Chapter 29

‘What exactly are these…?’

I stared at my desk, blinked blankly.

The desk, which should have been crammed with quill pens, ink, and paperwork to be processed, was instead crammed with boxes that were so carefully packed that it made my eyes sting.

The boxes were piling up to the point that they were crowding beneath the desk.

‘I’m sure nothing like this existed before I returned home yesterday.’

I’m not sure why this happened to me, so I chose to first glance at the box.

I’ve never bought anything like this before, so these must have arrived mistakenly, and there will be a different owner.

But my name, Elena Oreu, was inscribed all over the box.

‘What in the world are these?’

Accepting presents from unexpected sources made me nervous and hesitant.

Do I have to get rid of it? Or do I simply leave it outside?

I was in the midst of a conflict.

I heard the front door open.

When I turned around, I saw Lord Vessel.

“What? You haven’t opened any of them?”

“What? What do you mean……?”

“The boxes.”

“No way, the sender of this……?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

Lord Vessel proudly braced his chest.

“Open it as soon as possible. I’m confident you’ll enjoy it because I selected the most popular and expensive items at each store.”

I was stunned in the face of a scene that could only be seen in a wild drama.

I could barely talk until I did a lengthy lip flick.

“These, why me……?”

”You mentioned that to me yesterday. I need to make you like me.”

“What?”

“I heard that women usually like these things. This is my first present to make a lady liking me.”

Lord Vessel chuckled.

“What do you think? About my gifts.”

‘No. What is this mad man up to?’

Lord Vessel pushed me to inspect the gifts as soon as possible, even though he couldn’t see my puzzled expression.

But I never considered opening the box.

Because that was just too absurd.

‘Does this have anything to do with what I started yesterday? Because I told him to make me like him?’

Who in the world truly believes and acts in this manner?

…Ah, yes, there was…

I’m looking at the man in front of me.

I’ve been suffering from a throbbing headache.

I had no idea where to begin.

I’ve never seen such a simple person in my life, and I’ve never encountered such a person.

“I believe you misunderstood me, but I didn’t want these.”

“You haven’t even opened the box yet, Lady, how do you know it’s not what you wanted?”

“Perfume, cosmetics, accessories, and the like.”

“How did you find out?”

“……there’s a store logo in the box.”

I indicated the logos scribbled on the outsides of the boxes.

They were all well-known places. I can conceive of a product that reflects the store just by looking at each other.

“And you told me. You’ve chosen the most popular items in each store. It’s not difficult to deduce what’s inside because it’s so clear. Take it back, in any case. Please restore my desk to its original state.”

I raised my voice deliberately.

But instead of moving, Lord Vessel asked me a question.

“What was it about my presents that you didn’t like?” I’ve heard it’s a popular item among women, so why not…… ”

To claim I don’t want it would be an outright lie.

Because I couldn’t even see it when I was ‘Lena’ (as an actor).

Also, they were from well-known stores, and they may have refused to serve me even if I disclosed my aristocratic status.

One needs to be at least Lord Vessel’s rank, a Marquis or such, to be served at those stores.

However, if I take things here, I must do Lord Vessel a favour.

That’s something I couldn’t do.

“I mean, you misinterpret it. I suggest you should rethink why I said it.”

Lord Vessel was deafeningly quiet for a time.

He just looks at me with a frustrated expression on his face.

It was back then.

Caleb walked in after I heard the door open.

“Why are you standing there, Lord Vessel?”

“I am sorry, Commander. No, I was having a brief conversation with Lady Oreu.”

“Ah, I see.”

Caleb, who was closing the door in agreement, noticed my desk and came to a halt.

‘He must have been pretty embarrassed.’

I thought as I saw the door close.

Actually, this is a rather reasonable response.

Even I, the person in concern, had something to say, but Caleb would be mortified if he saw it.

“Lady Oreu, the things on the desk…….”

“These are my gifts.”

Caleb’s gaze was drawn to Lord Vessel.

“Gifts?”

“That’s right.”

“May I inquire as to why?”

“I’m sorry about it. I can’t tell you since it’s a private matter.”

Lord Vessel lowered his head in distress.

That’s correct, he must be embarrassed by these things.

But I couldn’t put it into words.

As Lord Vessel stated, this was a personal matter for him.

“I’m not going to bother you with any more questions, but are you going to leave your desk like that?”

“No, I was on my way to clean it up.” (Edmund)

“I shall assist you” (Caleb)

Caleb stated as he removed his uniform jacket.

