Characters in this chapter:

Sapphiras Perfectio, 2nd son of the Earl of Aldridge

Aurora Steinfeld, daughter of the Duke of Bloomfield

Veritas Perfectio, 1st son of the Earl of Aldridge

Next day.

As I sat in my usual seat, all of my classmates looked at me as if they wanted to say something.

If you’re curious, you could have just asked me directly, but you don’t have the courage to do that. If you ask me, I’ll tell you anything. I’m even waiting for them to talk to me as soon as possible.

This is a long way to making 100 friends.

If you sigh quietly at the difficulty of achieving your goal, the uninvited Casey will come towards you as soon as he enters the classroom. He must be really bored. Rather than worrying about me, I think it would be better to find something else to do.

“What’s the matter with you? Isn’t it useless to come to the classroom? You’re getting expelled anyway right?”

“No, that’s wrong?”

“Ha? Did you, by any chance, use Perfectio’s power to silence the principal?”

“……I see. That’s how you see the principal. As the honourable head of this Royal Academy, the principal who was personally appointed by His Majesty……fu~un.”

I’m sure he said that to humiliate me, but it’s like saying publicly that the principal is someone driven by money and power. I wonder what the principal would think if she heard that.

Casey’s face turned red as he realised he had misspoken. If he gets angry and rants so often, wouldn’t he eventually die of rage? People seem to live longer if they don’t get angry.

Casey seems to want to bring me down somehow, but I’m 25 years old and have been through a lot, and I don’t get down or depressed over the slightest thing, young boy. I’ve been through both the sour and the sweet.

Said to be the disgrace of the family, the feeble Sapphiras doesn’t retort no matter what is said. A sense of superiority can be obtained from hurting Sapphiras like that. Casey probably fills his heart by doing so.

However, he is quite stressed by the fact that no matter what he says to me, I don’t feel any depression at all, but rather talks back to him. But that’s none of my business.

He glared at me and went back to his seat.

The whole classroom was looking at us, and when I looked around, my classmates hurriedly looked forward.

It must be interesting for the classmates to see us interact with each other. I would have been happy to watch it if I were a third party.

In the afternoon, I got a call from my parents’ house. My brother must have reported it to father anyway. But the filling is sweet. The matter of magic was dismissed last night. But it could be a good start for me. It was just yesterday, but I’ll just have to cut out the hassle quickly. For now, I’ve decided to respond to my father’s call after saying a few words to Aurora to let her know that I’d like her help with the scholarship.

I also added that I might be disowned. This is a family that is ashamed of me. I’m sure they’ll take this opportunity to disown me.

“You’ve made a good decision. I have no problem with your situation at home. I will talk to my father, so please submit the scholarship application to the academy. Also, please keep in mind that you will have to sit for the examinations for the practical magic skills and the magic paper.”

“Un, thank you very much.”

I bowed my head to Aurora.

I have no problem with the practical skills, but I honestly don’t have confidence in the paper. After all, since I was manipulating magic based on experience and intuition, I’m totally clueless about the theoretical stuff.

I can probably manage without having to rely on someone else, but it’s not a bad thing to have the backing of the Duke of Bloomfield, whose family ranks higher than my own family.

I don’t know what kind of person the Duke is, but I can tell from Aurora what kind of environment she has grown up in. The Duke’s family is an old aristocracy with a long history, but surely her father must be a man of vision and shrewdness. If he decides that it will be profitable, he must be someone who has the breadth and strength to accept even if it is something that is very different from his values up until now.

I’m sure he already knows that I’m a disgrace to Perfectio, and of course he’ll ask the principal about me at the academy. I acted somewhat bossy to the principal so I don’t know how it will be judged. It might be a good idea to keep in mind the possibility of quitting the academy without becoming a scholarship student. The age of 14 can be a bit of a shackle, but if I sell my magic skills, I should be able to survive for about 2 years. The experience I gained as an adventurer in my previous life should come in handy.

By the way, it seems that anyone who is a student of this academy is eligible for the scholarship system. I thought it might be a bit too lenient that students with money could also be accepted, but most of them are proud to be nobles and wouldn’t use the scholarship system.

In other words, my father, who seems to have a pride higher than that of Mount Scorprus, the highest mountain in the continent, is likely to have his hair stand on end if he finds out that a son of the Perfectio family is attending the academy on a scholarship.

I’d be disowned today anyway.

