Not yet!

Ary's shout.

"What! Rose, get them back! Sherloul, get going! Full speed!"

I give the order in rapid succession.

Rose's ivy wraps around Kareen and Ary. They follow me as I hurry to the carriages.

I glance at the rose ivy. The area where the liquid has just been applied is discolored black. It looks like a bruise. They look like the ones that were carved on Taura's face when we first met.

A curse. And at the cost of human life. ....... Sorcerer!

I jump into the carriage that Scherrleur drives toward us. The scroll of manifestation continues, and Arli and Karin roll in, wrapped in the rose ivy that grows from it.

That's when it happened.

The rest of the assassins that Kalene had knocked out. Their bodies also swelled up and then exploded, one after another, spraying liquid. This must be what Ary saw.

The splattered liquid stained the alley and the walls.

A carriage runs out of the alley in the nick of time.

"Karin, I'm going back to the inn. Are you ready?"

I ask Kalin, who has just gotten out of Rose's ivy and is wriggling to her feet.

"Oh, my God! Oh, I'll do it. That one doesn't look like it has a clue. What do you got, Rust? Ary?"

So far, there's no sign of another attack.

Ary answers Karin.

I breathe a sigh of relief and tell Sherl to slow down a little.

Full speed is hard on the beast and the carriages. It is not advisable to keep it up for too long.

Still, the carriages are moving through the night at high speed.

"About those assassins, the first one who exploded seemed to have done it of his own volition, but the rest were activated by someone else, I think. They completely stunned you, didn't they, Karin?"

I tell them my guess.

"Yeah. I hit him almost as hard as I could. So there was a being watching."

Kalin sits down on a chair with a thud and crosses her arms.

The carriage shakes under the weight of the sword still in her hand.

"Oh. A far-sighted magic eye like Loa's is quite rare, and if the assassin and the being he was looking at were connected by a magic elemental path, I would have been able to detect it. So maybe it's a sighting."

The sorcerer, I presume.

"Yes. Almost certainly. Taura will be pleased. She's been depressed because she hasn't had any leads.

While Karin and I were talking, a carriage was rushing into the inn where we were staying.
