It took Kai a moment to realize why the spindle was so important, but yeah, considering that Ember had been working with nothing more than sticks, stones and a few needle like bones to make clothes, a tool like a spindle would likely be a massive improvement.

The spindle itself wouldn’t be that difficult to craft since it was a simple hand version and not the larger medieval tool Kai had thought of first. She was slightly disappointed about that at first, but just seeing her daughter so happy quickly washed that feeling away.

After Ember had talked to her, the excitement hardly died down and while most of her daughters weren’t as hyperactive as the little girl, they still shared the sense of joy about the change. How could they not when their hive had been given such a grand opportunity to grow?

Kai couldn’t help but smile at their eagerness as she worked through what they all had to tell her.

It turned out that Ember was by no means the only one who had gotten a class the moment the change occurred. Artemis for example became a [huntress] and Tiffany an [architect]. The latter of the two was somewhat of a surprise and Kai had expected her to get something like [builder] or [forewoman] instead.

Still, the majority of her daughters hadn’t received a class right off the bat and they had one thing in common, they weren’t quite set in their ways yet. Sure, they might have been part of Tiffy’s building group for example, but that didn’t mean this was what they wanted, though they did unlock the option of obtaining the [builder] class.

In Kai’s opinion it was better this way, because from what her daughters told her, they wouldn’t be able to change their class for a whole 6 months after obtaining theirs. 6 months might normally not sound like that much time, but she hadn’t even been on this planet for that long, which meant that for her daughters it was like they would have to wait for more than a lifetime.

There was one thing that had Kai worried though. Anna had been suspiciously silent this whole time and a smug expression was plastered on her face, as if someone had just confirmed something to her. Kai could only dread the reason and hope that it wasn’t a weird class like [Royal Battle Headmaid] or she would never be able to go anywhere without Anna again. She didn’t have anything against her daughter, but there was such a thing like privacy and personal space, both of which she very much enjoyed.

After her daughters calmed down somewhat everything else sped up and Kai didn’t even get the chance to look at the rest of the explanations. She spent the rest of her day planning the 5 fields of the second settlement quest together with Tiffany. Kai hadn’t thought it would take this long, but there had been multiple things to go over.

The first problem had been that her daughter had wanted to build the fields on the other side of the river. There they would have all the place for agriculture without limiting the building area of the grand capital city Tiffany had in mind. It was a bit unreasonable for the near future however and Kai had been forced to put a bit of a damper on the girl. They could relocate the fields in the future if needed and it would take ages for them to reach such a large population.

Then they had to figure out a way to irrigate their fields, because of the unreliable rain situation and settled down on small trenches. Both of them weren’t really happy with that solution though and would change it the moment they figured out how to build a water wheel. The maintenance of a dirt trench with flowing water was just too bothersome to be more than something temporary.

With that decided Tiffany took her girls to finish that work. She made it a point to take especially those with her that hadn’t decided on a class yet, to have them try a different kind of work, the work of a farmer. With some luck a few of them chose to remain on the fields so Tiffany wouldn’t have to look after that.

They had planned the fields further down river to avoid any kind of water pollution and would grow one of the larger bushes with yellowish sweet fruits. There sadly wasn’t anything similar to wheat around, at least they couldn’t tell.

Kai knew that most of the modern plants hadn’t been more than some grass in the beginning and had to be cultivated quite a lot to change to something better, but she had never bothered to look further into that. Now that came biting her back, not that anyone could fault her for it, her situation was a bit unique, and the bush had been somewhat of a safe pick. The plant seemed to be comfortable with the environment and was edible.

Kai hoped that they could use the hint for magical farming to speed the plants' growth up. This would increase their food production quite a lot, which in turn would free up more hands for other tasks and as a result increase the productivity of their processing industry, bringing them a step closer to their own industrialization.

There were a lot of ifs and whens inside there though and Kai didn’t want to get ahead of herself. Instead she took some time to read through the rest of her system explanations.

[Settlement quests]
Settlement quests are quests that have to be completed by all the inhabitants together and will improve the settlement in some way. Not all of these quests are visible to the population however and it is the responsibility of the governor to see them through.

This one was fairly simple, yet there was a hidden meaning in those two sentences. These quests weren’t only meant to increase the settlement in the literal sense, but also increase the worth of it. A city with more and better quests would be a lot more appealing to workers and all kinds of organizations. Those organizations would then in turn offer even more quests creating a bit of an attraction loop.

The system thus created another field of competition next to the already existing market and basically forced the governor to constantly improve or be left behind. The only thing that got in the way of this was the citizen requirement to level your settlement. By her guess this would unlock quests of a higher quality. There were a lot of things that didn’t get explained though, like could the settlement deteriorate in some other way than losing too much of its population and what determined the difficulty of settlement quests. Was it the population, the boons you already have or even a mix of both?

Again, there were many things Kai wanted to know, but had no option to obtain the knowledge about them.

[Analyze]
Analyze is a system skill that allows the user to look at the [status] of their target. The amount of information shown depends on the power difference.

This skill was somewhat similar to the skill [identify], just a lot more useful in her opinion. [Identify] gave you a lot of information about something so long as the skill had a high enough level, but what one did with that knowledge was up to themselves. [Analyze] on the other hand was less focused on figuring out what something was and more on giving you information about the things power and abilities.

Based on this skill she could pretty much guess the function of the other one, but still looked at it.

[Block analyze]
Analyze is a lot less effective on beings with this skill and will block attempts from those with lower or equal strength altogether.
The hive mind designated Brian is able to strengthen this skill temporarily. The effect and length depends on the amount and strength of all hive members.

The second part of the skill surprised Kai a bit, but not overly so. A hive’s strength was its cohesion so it made at least some sense for Brian to be able to influence this skill. She just needed to unlock the skills first, which wasn’t going to be easy and required them to study mana extensively.

After that she tried out the [map] and the [laws]. The [map] function created a 3 dimensional hologram in her vision that she could spin around, zoom in and zoom out of. The thing didn’t actually appear in front of her and was likely something that the system just projected into her mind, a thought she wasn’t too comfortable with, but she was able to share the projection. She couldn’t give someone permanent access to the map however, much to the disappointment of Tiffany. This was likely a function that had to be unlocked through settlement quests.

The [laws] section was somewhat more interesting and understandably empty the moment she opened it. Kai was able to write down laws here and everyone that was a member of the settlement could access this. It did take a lot of concentration for everyone who wasn’t the governor however and wasn’t something a normal person would bother looking at.

Kai chuckled a bit to herself at the thought of the system wanting to make it easier to look at the laws, yet somehow it didn’t want to. It was as if it couldn’t decide and just settled for a compromise in the end.

Despite it being difficult to access the laws for everyone else, Kai decided to play around with things for the next week. She kind of lost herself while doing this as she tried to figure out a way to put down the foundation of some things that needed a proper economy and infrastructure, both of which her daughters lacked. They just weren’t enough for stuff like that yet.

Kai did try to keep track of the other things, but she was always a bit distracted and her daughters urged her to complete her laws first so she only knew the most important things, one of which was the reason she had to stop creating the base of a society, of her society.

She was in the process of putting down the basics for a healthcare system when Brian gave her a warning of top priority. To put it simply, they had company!
