Chapter 27
TRanslator: Missme

‘What is he trying to ask?’

I’m not sure why, but insecurity has arisen in me.

My mouth felt as though it were drying up.

I waited for Caleb’s words without even swallowing my saliva.

Caleb, who was shutting his lips, shook his head softly.

As if to dismiss the idea.

That behaviour heightened my anxiety.

It was while I was staring at Caleb while holding simply a bouquet of flowers.

He eventually opened his mouth.

“Why did Lady choose to leave your profession as an actress and join my department as a deputy?”

My heartfelt like it was dropping to the ground at the time.

As though I were racing in a good mood.

I, together with Count Van Der, have previously developed an answer and reasoning for this question.

I was, however, embarrassed to be asked this out of the blue.

Perhaps it was because my opponent’s name was Caleb “…

Obviously, I enjoy acting. But before I became an actor, I was educated as to the heir to the family by my late adoptive parents. The two wanted me to be the family’s successor. However, it did not work out in the end.”

But, unlike my sinking heart, the sound that came out of my lips was calm.

I was startled even as I said it.

“So when Count Van Der announced her intention to take over as my guardian and make me her successor, I was reminded of the desires of my late adoptive parents, who raised me, and I couldn’t refuse. And, at the Count’s request, I became your deputy, Lord.”

I asked gently, after explaining all the reasons why I had planned ahead of time.

“If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.”

“No, I don’t.”

“I assume that’s the only thing you were curious about.”

Caleb’s attitude seemed odd for some reason as I gazed at him in relief.

As in a person who is really upset.

‘What was the last thing he heard me say?

‘As I reflected on my recollections, wondering whether I had made a mistake, I understood that what I had said may have been misleading.’

Was Caleb depressed because I said that that’s the only thing he was curious about me?

‘I was relieved but…’

The truth was this, but looking at Caleb’s expression, I believed I misunderstood him for upset, therefore I was attempting to rectify the issue.

Caleb, on the other hand, was faster than me.

“Can I then ask you one more question?”

What exactly is it?

Don’t tell me he spotted anything strange again.

And here I thought I’d just gotten over the hurdle.

“Yes, of course.”

I was a little nervous since I didn’t know what Caleb would ask me, but I pretended it was nothing and nodded.

“I heard other people refer to Lady as ‘Lena’ when I went to the theatre earlier. Is it Lady’s nickname?”

“No, that’s not my nickname.”

Lena was now my stage name at the theatre, as well as another way to say ‘Elena.’

I was always referred to as “Lena” in the nursery until the late Baron couple adopted me and renamed me “Elena Oreu.”

As a result, when the late Baron couple died and I went to work as a commoner, I was automatically entitled to use the name ‘Lena.’

‘However, I don’t have to talk about it.’

There was far too much information. Caleb is really not required to know.

For the time being, that is all…

“It is only a stage name. Another stage name I go by as an actor.”

It would be preferable to inform him up to this point.

“Does anyone in the theatre know what Lady’s real surname is?”

“Some of them are aware. I’m referring to the two you saw before, Lord. Other than them, no one is likely to know.”

“I assumed everyone in the theatre would be aware.”

Caleb’s voice was full of twists and turns.

I had no option but to give him a sour grin.

“It’s because I didn’t inform them.” I don’t typically act like an aristocracy, and I’m not recognized as one either. As a result, they are the only people who are aware that I am an aristocracy. On the contrary, the people who knew that I was an actor were Count Van Der and……”

I shuddered and closed my mouth unconsciously as I pushed out another finger.

I almost brought up the Crown Prince.

“Many people, including you, Lord Egon, were aware of the reality.”

“It seemed like a lot of people knew for sure.”

Caleb, thankfully, did not inquire as to why I was hesitant.

Silence ensued, yet the carriage came to a complete stop without feeling uncomfortable.

I spotted the mansion through the window.

Caleb deftly opened the carriage door, stepped out, and stretched out to me with his large gloved hands.

“Please be careful.”

Without hesitation, I took his hand in mine.

It was strange at first to grasp someone’s hand, but I’m becoming used to it.

In light of this, I believe that humans are unquestionably adaptable animals.

I looked back at Caleb and opened my mouth as soon as I stepped off the carriage, thanks to his assistance.

“I’d like to thank you for everything you’ve done today. Lord, you even gave me flowers as a gift…… Thank you very much.”

“I appreciate you allowing me to accompany you. I’ve gained a lot from this experience because of you.”

