We approached the sect in character, me an uptight and savvy young master whose ego was topped only by his ambition. El was my first servant’s child and was eventually assigned to me after threatening to end her own life if she was not allowed to follow me.

Admittedly, it was a little dramatic but neither of us felt like holding back on such a stellar opportunity to exercise our imagination a little bit. I did doubt the situation would arise that would allow El to explain her circumstances as my servant but she was having so much fun creating the role that I hadn’t the heart to stop her.

Tressy looked more like an elite academy than a cultivation sect. It was populated by large white buildings with bright orange rooves, a similar colour to the robes the disciples wore.

I stopped a nearby disciple upon entering the threshold. “Excuse me, I’m interested in joining the sect.” The disciple sighed, clearly bothered but only just polite enough to not say so outright.

“Follow me then,” they said.

After they’d turned their back I looked to Eleb and raised an eyebrow, she hid a giggle behind a raised hand. “Only if it’s not too much trouble,” I said, without taking my eyes off Eleb. I got a frustrated sigh for my efforts.

“It’s not.”

I realised that I was acting a little too childish for a millennia old immortal being and stood up straight to follow the poor, frustrated fellow.

We were eventually introduced to a woman wearing blue. She had long, wavy hair and delicate skin. She was sitting behind a large wooden desk, large glasses balanced precariously on the end of her gracefully large nose.

“Sorry to interrupt,” said the disciple. The lady looked up from her papers and helped the glasses back up her nose to get a good look at the source of the interruption.

“New disciples?” she asked.

“Yes, Ma’am.” The disciple bowed. El and I bowed alongside, unwilling to be thrown out before we’d even introduced ourselves.

“Leave us Tanio.” The disciple turned and left without a word. I was beginning to see where the pompous reputation came from. At least in Gutura they wore their opinions on their sleeves, here I got the impression no one really knew what anyone thought about each other.

“Both of you would like to join?” Asked the Elder, she stood up to her full height.

“Just me.”

“Then she is your friend?” She had a suspiciously raised eyebrow.

“My servant.” I confirmed.

“Glad to hear it,” she said and displayed a satisfied smile. It was my turn to raise my eyebrows, unsure of what she meant by being glad that I had a servant. I was afraid to see what El had made of the comment.

“What is your family name?” She continued as she opened a drawer on the side of the room and pulled out a giant ledger.

“Lai.”

“From?”

“Fel Maer.” She hummed as she flicked through the pages until she eventually pointed at the page.

“Fan Re or Sen’o?”

“Sen’o,” I was shocked at her casual mentioning of my big brother. Admittedly I was from a wealthy family, and quite prestigious within Fel Maer but irrelevant outside of it. I pondered the meaning in having such a ledger, I also hoped it did not detail my misdeeds. The way she slammed it closed and smiled at me, I concluded that it did not.

“Welcome to the sect.”

“Pardon?” I could not help but stutter.

“You are welcome to join the sect, your family meets the requirements.”

“Forgive me, I was expecting to have to meet the requirements myself.”

She chuckled. “We are confident in our ability to teach anyone civilised enough.”

“I see…” I didn’t see, not at all. Being polite or well-mannered had no bearing on cultivation talent. However, I was not going to pass up on the free entry to the sect, I could only lament the lack of opportunity for mischief. I did not need to look at El to know that she was disappointed.

We were escorted by the lady to the outer circle disciples. A large garden of extravagant flowers parted by paths of small fixed rocks. Lush grass encompassed small huts, we were being led towards one such hut.

“Please ask your neighbour for more information about our sect. It is a sect requirement that you get along with your neighbours.”

“Alright,” I confirmed my understanding falsely once again. Cultivation, not counting my method of it, was a lonely journey. Friends were a luxury available to only the powerful or experienced. A friend was someone incapable of killing you, even if they wanted to.

Still, we bowed to the Elder and said our farewells. Standing, thoroughly confused, in front of an empty hut we needed only to look at each other to see that neither of us knew what had just happened.

“It doesn't bear thinking about…” I said.

“You’re right.” El agreed.

“What do you say? We do some exploring?”

“We could do with a guide,” said El. We both looked at the door of our neighbour at the same time.

We knocked on the door and waited patiently. Instead of a greeting at the door, a stray head poked out of the window to the left, surprising the both of us.

“Hello!” A girl shouted. She tried to bring her head inside the window and ended up banging it against the frame. She yelped in pain and bashfully brought her head inside more carefully before sliding the window closed.

The door opened to a heavily blushing girl who was remarkably short, she had twin tails of plaited brown hair and was covered in freckles.

“Nice to meet you,” she bowed extremely deeply.

“Nice to meet you too,” I said and equaled the depth. She shook her hands as if nervous and smiled.

“What can I do for you?” She asked.

“How about show me that bump on your head, it looked like it hurt.” She panickingly threw her arms in the air.

“Please, don’t worry about it!”

“I’m a healer, so let me know if it hurts and I will sort it out for you.”

“He’s very good,” confirmed El behind me.

“I assure you, I am fine. Thank you.” She spoke quietly, a shy smile stretched her lips thin.

“Actually I came here hoping to be shown around the sect, I am new after all.”

“I’d love to!” She said, regaining her previous excitement.

“Thank you,” I joined her enthusiasm with a polite laugh. Even El could not hold back a smile. “My name is Sen’o, this is Eleb.”

“I’m Maddalyn, just call me Maddy.”

“Are you sure you don’t want me to check your head?” I asked again. I received a swift elbow from El who recognised that I was beginning to tease her.

Maddy rubbed her skull. “Can you stop the pain?”

“Undoubtedly.” I rolled up my sleeves and laid my palm over her head. I channeled my qi briefly and calmed the oncoming swelling.

I took my hand off her head and smiled at her surprised expression. “You really did!”

“He’s much better at making people feel good than feel bad,” giggled Eleb, with a familiar phrase.

“Why would you want to make anyone feel bad?” Asked Maddy, innocently. Eleb stood stumped. I laughed, it was a simple line of logic that came the closest of anyone to describing my own morals.
