Title: Silent Lover Author: Qiang Tang Translated by Condz Edited by Asaki

Shen Yu had just returned inside the carriage when there came a sharp yell from the distance, and a flare flew up and burst in the sky.

“Assassins! Protect the royals! There are assassins!”

The winter hunt group had just set up tents to make camp and were caught unprepared. However, Emperor Ye’s personal guards and Zhenbei Wang’s troops were well trained. They quickly surrounded Emperor Ye and the other two within a tight circle and pulled out their weapons, ready to face the enemy.

“Could it be mountain bandits?” The Princess was scared ashen faced and urged her white colt forward to squeeze between the two men.

Xiao Xiye thought so, but still said calmly, “How could there be bandits under Xuanxiao’s rule? Besides, there is no trading route going through Langjuxu Mountain, who are bandits supposed to rob? The wild beasts? It’s probably Xiongnu.”

Lanjuxu Mountain was too arduous and off the beaten path. It was likely to be Xiongnu crossing the border to make offense.

In a moment, there appeared a group of people wielding blades and guns charging forward. They wore leather armour and pelts, and had on round metal hats. Sure enough, it was the clothing of Xiongnu.

At a rough glance it was around two to three hundred people.

The guards changed their defensive formation. The horse carriage was by itself a ways away, exposed outside of the circle of protection.

“Ya!” Zhenbei Wang rode the black stallion like the wind and was beside the carriage in the blink of an eye.

“My Lord!” Song Qing held the reins with his left hand, and his sword with his right hand.

“Don’t worry about us here, take him away first.”

“Yes!”

Zhenbei Wang gave the order calmly, and without a second thought Song Qing turned the carriage to leave. Zhenbei Wang’s orders did not need questioning. If Shen Yu remained, he would only cause extra effort and need for protection.

The attacking Xiongnu had already arrived and their violence was immediately apparent. It was as if they had no care for their own lives, nor any strategy, and simply charged towards the troops. They killed whoever they saw with no thought of defending themselves.

“These Northern barbarians are truly savage!” Emperor Ye saw some Xiongnu throw their own bodies onto weapons just to be able to cut down an enemy. They were as brave and fierce as the rumors said.

Although the Jing had brilliant military formations, and the guards were all highly trained, they still had less than half the number of men compared to the Xiongnu. After being charged by the selfless Xiongnu, the formation was a little defeated and it was hard to guarantee that it wouldn’t become a messy battle.

“Dairou, go after the horse carriage and leave with them first.” Emperor Ye instructed in a hurry.

“Ah? Alright, take care of yourself.” The Princess really didn’t want to be with Shen Yu and Song Qing, but with the enemy already here and with her own life at stake, she had to put aside her hatred of them.

“Xuanxiao, looks like these Northern barbarians forgot about the peace treaty that was signed after you killed their King two years ago! They’ve forgotten the name of Zhenbei Wang and now dare to send scouts to covet our great land of Jing!” Emperor Ye said angrily.

Zhenbei Wang did not make a sound. He kicked the black stallion in the belly and charged into the midst of the Xiongnu. With one cut he split the head of a Xiongnu in half, like an invincible tiger in a group of sheep.

As the horse carriage rushed away, Shen Yu saw more than ten Xiongnu attacking from both sides. The carriage was forced to take a risky path along the edge of the cliff.

“Concubine Yin! Concubine Shen Yu! Wait for me! Help me!”

A woman’s frail voice could be heard; it was the Princess shouting for help. Somehow the legs of her white colt had been chopped off by the Xiongnu. She had no choice but to leave it behind and seek shelter from Shen Yu and Song Qing, with five or six Xiongnu chasing after her.

Shen Yu tapped Song Qing’s shoulder to indicate that he should slow down to allow the Princess to board the carriage.

After all, he and the Princess weren’t mortal enemies. If he was the one left behind, he would for sure hope that someone would lend a helping hand to save him.

“You don’t have to care about her.” Song Qing wanted to say this to Shen Yu, but decided to keep his mouth shut. Protecting the relatives of Zhenbei Wang was also his duty.

Song Qing slowed down, and seeing her lifeline, the Princess used all the strength in her body to catch up. Her makeup had run from her tears and her messy hair was streaming behind her.

Seeing that the Xiongnu had also almost caught up, Shen Yu reached out his hand. The Princess grabbed onto it  and climbed onto the carriage with much difficulty.

“Thank you, thank you for forgetting the past and saving me.” The Princess scrambled unsteadily into the carriage in a fright. She suddenly turned around, eyes hardened with resentment, and shoved Shen Yu forward.

To pull the Princess inside, Shen Yu was crouched at the edge of the carriage. With a push from the behind by the Princess, he lost his footing and fell from the carriage.