Was there anything out of the ordinary he could call an experience? As far as I recall, the only experiences I offered him were that I owed him too much.

‘In the end, he was just saying it so I wouldn’t feel guilty toward him.’

Caleb added that by the time the idea was conceived.

“Go in first. I’ll see you all the way in and go back.” “See you next time.”

I hurriedly entered the mansion after receiving Caleb’s greeting.

* * * * *****

I placed the flowers Caleb had given me as soon as I walked inside the mansion.

It was one method of drying and preserving the flowers in a bouquet, but I wanted to place them in a vase and have them beautify my room, even if it was inconvenient.

With a bouquet of flowers on the large table, I took scissors and cut the wrapping paper as carefully as possible to avoid damaging the stems.

The flower shop had arranged it, but the rose stem was devoid of thorns and its roots had been severed.

‘Can I simply place it in the vase this way?’

I was looking for a rose vase when I heard a sign not far away.

“Lady?”

I noticed a maid with a familiar face as I looked up.

Of course, I had no idea what her name was.

It’s been more than a month since I’ve been at the mansion, but I haven’t thought about developing a connection with the maids since I’ve been so busy, and I’ve never even heard their names.

Nonetheless, the maid has been courteous to me.

“May I ask what you’re trying to do?”

“Oh, I’ll arrange the flowers and put them in a vase.”

The maid took my word for it and looked at the roses on the table.

“They are lovely yellow roses. Do you like me to fetch you a vase for them, Lady?”

“Oh, that would be wonderful.”

“Please wait a moment.”

The maid who stated this quickly fetched a vase large enough to accommodate the roses.

“Lady, I believe you can put it in here. Did you, by the way, buy the flowers yourself?”

“No, I received it as a gift.”

“Lady, did you receive it as a gift? Yellow roses?”

At that point, the maid’s expression changed.

What’s the matter with her? Not long after I began to have my doubts, I realized why.

“That’s out of the norm. Because of the flower language, yellow roses are rarely presented as gifts.”

“Can you tell me why?”

“The flower language of the yellow rose is jealousy and flawless success. It’s not given as a gift, yet I heard you received it as one.”

“You understand the meaning of flowers.”

“My sister owns and operates a flower shop.”

The maid then assisted me in putting the flowers in, and I left her to clean up the leftovers.

‘Jealousy and flawless success are the flower languages.’

While mounting the stairs to my room with a vase, I stared at the flowers with odd eyes.

Caleb said he wanted to give me this flower because he remembered me as soon as he saw the flowers.

So it was apparent that he merely presented it to me regardless of the flower’s symbolism.

‘I know.’

Why did I want to give it meaning?

I stopped motionless and stared at the roses after placing a vase on a little narrow table in front of the window. For a very long time.

Volume 4. Unexpected encounter

Ahem ahem-

When I turned my head to sound someone clearing their throat, I spotted Lord Vessel standing at the entrance.

When did he arrive?

Lord Vessel greeted me first as I sat at my desk, staring at him.

“Good morning. How was your weekend?”

“Yes, well…”

I slightly nodded my head.

Although it was a surprise to see Lord Vessel greet me first, I did not wish to accept his greetings warmly.

Since he’d still ignore and despise me if I hadn’t processed the monthly report last week.

Lord Vessel appeared to want to say more, but as I feigned to read the papers, he abruptly stopped speaking to me.

Caleb came not long after and seeing him reminded me of what had happened over the weekend.

The bouquet of yellow roses and its flower language

‘Oh, no! Let’s stop thinking and get to work.’

I grabbed a quill pen and gazed at the paperwork while softly patting my cheek.

However, I was unable to focus.

Because of the searing stare that was focused on my face.

I glanced up and discovered Lord Vessel.

He shivered and averted his sight as soon as our gazes touched.

‘What exactly is it?’

Since then, such incidents have occurred regularly.

As a result, I found it impossible to concentrate on the paperwork all morning.

Caleb and Lord Vessel had gone to the training ground, so I was able to focus when they left me alone.

It was shortly after I had left the desk after clearing up my seat.

“Are you heading home?”

“Gasp!”

When I was taken aback by Lord Vessel’s sudden voice, he tilted his head.

“How come you’re surprised?”

“Because the Lord unexpectedly spoke to me. Lord, aren’t you on the training ground?”

“I apologize. I came here during the break to tell the Lady something, but I didn’t mean to surprise you, Lady Oreu.”