After school, I went to the Earl of Aldridge’s house. The mansion is about half an hour by carriage from the academy, in an area lined with aristocratic mansions. I could have gone quickly by transfer, but I deliberately used a horse-drawn omnibus. After all, Sapphiras had been confined for most of his life, so in many ways he was too ignorant of the world. Besides, I would like to see what the modern royal capital looks like. I decided to go at a leisurely pace, as I could come back quickly by transfer and there would be no need to rush.

Unlike 150 years ago, this country and the surrounding countries are stable and peaceful. There are shops to peek into, or unique food from street stalls. One after another, things of interest catch my eye. When I was unintentionally looking around, I was mistaken for a country bumpkin and the lady sitting next to me laughed at me.

By the way, I was also told about a recommended restaurant, which I would like to try if I get the chance.

While enjoying a leisurely tour of the capital from the train window, we arrived at a stop near the mansion. I got off the omnibus and walked towards the mansion. The thought of being able to say goodbye to the fence today lifted my spirits.

When I arrived at Perfectio’s mansion, I was greeted by the steward. Without changing his expression, he shows me to my father’s office.

This man probably doesn’t think anything of me either. I am probably just a useless second son without magical powers, that’s the extent of his perception of me. But still, what is it like to have magical powers? There are people who are useless to the world even if they have magical power, and there are people who work hard for others even if they don’t have magical power. A person’s value cannot be determined by their magical power.

I am sure that the 5 year old ‘me’ thought about working hard outside of magic power because he had a sense of what I was like in my previous life. If my parents had been able to respect my feelings at that time, I wouldn’t have become a complete stranger with blood ties.

“Sir, Sapphiras sama is here to see you.

“……Enter”

A very grumpy voice. If you didn’t want to see me so badly, you could have just told me in writing that I am disowned and that would be the end of it. What on earth is he going to say by taking the trouble to call me in?

The steward opened the heavy door and urged me to enter the room, then left the room.

He didn’t even look at me while staring at the documents, and he didn’t tell me to sit down, so I stood up and waited for my father to open his mouth. After a few moments, my father took his eyes off the papers he had unfolded and brought me into view.

“Veritas reported to me. I told you not to do anything that would bring disgrace to our family and to Veritas.”

“What on earth are you talking about? I don’t remember anything about what you’re saying, Father.”

“I heard you cheated in magic class!”

My father, exasperated, banged on the desk with his fist. If it was me a little while ago, I would have been unable to speak because of that alone. However, such threats have no effect on me now. But he is a short-tempered man.

But now that I’m face to face with him, I understand something.

Sapphiras’ father’s magic power is nothing compared to mine. My ancestors may have been quite skilled, but this generation is just an ordinary magician sitting on the laurels of their ancestors.

“With all due respect, I have done nothing wrong.”

“I know you can’t use magic because you don’t have magical powers! Cheating proudly at the Academy! I can’t stand it anymore! From the very beginning, I was ashamed of the fact that someone like you who lacked magical powers was in my lineage! You are no longer my son! Get out!”

Needless to say, he was repulsed by his own son. I felt a pain deep in my chest. This is not my pain, 14-year-old Saphiras is hurting.

It’s only natural. Even this man is a father and family. Even though he was shunned, I had no idea that he was even considered repulsive.

I thought about talking back for Sapphiras’ sake, but decided not to. Even if I don’t retort now, he will come to realise in time. Above all, it would be useless to say anything to such a man.

“……Earl Aldridge, thank you for all you’ve done for me till now. Then, good day to you.”

In truth, I don’t really think I’ve been indebted to you in the slightest, but I’ve been indebted to you for at least 14 years. For an aristocrat, it wasn’t a good thing, but from the perspective of a commoner’s life, it was reasonably luxurious.

Even though he read on his own accord, Sapphiras’ mind was surprisingly filled with trivia from his indulgence in reading during his confinement. This will also come in handy in the future.

I have no regrets, and I have nothing to take out of this mansion. With a noble bow, I turn on my heel and turn my back on my father.

The steward saw me off to the door, but he didn’t say anything to me. He is a man who has served Perfectio for a long time, and I remember that he took care of me in a certain way before he found out that I had no magical power, but he is really heartless. I’m no longer a member of this family, so it doesn’t really matter to me now.

“All right, let’s go home. I have to submit the documents.”

I’ll probably never go through the gate of this house again.

Thinking like that without any emotion, I stretched out and transferred to my room in the dormitory.