He even pulled up his shirt sleeves, apparently to show that he was serious about moving.

“Then I, too…….”

“We’ll move on our own, so Lady, please take a seat. Lady’s seat will be full, therefore I recommend you use my seat for a moment.”

“What? No, I’m perfectly fine.”

“Please have a seat, each of you. I’m the one who made this happen, therefore I’ll clean it up myself.”

“I believe it’s a lot to clean up on your own.”

“It’s fine, I can handle it.”

“Doing it alone takes a long time.”

Lord Vessel made no additional comments to Caleb’s statements.

Instead, they just remove the boxes in silence.

And, thanks to Caleb’s idea, I had to sit in a chair.

‘Can I be alone like this for a long time?’

I felt ashamed, so I drew my toes together and glanced down.

Fortunately, the boxes were removed faster than I expected, and I was relieved to see a clear desk.

After that, everything went back to normal.

Except for Lord Vessel’s increased tendency to glance at me.

I knew why Lord Vessel was behaving that way, but I wasn’t about to give him the answer he desired.

‘Let’s see how difficult it is.’

* * * * *****

Edmund was struggling, just as Elena had predicted.

Of course, he felt confident in his ability to achieve.

The harsh taste of failure was unexpected.

‘I suggest you should rethink why I said it.’

Edmund was unable to grasp Elena’s comments.

She told him he needed to make her like him.

Edmund has seen ladies who enjoyed what he had given Elena today.

Of course, Edmund did not provide those items.

When he saw his mother and younger sister, he listened to his friend’s concerns and was aware of their lover.

Edmund had never given such items to a lady other than her family, to begin with.

Edmund was often surrounded by ladies, maybe due to his birth, tidy look, and position as Vice-Commander of the Royal Knights.

Whether he likes it or not, the other person already likes him and is excited to meet him in many situations.

Edmund couldn’t find the answer readily because he had lived such a life.

It was the same on the way back to the Marquis’s estate from the Knights’ quarter.

‘How can I get her approval? What in the world does she expect from me?’

Edmund passed through his mind and through the Marquis’s estate entrance, frustrated.

Edmund removed his uniform coat and gave it to a servant who was standing nearby.

“How about my mother and father?”

“Neither of them has arrived yet.”

He assumed the returning voice belonged to a woman, not a servant.

It is just too familiar.

Edmund’s expression tightened.

As he looked back, he noticed a blonde woman with pink hues.

The woman folded her eyes and chuckled as soon as their gazes connected.

“Welcome, brother.”

The woman was none other than Edmund’s only sister.

She shares the same surname as Vessel, Vivian.

“Have you returned yet?”

“Yeah.”

Edmund responded indifferently.

His eyes were so icy as he stared at Vivian that it was difficult to believe they belonged to someone looking at his younger sister.

“I just got back from Lady Leanne’s tea party, isn’t that a coincidence?”

Vivian, on the other hand, was cordial to Edmund, but his expression couldn’t keep up with her.

Edmund didn’t like his sister Vivian very much.

It was due to what she had done in the past.

While Edmund and his comrades looked up to Caleb as an idol, the young ladies saw him as their groom and wanted to be in his presence.

Vivian was no exception to this.

Because she also wanted to see Caleb, she requested her mother, the Marchioness and Empress’s maid-in-law, for permission to visit the Imperial Palace once a month to ride horses with other young ladies.

Then, four months ago, she fell off the horse, which frightened their parents.

She may still be riding if her father, Marquis Vessel, had not become enraged and prohibited her from horseback riding when the doctor indicated she would have died if the horse had been a little more agitated.

Edmund could comprehend it that well.

Caleb is an outstanding guy in his views, and he comprehended the sentiments of his sister and other young girls.

However, when Vivian was forbidden from riding, she entered the Royal Knights by mentioning Edmund’s name.

At the moment, the door guards believed Vivian’s statements that he had come at Edmund’s request, and Vivian sought the Knight’s quarter for Caleb.

‘Fortunately, before Vivian discovered Caleb, I found her and sent her out.’

It sent shivers up his spine every time he remembered what had happened back then.

Edmund told his father and mother this story seriously, but neither of them took it seriously.

How much did she want Caleb to sell her brother’s name?

Of course, Edmund found it completely intolerable.

First and foremost, because of what she did when he attempted to send Vivian out.

It was still vivid.

The word she yelled out in a groovy tone.

‘I must see the Duke! He’ll be interested in me as soon as I get around him!’
