El paused. I looked at the wall and shook my head. It was not a simple illusion, but it was infinitely underprepared for someone like me. I washed it away with just a trickle of qi. The problem with illusions was that they easily collapsed.

El pumped her fists excitedly, she swam over and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I felt like I was enabling her dangerous streak but I could not deny that the excitement of the mystery had got to me as well.

We swam through the opened tunnel for a while until it opened up into another lake. We were beginning to run out of breath and we both felt it was a good time to surface, just to scout the surroundings. We popped our heads out of the water and savoured the fresh air.

I realised all too quickly that we were not somewhere we should be. There were people in orange robes all around us. We had unwittingly infiltrated a sect.
