Respect The Strong (28)

Hope Base was relatively complete in all aspects. The people at the base have done a series of inspections on Chu Xiang and the others before inviting them to enter the base. Though, the base was divided into two parts— a large part was meant for the people living in the base and a small part was available for outsiders who first entered the site. A period of time was required for outsiders to gain the trust of the residents before they were entitled to enter the residential area, maximizing the security of the base without making either side uncomfortable.

Chu Xiang and the others have been inspected and confirmed to be harmless, even though the outsider trio were expected to fend for themselves here. The base did not desire their personal belongings and even gave them a small amount of food to express their welcome. The food provided were the vegetables grown by the base itself, which were particularly fresh, showing the strength and characteristics of the base.

The people in the base were neither very warm nor indifferent to them; they treated them with a touch of politeness and friendliness, yet didn’t cease to let down their guard.

After observing the site for two days, Chu Xiang felt that the base was not bad, determining that they could stay for a few more days for  a break. She said, “The vegetables that they are growing are all very good. We can exchange some of our items and pickle the food to make them last longer. Keep this location in mind— we can go to other spots later, but if we ever have a shortage of food, we can always return.”

“Okay,” Xiao Jin nodded and made a mark on the map. He carefully looked at the routes around the site and memorized the location of the place.

Xiao Cheng poked Xiao Ai who didn’t speak, “Why are you unhappy? The captain said it’s good here, so don’t you think it’s suited for you to stay here? Maybe after the base develops further, you can continue to do research without running around. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

Xiao Ai glared at him, “If it’s that nice, perhaps you plan to stay as well?”

“Of course not. I have to follow my brother and the captain to kill zombies. Since you have so much knowledge, you can only put it to good use if you remain at the base,” Xiao Cheng avoided Xiao Ai’s eyes as he felt a slight pang in his heart after saying so. However, he knew that he wasn’t going to leave his brother, but he couldn’t keep putting Xiao Ai in danger as well. Hence, this was the best result.

But Xiao Ai was no fool to his true intentions. Feeling rather annoyed and ironic, she hammered him with a hard punch, got up and ran back to the room.

Chu Xiang dropped a crystal core and smashed it on Xiao Cheng’s forehead, “Aren’t you going to coax her?”

Xiao Cheng rubbed the place where he was beaten and muttered, “I won’t go; isn’t she wasting her talents by running around with us? Besides, we can’t protect her. Her good skills would mean nothing if she encountered high-level zombies.”

Xiao Jin looked at the map and spoke without raising his head, “Then let’s leave her here. Perhaps she would get to  live without meeting a hypocritical person like Peng Peng again. Or there might be a chance that someone in the base would be willing to protect her and help her out when zombies attack. Also, she might be able to eat and drink peacefully in this base. With her advanced research skills, she could be valued here and live a good life.”

Xiao Cheng stopped and frowned. Xiao Jin laughed before slapping the map on his head, “Don’t be stupid— if even you can’t protect her, do you think that this base can protect her? This base doesn’t seem much safer than the outside world. Besides, did you even think about what she wanted before arranging things for her like that?”

“I…” Xiao Cheng was speechless. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that it was a bad move for Xiao Ai to stay alone since there was nothing he could do if she were to ever encounter danger. He fidgeted restlessly on his seat before rushing to find Xiao Ai within two minutes.

Xiao Jin shook his head, “Xiao Cheng is really asking for trouble. Oh well, now he has to coax her for it.”

Chu Xiang looked at him as she laid down on the sofa, closed her eyes and said, “It seems that you are very experienced. Let’s not discuss your brother— would you like to go around the base to see if there are any girls who make your heart flutter?”

“Why are you talking about me? What about you? Why don’t you go and see if there is a man who moves you?” Xiao Jin laughed when he finished speaking, “I do wonder, what kind of man can make your heart flutter? Why can’t I think of any possibility of that happening?”

“I suppose I would fall for someone; someone who I will lock gazes with undoubtedly, even in a sea of people. Though, with how filthy the world has become, I think the only type of people I can keep my eyes on are zombies, but I digress; I don’t have such strong tastes,” Chu Xiang pulled the blanket over her body and whispered, “I’ll sleep for a while. Call me up when it’s time to eat.”

“Okay,” Xiao Jin folded the map and put it down. After looking at her for a moment, he went to the other side of the room with light steps, trying not to disturb her.

Who would have guessed that the peace only lasted for half a minute before a commotion broke out outside. Chu Xiang immediately opened her eyes, turned over and sat up, “Go and call Xiao Cheng and Xiao Ai; I’ll go out and have a look.”

Xiao Jin responded and ran upstairs quickly. When Chu Xiang went out, she saw several outsiders nearby who were as confused as she was while the people in the base took up their weapons and looked nervous.

Chu Xiang ran to the base manager Zhou Zhen and asked, “What happened? Is there an enemy attack?”

Zhou Zhen glanced at her, “It’s just a fight sparked from revenge with the Dawn Base. You stay away and don’t get involved so as not to get hurt.”

“Dawn?” Chu Xiang was a little surprised. They chose this side when the road split into two directions because they knew that there wasn’t going to be much to see at the Dawn Base. Who would have ever thought that these two bases were at each other’s throats.

Chu Xiang retreated to a place that was a moderate distance away from the battlefield to watch as it was best not to participate until she knew what the contradiction between them was. Besides, it was none of their business as they were just passing by.