Lord Vessel’s humility helped to calm my nerves a little.

“Lord, what do you want to say to me?”

“That’s……”

Lord Vessel leaned down to me with a resolute expression after hesitating.

“Please! “Teach me how to manage paperwork!”

“What?”

I felt a little embarrassed.

He wanted me to teach him how to process paperwork?

“…are you serious?”

“I am serious.”

Lord Vessel gave a nod.

His emerald eyes were serious as he stared at me as if he had made up his mind.

Why is he now asking me to do this?

Was it so shocking that I processed the monthly comprehensive report last time?

But that is not the case with me.

“I apologize, but I refuse.”

“Thank you for…what?”

Lord Vessel wrinkled his brow in response to my comments.

“Why?”

“Do I really need a reason to refuse?”

There was, in fact, a reason.

No! There were 2 reasons!

To begin with, I’ve simply learnt it. I’ve never taught anybody how to do the paperwork.

Second, I remembered Sir Vessel’s reactions to me.

How difficult it was for me to keep an eye on Lord Vessel all last week!

Did it make sense if I readily accepted his request after he troubled me so much last week?

I’ll just say my goodbyes and head home……

“What are you doing there, Lord Vessel?”

“Ah, Commander.”

Sir Vessel turned around, embarrassed at Caleb’s abrupt arrival.

I wasn’t much different, either.

Lord Vessel was followed by Caleb.

“I was talking to the Lady for a while.”

At Lord Vessel’s words, Caleb looked at me, as if he was wondering whether it was true.

Well, that was true, so I agreed with a gentle nod of my head.

“Ah, I see. “Are you finished talking?”

“Yeah, well.”

Edmund nodded and retracted his foot.

Only then did I see a way out. I suppose I’ll be able to go home now.

“Let’s head back to the training ground.”

“But, Commander…”

“I’ll escort Lady Oreu to the entrance of the Knights’ quarter and then return.”

The unexpected words took us all by surprise.

“Do you mean to assist me, Lord?”

“Do you dislike it?”

“No, that’s not it…”

But it’s not like I wanted to accompany him.

“If that’s the case, why don’t I take Lady Oreu instead?”

Lord Vessel’s unexpected interference surprised me.

No, I don’t like that.

“It’s all right, Lord Vessel. I’ll just take your sincerity. Lord Egon made the offer first.”

Phew, I’d rather go with Caleb than him!

I crept up to Caleb’s side.

Lord Vessel, who had been rejected by me, appeared to be in a bad mood.

As if he were a sick child who couldn’t obtain what he desired.

That was none of my responsibility.

I was following in Caleb’s footsteps when I had a thought.

Why was he now volunteering to accompany?

Of course, he has previously favoured me.

Quite a few times, in fact.

But he never escorted me from the office to the entrance of the Knights’ quarter last week.

Caleb was at the training ground in the afternoon, as opposed to me, who had been at the office all day.

This was similar for other Knights, so I would come back home alone, without encountering any other members.

I cast a sidelong glance towards Caleb and heard his voice next to me.

“If you have anything to say to me, feel free to say.”

“Yes?”

“Because you kept staring at me at the office.”

Gasp!

Is that mean…

He was aware that I was staring at him?

If I could, I’d hide in a rat hole.

I didn’t look at him because I needed to say something. I only took a quick glance at him.

Because I was always wondering if Caleb realized the meaning of the yellow flowers and offered them to me since I believed he had feelings for me.

Of course, I knew it was a ridiculous concept, and I knew it was all a result of my misunderstanding and foolish desire.

‘Let’s stay calm.’

He was aware that I was staring at him, but he had no idea why.

I don’t think he has the ability to read other people’s minds.

So all I had to do was give him an appropriate response.

“I remember the roses you gave me the last time. I put it in a vase in my room and it looked lovely. As a result, the room is much brighter.”

But the things that came out of my lips were horrible explanations for why I had been staring at him all morning.

“Is that true? I hope it blooms for a long time and brings you delight, Lady.”

The words that were returned were sweet.

Because the topic simply was enough to make others laugh or treat me like a weirdo.

If someone had responded like me, I would have laughed awkwardly and ignored them, thinking they were a weird person.

Maybe because my opponent’s identity was Caleb.

My face began to warm up once again.

My cheeks were so heated that I could feel them without touching them.

‘Oh, no…’

I averted my gaze and chewed my bottom lip.

I’m hoping this little fever goes away soon.

And I hope this was simply a passing emotion.
