Chapter 46: Take flight!

Lysander sent Erin a glance, and wondered if what he wanted to ask of the blonde was a good idea. After all, Erin's dragon form might have grown, but that didn't mean that Erin knew how to fly. Yet, they had wasted a lot of time, going to Elias's hut, only to find him dead, and get themselves in trouble.

"Rin," Lysander began, as he watched as the blonde blink at him. "Do you think you could fly us to Snowfalls?"

"Fly?" Erin asked. He shook his head. "I don't want to get angry again."

"Maybe, we could learn how to control your transformations? If only because you will be with a clearer head, once you transform," Lysander said. Erin looked at him with wide eyes.

"But, when I turn into a dragon, I am bad," Erin said, not believing, for a second, that he could do good in such a form.

"It doesn't have to be this way," Lysander reached out, and placed a hand on Erin's shoulder. He gave it a light squeeze, and then moved closer to Erin. "Just think, if we fly there, we will be on time for the festival."

Lysander had been to Snowfalls once or twice. He knew there was a festival around this time of the year. The natives liked to celebrate the summer, and its bounty.

"Festival?" Erin was tempted. Festivals were fun, and sweets were being sold at every corner, during one. A pang of sadness overtook him, when he remembered the last festival he had been on. Back when his parents were still alive.

"Yes, festival," Lysander said, moving to hug the blonde. "Our first festival, together."

"But what if I eat you? What if you tug at one of my horns, and then I eat you?" Erin might be tempted, but he wasn't about to risk Lysander. For, even though Belle adopted him, Lysander was still the one with whom he spent his time with.

"Then I will swat you on the nose!" Lysander said with a giggle. Then, he pressed Erin's nose three times. "Just like that."

Despite himself, Erin giggled as well. Paul whined from the side, and the two looked at the wolf.

"How is Paul going to come? If I fly us, you can hold on to me, but Paul can't," Erin said. He didn't want to leave the wolf behind. For, Paul was a friend.

"I can make him some cloth straps," Lysander suggested. He was better at making things out of fabrics than Erin. He could make a simple strap. Getting the wolf to stay put, though, was the challenge.

"Paul, do you want to fly?" The wolf tilted its head to the side, just like he used to do when he was a puppy. Erin giggled once more. "I'll take that as a yes."

Lysander got to work, then. He made a strap for himself, and one for Paul. Then, he looked at Erin expectantly.

"Right, dragon transformation!" Erin yelled. Nothing happened. "Uhm..."

"Focus on your inner dragon," Lysander pipped in. In all the stories about dragons, the shifters had a connection to their inner dragons. Surely, Erin did too?

"Right," Erin blushed, at how silly his shout had been. He sat down on the grass, and closed his eyes.

There was something big at the corner of his mind. Yet, it was slumbering. Erin decided to tug at the tail of the dragon. He heard rumbling.

"Come on, wake up!" Erin said out loud. He was not going to just give up. For, this was important. He tugged at the dragon's tail once more. Now, he could see the creature. It was golden, and big. The dragon cracked one blue eye.

"Hello," Erin said, as the dragon let out a puff of air. "I want to fly."

"Freedom?" The dragon asked. Erin shook his head.

"No, just fly to Snowfalls. I would like to carry Ly and Paul there," Erin said. The dragon let out even more smoke.

"Not a pack animal," the dragon sounded insulted. Erin was quick to clarify.

"Ly is my mate, and Paul is my puppy," Erin said. The dragon's eyes softened.

"Family?" The dragon asked.

"Yes, family!" Erin was glad, that the being finally understood him.

"Then fly," and Erin felt the same magical surge, he always felt, when he turned into a dragon. Yet, his mind was clear. He could see himself. Lysander and Paul looked tiny when compared to him. He laid on the grass, so that Lysander could get the two straps around his bulk.

"You are beautiful, Rin," Lysander said, when he placed his hand on Rin's sides. "I bet that not even Givontair the White is as pretty as you."

Erin blushed at that. His inner dragon was glad that its mate was singing its praise. It was practically preening.

Soon, Lysander had Paul and himself strapped to Erin's bulk, and he hugged the wolf for good measure.

"You should fly to the mountains now, Rin," Lysander said. Erin placed one foot before the other, and stood. Soon, he was running down the road, and flapping his wings. He knew, as if he has flown before, that this was what he needed to do, to be able to fly.

When the golden dragon took to the skies, Erin couldn't believe how free he felt. There, up above the trees, were just white fluffy clouds, which seemed hundreds of miles away from him. This high up, Erin could see the mountains. He took a left turn, and began to fly towards them.

As Lysander kept hugging Paul, the wolf had his tongue out, and seemed happy as can be. The cloth straps held true. Erin kept on flying, until night fell. By that time, he had reached the foot of the mountains.

He landed in a clearing, with a small stream running through it. Erin felt tired, but happy. He thanked his inner dragon for letting him fly, and then turned back into a boy. When he did so, he yawned, and then laid on the grass to sleep, exhausted, but light as a feather.
