It was another day of learning that I was greatly appreciative of. Sen’o was a fantastic teacher, but he was also at the beginning of his journey as a cultivator and spent a huge amount of time focusing on his own progress.

I realised after only a couple of days how much Sen’o had left for me to figure out on my own. My dantian, for example, was far more complex than I had been led to believe. Just what could be achieved inside it was miraculous. I had an idea of its power after adopting the soul of a powerful creature but Master Laaka was telling me that whole oceans and mountains could materialise in the dantian’s of cultivators with the more powerful souls.

I began to look at the small aviary inside my own with a more grounded view, there were a lot of improvements to be made. I was focused on a breakthrough. Getting to qi soul stage was my first priority as it would mean a far more fruitful dantian which would greatly increase my ability to summon and direct the bird.

The bird I had named Losty, it was in reference to a book I had read growing up and as far as I could remember, the first one I ever finished. Master told me that as I progressed I would become more capable of communicating with Losty. Though, I was not counting on that happening anytime soon.

Chit went about her own training, also overseen by Master Laaka. Her previous Master was not particularly interested in training her before and had taken quite a hands-off approach due to Chit continuously embracing the backlash her technique was inflicting.

The Master was quite happy to agree when Chit asked if she could accept a new Master, eager to wash their hands of the situation. Hence Master Laaka went from the least popular elder to accepting three new disciples in a relatively short time period. She kept referencing her progress within the Elder’s Call but I was not sure I wanted to pry - I had enough information to be contending with as it was.

Chit was more knowledgeable than me and was progressing quickly. She was still as silent as ever but her healthy, moisture filled face told me that it was out of habit now and not due to any lingering pain.

“Master?” I asked one night after finishing a day of training.

“Yes, darling?”

“When I was first learning to cultivate, Sen’o told me about things that can speed up your progress. He used a statue carved with some fancy technique for example. Is there nothing I could be using now that would have a similar effect?”

“That is a good question,” she said. She always made sure to encourage my curiosity and considering the sheer amount of questions I had, I was happy that she was so accommodating and patient. “It is beneficial to certain people and in certain ways. The benefit depends on the item being used but the cost is that your cultivation is filtered through an object that may not be related to your technique. Unfortunately I do not have anything that would mesh well with your Lonely Whispers.“

We ended up following several tangents until my manners finally caught up with me and finally let Master Laaka get on with her evening.

“Good day?” Asked Chit, as we walked back to the accommodations.

“Swell, I’m so close to breaking through, I can feel it.”

Chit smiled mysteriously. “More anticipation, tighter bottleneck.”

“In that case, I am not looking forward to it at all!” But Chit shook her hand and looked at me.

“Middle ground.”

“I don’t think I can go any lower than excited.” Chit shrugged. “It’s going to be hard isn’t it?” She shrugged again. “I’m not opposed to difficulty but I don’t like being stuck. Does a bottleneck feel like being stuck?”

Chit shook her head and thought about my question. “Feels like you need to sneeze but can’t.”

I grimaced. “That’s the worst feeling.” She nodded in silent agreement, “I’m less excited now.”

She lived on the other side of the hole to me so we split up to go to sleep. We had been sleeping over each other’s a few of the nights but the beds were slightly too small for it to be an every night occurrence.

I habitually cultivated for a bit on my bed, it gave me a chance to comprehend and consolidate the day’s progress.

“Hear me, please?”

A strange and booming voice powered into my dantian, it frightened Losty into a tree and drowned me in its swirling depth.

“Please?” It cried.

I desperately wanted to reply to it but I was incapacitated by overwhelming force.

“I am begging.” There was a harsh contrast between the helpless words and the almighty power behind them. I was not going to give up, I forced my qi through my body and I became aware of the overwhelming loneliness it exuded and swamped my technique.

I did not need to tame the beast, all I needed to do was to speak. Only that.

“I hear…” I panted out. I did not even manage to finish the sentence.

“Come to me,” it said then it withdrew leaving me exhausted.

I left my dantian and followed the direction of the voice. It was not one I recognised but rather the power that accompanied it was familiar. I knew exactly where to go.

I took a few steps outside of my room and looked down.

A pit of darkness that promised nothing.

I smiled. “I told you there was something down there.”

I took a step forward and plummeted.

The light disappeared quickly. I could only hope that I had made the right decision. Whilst I was sure there was something at the bottom of this hole, I was not sure if it was going to catch me.

I fell for so long that I had time to think about the decision, despite having already made it.

I also had time to remember and activate the technique that I had learned in order to see in the dark. I looked around and was somehow disappointed when all I saw was rock.

I looked down and screamed as the floor came into view. I closed my eyes, unwilling to witness my demise, however instant it would end up being.

Instead I felt my body lurch and my robes lift up above my head due to a hasty stop. However, nothing was touching me.

“Open your eyes, child.” It was the same voice as before, this time lacking the choking power. I opened my eyes. Before me sat the largest creature I had ever witnessed. It hid giant teeth behind a jaw that was larger than me. It was blacker than the dark that surrounded us with shimmering swirls of patterned scales that glinted with each slow breath. It’s back was decorated with large spines that ended abruptly as the tail seemed to have been cut short. “Thank you for coming.”
